Hindus Slay Women to Save

Them From Moslem Mobs

NEW DELHI, Sept 17, 1947 (NYT)

— Hindus and Sikhs in a west Punjab village slew 70 of

their women folk with swords and knives to prevent their
falling into the hands of a Moslem mob which had been
besieging the village for 28 hours, a survivor related
Wednesday in an interview published in a Delhi
newspaper.

The 30-year-old leader of Sikh evacuees from the village

of Bhaller in the Sheikhupura district of west Punjab
(Pakistan) said he killed his wife with his kirpan - a dagger
which is a Sikh religious symbol - when it became
apparent that the Moslem attackers were about to
overrun the village. Other men followed suit, slaying their
wives and female kin.

“There were a few brave girls and women who did not
wait for their men to do this painful duty but committed suicide by throwing themselves into
wells of jumping from housetops.” the survivor said.

[Note: This was in 1947, when similar aggression was being waged against the
indigenous Buddhists, ethnic tribal minorities, and Hindus, across the border in
Arakan / Rakhine State.]
