INTRODUCTION

José Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines, was born José
Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda on June 19, 1861, in Calamba,
a small town in the Laguna Province. As a young boy, he showed special
academic promise and moved to Manila for additional schooling,
eventually completing his secondary schooling at Ateneo de Municipal
Manila. He continued his studies at the university level, pursuing a
career in law at Santo Tomas University in Manila. However, Rizal’s
talent and skills brought him to study in Spain, France, and
eventually Germany, where he earned acclaim in the medical field with
a specialization in ophthalmology (Palma, 1949; Rizal, Blumentritt, &
Alzona, 1962).

However, although Rizal was obviously gifted with a scientific mind,

he was also endowed with an artist’s soul. He exelled in different
fields of artistry like making novels where he made his greatest
impact. While completing his studies in Europe, he wrote two great
novels, Noli Me Tangere (1886/2006) and El Filibusterismo (1891/2009),
that inspired reformists and revolutionaries in the Philippines to
speak out and then rise up against the Spanish.

Rizal stands alone as the greatest and most revered symbol of the
potential and achievement of Filipinos. The lessons of leadership we
can learn from his erudite and courageous life stand the test of time.
Rizal’s main contributions as a leader were through his insightful and
inspirational writing, and to a lesser extent, his role as a reformist
and a symbol of hope.
