What do you think happens when you have a green tile (positive) grouped
with a red tile (negative)? Can we simplify this expression?

Let's try some examples with a partner.

Pick a partner and pick an equation to solve for x:

10x-3=4x+21 -5x+10=-3x-4

2x+14=4x-2 -5x+4=-3x-20

3x-4=x-2 x+32=2x-1+2x

25x-3=x+1 2x+1=6x-11

5x-7=2x+23 5x-4=2x+2

x+9+x=x+18 5x+20=15x-30

Let's try a few examples, drag the answer to the correct equation:

x - 15 1
=x+
6x + 3 = 3(2x+ ) 2
7 4x + 14 = 2(x + ) + 2x

x = 2x+
+
x+3 3
-15
8x + 10 = 3x + 5(x + )

Sort the equations into their appropriate baskets:

2x+1=2x- -1

5x+1=5x+1

2x+1=3x-4 ∞
ONE SOLUTION 7x+3=x+1 SOLUTIONS

x+4+x=2(x+2)

4x-14=2(2x+-7)

4x+3=x+5

3x-3=2x+3+x
