THE TEACHER AS AN EFFECTIVE MANAGER

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LEARN?

1. Discuss the different kinds, causes and effects of stress,
2. Determine one's goals and values after reflecting on the principles of stress
management,
3. Explain how time management matrix can help a person manage stress more
effectively.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?

1. Kinds, causes and effects of stress

KINDS OF STRESS

 Acute Stress is a psychological condition arising in response to a terrifying or

traumatic event, or witnessing a traumatic event that induces a strong emotional
response within the individual. It should not be confused with the unrelated
circulatory condition of shock/ hypo perfusion. ( Reynaud,2015)

 Episodic Stress occurs when someone takes on too many tasks, becomes
overwhelmed by all the demands with an inability to meet those demands. They
seem to have many different disastrous situations, live in chaos and
disorganization. Things like being late for meetings, work, or appointments
happen because the car broke down or they forgot to get gas. They misplace
things because they are preoccupied with trying to fix an episodic event that
occurred prior to the next one. It seems like they live under Murphy’s Law;
“What can go wrong, will go wrong.” (Miller et al., 2007).

 Chronic Stress is the response to emotional pressure suffered for a prolonged

period of time in which an individual perceives he or she has little or no control.
It involves an endocrine system response in which corticosteroids are released.
While the immediate effects of stress hormones are beneficial in a particular
short-term situation, long-term exposure to stress creates a high level of these
hormones. This may lead to high blood pressure (and subsequently heart
disease), damage to muscle tissue, inhibition of growth, suppression of the
immune system,[1] and damage to mental health. (Neil, 2013)

CAUSES OF STRESS

1. Personal problems that can cause stress

2. Your health
3. Emotional stress
4. Stress in the family
5. Conflicts with your beliefs and values
6. Social and job issues that can cause stress
7. Your surroundings
8. Your social situation
9. Your job
10. Unemployment

EFFECTS OF STRESS

Common effects of stress on your body

 Headache
 Muscle tension or pain
 Chest pain
 Fatigue
 Change in sex drive
 Stomach upset
 Sleep problems
Common effects of stress on your mood

 Anxiety
 Restlessness
 Lack of motivation or focus
 Feeling overwhelmed
 Irritability or anger
 Sadness or depression
Common effects of stress on your behavior

 Overeating or undereating
 Angry outbursts
 Drug or alcohol abuse
 Tobacco use
 Social withdrawal
 Exercising less often
(MFMER, 2017)

2. Principles of stress management.

We need to understand the thoughts and beliefs translate into emotions and
feelings, put things into a healthier perspective, be aware of your expectations, and set
healthy boundaries. (Senko, 2011)

3. What is time management?

“Time management” is the process of organizing and planning how to divide

your time between specific activities. Good time management enables you to work
smarter – not harder – so that you get more done in less time, even when time is tight
and pressures are high. Failing to manage your time damages your effectiveness and
causes stress. (Cottrell, 2013)

WHAT I NEED TO REMEMBER?

Stress is inevitable but Management of stress

manageable. begins in making the right
decisions.

management.
WHAT DOES RESEARCH SAYS ABOUT THIS TOPIC?

According to Palm M. Lehrel (2007), Nervous tension that results from internal
conflicts from a wide range of internal situations.
According to Ajay Shukla (2006), stress as a condition or feeling experienced
when a person perceives that “demands exceed the pernal and social resources the
individual is able to mobilize.

WHAT INSIGHT AND LEARNING HAVE YOU GAINED IN THE TOPIC?

Many students feel that they continue to do a lot and yet end up accomplishing
nothing especially in studying the lesson. This can due to the fact that what they are
doing is not really what is important like surfing in the internet while studying but what
seemed to be important at the moment. These urgent matters and not urgent matters
are important especially handling stress problems.
Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or
upset your balance in some way. As for me stress is not always seem bad instead it
motivates me to look forward and to study harder for better future. Just be optimistic all
the time.
Therefore, I can say that stress can be cause by good things happen you as
well. Each person has capacity to encounter stress but it depends how they handle
their selves.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

Learn how to manage and handle the schedule to avoid conflict. Make an
organized schedule to do a better and meaningful result especially if you are still a
student.

THE CLASSROOM AS A GLOBAL COMMUNITY

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LEARN?

1. Identify internationally competent individual;
2. Describe a global classroom;
3. Explain what is globally connected classroom

WHAT DO I NEED TO LEARN?

1. Identify internationally competent individual

Globally competent individuals are life-long learners, have an appreciation for cultural
differences, an ability to understand and consider multiple perspectives, critical and
comparative thinking skills, problem solving abilities, comfort with ambiguity and change, and
understand globally significant issues.

2. Describe a global classroom

Global Classrooms is an innovative educational program that engages public middle

school and high school students in an exploration of current world issues through interactive
simulations and curricular materials. Students explore important topics such as peacekeep
ing, sustainable development, human rights, and economics of globalization. Global
Classrooms cultivates global literacy, life skills and attitudes necessary for active citizenship
by engaging students in the exploration of international issues and institutions, supporting
educators with professional development and innovative learning resources and enriching
communities by nurturing respect among young people for diverse perspectives.

3. Explain what is a globally connected classroom

A globally connected classroom internationalizes the curriculum, promotes cultural

awareness, develop intercultural competencies, recognizes the importance of language
learning, promotes co-curricular and extra- curricular opportunities, encourages overseas
exchange and highlight overseas internships. Intercultural education embraces diversity
through curriculum content, process and outcomes. Cultural awareness is the first step
towards intercultural competency.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

1. Characteristics of a global classroom

 Has appreciation for people from other cultures.

This means that we need to respect others culture and appreciate each difference. We must
know other culture to become more competitive.

 Is sensitive to the needs of people different from themselves.

This means that we should always think that we have different culture, and we must learn how
to cooperate, and respect each culture that we may in counter.

 Has increasing knowledge about people around the world

This means that as a teacher we should have enough knowledge about the culture of
the other country around the word, because time will come that we can teach people
from other country. And if we now the people and their culture it will be easy for us to
mingle with them.

 Has critical cognitive skills and attitudes such as empathy, interconnectedness,

perspective taking, cross-cultural understanding, action orientation, and
prejudice reduction

2. Requirements of teaching a globally oriented curriculum

 Effectively use knowledge gained from various information sources and utilise
technology
 Co-operate with other parties – students, colleagues and other partners
 Function at local, regional, national, European and global levels. The competence
areas set for teacher education, which are the basis for our curriculum, support this
European framework.

3. Internalizing the disciplines that answers what should students study in the
global curriculum
 Reading and language arts can include word literature
 Science education might include thee study of natural environment and
problems created by technology and economic innovation.
 Mathematics education can include the study of metric system and traditional
numeration system from other cultures and math concepts can be taught using
word data and global issues.
 Foreign language education can include languages of immigrant and refugee
population and the role of translators in diplomacy.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO REMEMBER?

Characteristics of a Globally What does this Characteristics mean to

Competent Citizens me?

1. Comprehends international The student therefore actively seeks out faculty

dimensions of his/her major field of members and curriculum offerings that fulfill
study this need, regardless of discipline.

The overseas experience that not only uproots

the student but also immerses him/her within
the host country’s culture is critical to the
development of global competence. While
2. Exhibits cross-cultural sensitivity immersed in another culture, the student has
and adaptability perhaps the greatest opportunity to assess
his/her own assumptions about the world and
his/her own culture. Upon return, the student
can no longer view the world only through one
lens and builds his/her conceptual framework.

The globally competent student builds upon

this established framework throughout life. As
the result of an education from a globally
3.Carries global competencies competent university, the student adds the
throughout life competencies personally gained to benefit of
the greater public good. The student becomes
a globally competent citizen that is equipped to
contribute on both a local and global scale.

WHAT DO I NEED TO REMEMBER?

I need to remember that the instructional methods and material in global competencies
emphasize intercultural interaction and culturally appropriate methods of instruction and
assessment.

WHAT DOES RESEARCH SAY ABOUT THIS TOPIC?

Students need to be capable of working across national, geographical, and cultural

boundaries, recognizing the cultural, historical, epistemological and ethical context of
perceiving sustainability problems and developing solution options; and drawing on a pool of
internationally-sourced solution ideas that can, when adapted, be transferred to different local
contexts (Ferrer-Balas et al., 2008)

WHAT INSIGHT AND LEARNING HAVE YOU GAINED IN THE TOPIC?

A global classroom is innovative educational program that engages middle school and
high school students in an exploration of current world issues through interactive simulation
and curriculum materials. Global classrooms cultivate literacy, life skills and attitudes
necessary for active citizenship.
It is said to be that teachers should possessed a wide knowledge and updated about the
surroundings. In 21th century, students should learn about people and ideas from all over the
world. Leading students to learn to reflect about things and ideas as an entire and total
system and familiarizing learners with global matters that undoubtedly will have bearing on
their lives.
Teaching in global classroom helps the students to learn acquainting students
with global issues that are certain to have an impact on their lives. Globalization should help
students participate with other students from all over the planet in thinking through hard
questions involving not only intercultural competence but also the ability to span all kinds of
social as well as geographical boundaries
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
As soon to be a teacher, I need to put in mind that different learners so different and
diverse personality need to encountered. All I need to do is to observed and learn the
behavior of my students and create meaningful relationship towards them.
