B. A compound is formed between the atoms X and Y. if the atomic number of X is 19 and Y is 8,
then answer the following:
i. State the valencies of X and Y
ii. What are the ions formed by X and Y, if any?
iii. In the reaction between X and Y, explain which one gets oxidized.
iv. Give oxidation and reduction reaction, showing electrons.

C. State your observation when


i. Copper oxide is heated with ammonia gas
ii. Ammonia is burned in excess oxygen
iii. Ammonia gas reacts with excess chlorine
iv. concentrated sulfuric acid is spilt on a wooden table.
v. Copper sulphide is treated with hydrochloric acid.

D. A group of elements in the periodic table are given below

E. The equation for the burning of butane is

2C4 H10 + 13O2 → 8CO2 + 10H2 O

i. How many moles of CO2 are produced when one mole of butane burns?
ii. What volume at STP, is occupied by the number of moles determined in E(i)?
iii. What is the number of atoms of CO2 produced by burning two moles of butane?
iv. What is the empirical formula and vapor density of butane?

F. Write balanced equations for the following reactions


i. Addition of excess ammonia solution to silver chloride.
ii. Potassium permanganate with concentrated hydrochloric acid
iii. Sal ammoniac is heated with slaked lime.
iv. Sulphur is added to concentrated nitric acid.

G. Solutions A, B, C, D and E have pH values 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Which of the solution would


i. Liberate hydrogen with Zn metal
ii. Produce ammonia when heated with NH4Cl
iii. Neutralize a base and contains molecules and ions
iv. Remains neutral to litmus

H. Give reasons for the following


i. Ionic compounds conduct electricity in their fused state, but not in their solid state.
ii. Why does oxygen molecule possess a double covalent bond while nitrogen molecule

iii. Why is ammonia highly soluble in water despite being a covalent compound?
iv. Why does methane gas have a very low melting point of -182oC?

i. Calculate molecular mass of a gas, 5.6 L of which at STP weighs 8 kg. If the elemental gas
has atomic mass 16, what is its atomicity?
ii. Calculate percentage by weight of nitrogen in K4Fe(CN)6
{Ar: K = 39, C = 12, N = 14, Fe = 56 }
iii. Ammonia is burned in excess oxygen in the presence of a catalyst. Write the balanced
chemical equation and determine the volume of oxygen required to produce 800 cm3 of
nitric oxide. Also calculate the number of molecules of ammonia used up in the same
reaction.

b) Give reasons for the following


i. Pure nitric acid takes on a yellowish brown colour when exposed to light
ii. The apparatus used in the preparation of nitric acid using sulfuric acid is unique from that
used in the preparation of hydrochloric acid.
iii. Why is platinum not preferred as a catalyst in the Contact process?
iv. Addition of barium chloride helps to distinguish between dilute hydrochloric acid and
sulfuric acid.
v. Fused calcium chloride is not used as a drying agent for ammonia.
