 Community summer picnic a big success!
On Friday, June 21, at the Kaslo community summer picnic, approximately
250 people enjoyed a free outdoor meal and live musical entertainment. The
scene was picture-perfect at Vimy Park, where on a sun-drenched evening
families, individuals and elders came together and enjoyed each other’s com-
pany with a good meal and good conversation.
Children ran around the playground, people lounged in chairs and on blan-
kets, the Moon Family Band played an epic three hour set of music and there
was food enough for all. Spit-roasted pork, veggie burgers, salads and dessert
were all part of this community event.
Organizing the event was the Kaslo Community Cares Network, a coalition
of North Kootenay Lake Community Services, Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Kaslo
Senior Citizens Association, St. Mark’s Anglican Church, St. Andrew’s United
Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Many community members and
businesses contributed and volunteered to make this event possible. The picnic
fundraised over $1000 which was enough to cover the costs and leave a little extra
which was donated to the Kaslo Food Hub. – Patrick Steiner

Nuclear medicine getting an upgrade
Work has begun to replace old nuclear medicine technol-
ogy at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) with
a new SPECT CT camera, which will provide better images
and enhance patient care. Redeveloping the nuclear medicine
department is also part of this $1.63 million project, funded
by the Province of BC/Interior Health (IH) and the West
Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital District.
Construction will temporarily suspend nuclear medicine
testing at the hospital for about 15 weeks, with expected com-
pletion at the end of September. Other medical imaging ser-
vices (X-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI) will not be impacted.
Information for patients: During construction and instal-
lation of the new machine, patients requiring nuclear medi-
cine exams will be directed to Penticton Regional Hospital or
alternate facilities based on their care needs.
Patients should discuss their specific imaging needs with
their family physician or specialist. Imaging like CT or ultra-
sound may be an alternative in some cases.

Enhancing Surgical Services at
Kootenay Lake Hospital
Kootenay Lake Hospital is home to a thriving operating
room, which is used over 2,000 hours per year for ortho-
pedic surgeries, cataract surgery, obstetrical and gyne-
cologic surgeries and general surgeries such as hernia
repairs and colonoscopies.
Interior Health recognizes the excellent surgical ser-
vices at Kootenay Lake Hospital and has increased fund-
ing to enable a nearly 50% increase in colonoscopies
performed at KLH this year. With increased procedures
comes the need for new, state of the art equipment. Our
goal this spring is to purchase a new colonoscope for our
hospital. The technological upgrades in the new colono-
scope provide enhanced imaging and maneuverability,
which are important factors in determining abnormali-
ties in the colon.
