Question 1

Use the ideal gas equation of state to estimate the molar volume in m3/mol and the density of air
in kg/m3 at 40 ºC and a gauge pressure of 3.0 atm.

Question 2

The pressure gauge on a 20.0 m3 tank of nitrogen at 25 0C reads 10 bars. Estimate the mass of
nitrogen in the tank by:
(a) Using the ideal gas equation of state to estimate the system volume
(b) Conversion from standard conditions
(c) Is it suitable to assume ideal gas for this problem? Please justify.

Question 3

The measured volumetric flow rate of ethane at 10.0 atm absolute and 35 ºC is 1.00 x 103 L/h.
Using an estimated value of the second virial coefficient (B) in the truncated virial equation:
(a) Calculate the specific volume (L/mol)
(b) Estimate the compressibility factor, z
(c) Determine the mass flow rate of ethane in kg/h.

Question 4

A 5.0 m3 tank is charged with 75.0 kg of propane gas at 25 ºC. Use the SRK equation of state to:
(a) Estimate the pressure in the tank
(b) Then calculate the percentage error that would result from the use of the ideal gas
equation of state for the calculation.

Question 5

A certain gas has a molecular weight of 30.0 g/mol, a critical temperature of 310 K and a critical
pressure of 4.5 MPa. Calculate the density in kg/m3 of this gas at 465 K and 9.0 MPa:
(a) If the gas is ideal
(b) If the gas obeys the law of corresponding states.

Question 6

A stream of oxygen enters a compressor at 298 K and 1.00 atm at a rate of 127 m3/h and is
compressed to 358 K and 1000 atm. Estimate the volumetric flow rate of compressed O2, using
the compressibility-factor equation of state.

Question 7

A 30 liter cylinder is evacuated and filled with 5.00 kg of a gas containing 10.0 mole % N2O and
the balance N2. The gas temperature is 24 ºC. Use the compressibility chart to solve the following
problems.
(a) What is the gauge pressure (atm) of the cylinder gas after the tank is filled?
(b) A fire breaks out in the plant where the cylinder is kept, and the cylinder valve ruptures
when the gas gauge pressure reaches 273 atm. What was the gas temperature (ºC) at
the moment before the rupture occurred?

Question 8

An insulated 10 m3 tank containing non-ideal gas mixtures of 20 % ethanol, 65 % carbon dioxide

and 15 % helium by volume is stored at 400 K and 1100 psig.
(a) Estimate the mass of gas mixtures in the tank in kg using Kay's rule.
(b) Analyse whether the tank is safe to be transported at 400 K if there is 350 kg of the gas
mixtures and the pressure safety factor for transportation is 3. (Note: Prove that the gas
mixture pressure does not exceed (Pstorage/3)

Question 9

A fuel is burned with air. The flow rate of air was measured using flow meter. The flow meter
indicated that the flow rate of air is 10000 SCFH (standard cubic feet per hour)
(a) Calculate the mass flow rate of air in kg/h
(b) If the temperature of air at 30 0C and pressure 1.5 atm (absolute). What is the actual
volumetric flow rate of air in m3/h?
(c) What is the density of air (kg/m3) if the temperature of air at 30 0C and pressure 1.5 atm
(absolute)

Question 10

You are working in a small lab with a dimension 15 ft x 15 ft x 10 ft and about 10 L of acetone
is spilt on the floor and evaporated. Assuming the door is closed and no air can flow in or out
from the lab. The lab temperature is at 30 0C and outside pressure is at 1 atm.
(a) Calculate the number of moles of air and acetone in the room.
(b) If 5000 ppm of acetone is inhaled, it can be severely hazardous to human. Is it safe for
you to work in the lab? Prove it by calculation.
