BASKETBALL

1. Order or Sequence

The history of basketball began with its invention in 1891 in Springfield,

Massachusetts by Canadian physical education instructor James
Naismith as a less injury-prone sport than football. The game became
established fairly quickly and grew very popular as the 20th century
progressed, first in America and then throughout the world. After
basketball became established in American colleges, the professional
game followed. The establishment of the American National Basketball
Association (NBA) then followed in 1946 which grew to a multibillion-dollar
enterprise by the end of the century, and basketball became an integral
part of American culture. To date, there are 212-member countries
worldwide, whilst in the UK alone there are over 500,000 people who
regularly participate in recreational basketball and it has become
increasingly common to find the sport as part of the curriculum in schools
at all levels.

2. Description

Basketball is a handball game usually played by two teams of five players

on the court. A basketball is a spherical object that rolls and bounces. The
objective is to get the ball through a hoop mounted high on a backboard
at back end. It is a very popular sport worldwide, played with a round and
usually orange ball that bounces. Basketball players mainly use skills
such as dribbling, shooting, running, and jumping.

3. Cause and Effect

Basketball is everywhere in the Philippines. A big thanks to mass media

because through it, basketball was put into greater heights. The PBA was
inaugurated and Filipinos had the opportunity to watch NBA games on
TV. This is one of the reasons why Filipinos have great love for basketball.
They try to emulate their idols that they see play and perform on their
television. Filipinos even buy jerseys and sneakers to imitate basketball
players and apply their idols’ moves in real life on the court.

4. Comparison and Contrast

Basketball and volleyball are the sports wherein the players show a lot of
defense styles and strategies. In volleyball, there is a skill called blocking
in which you stop your opponent from making a point. However, there is
also blocking in basketball which also results to stopping an opponent
from making a point, in just a different way. However, these two sports
are played differently despite their similarities. A game of basketball
consists of fiver players each team while there’s six players each team in
volleyball. Unlike in volleyball, basketball doesn’t have a net that
separates the players from their opponents. Basketball is a more physical
game for it does more contact to a player’s opponent unlike in volleyball.

5. Problem and Solution

Basketball requires extensive stop and go and cutting drills which can put
the ligaments and menisci of the knee at risk. Injury to the medial collateral
ligament is most common following a blow to the outside of the knee and
can be often be treated with ice, bracing and a gradual return to activity.
To avoid knee injuries, players are advised to take their warm ups
seriously. By doing a good warm up, you also prepare your muscles for a
harder exercise. Wrong landing of feet is one of the often causes of knee
injury. A player should be careful in landing after they jump for there is a
possible dislocation of bones in a person’s knee if he landed
inappropriately.
