Title:

The effect of Eucalyptus leaves mixed with Lemongrass as substitute Mosquito Repellant Oil.

Background of the Study

People nowadays are fun of doing outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, hanging out with family,
friends and collegues. As observed, this current lifestyle of millenials are define as wild, carefree,
curious, aggressive and adventurous. Most of the millenials today are fun of discovering and visiting
places as seen in their social media account. With a current liifestyle like this, exposing theirselves
outside, is prone to mosquito bites due to a combination of scent, light, heat, and humidity considering
ppalso that outdoor places are prone to have a high risk for mosquito-borne diseases.

Aside from the current lifestyle of millenials, there are many farmers who prefered to live in highland
and remote areas together with thier family and chose to cultivate land as a source of thier living. Since
the goverment has limited services offer to the public, we cannot deny that their access to health care
services provided is limited also. Some might never enjoy any of these governement health care services.
We also know that those who live near lakes, forest, river, and swamps are prone to mosquito bites
because of mosquitoes are attracted to odor, temperature and hygene of the place.

One of the well-known desease cause by mosquitoes is Malaria. In fact, an oficial of the Department of
Health (DOH) bared that malaria, a mosquito-borne disease, continues to pose a risk in five provinces in
the country. During a recent media forum held at the Manila Hotel, DOH – National Malaria Control and
Elimination Program Manager Dr. Raffy Deray said that malaria was still prevalent in some barangays in
the provinces of Palawan, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, Sulu, and Mindoro Occidental.

The government has been exerting effort to free all the region down to baranggays from Malaria. But as
concern individual, we can aid the effort of the goverement to eradicate this kind of desease brought by
mosquito and simultaneously promoting eco-friendly products by intorducing the Eucalyptus leaves
mixed with Lemongrass as substitute mosquito repellant oil.

Whichever species you encounter, you can protect yourself without relying on chemical based products
that have the potential to cause health and environmental problems. You might choose to avoid using
these products in more economical way by utioizing the full potential of natural resources that can be
easily cultivated in ones' backyard. This will actually help household, especialy to those reside in highland
areas that have limited access to the market, to combat malaria in a very economical way. This will also
prevent them from suffering skin deseases out of the product in the market that undergone chemical
process which might resulted to allergies considering that they dont usually seek medical advice due to
financial crisis and limited access to health care services provided by the government.

Hence, the creation of this research proposal.

Statement of the problem

This study seek to answer the following question;

1. What is/are the effect of Eucalyptus leaves mixed with Lemongrass as substitute mosquito repellant
oil compare to commercial mosquito repellant product?

2. What is/are the effect of Eucalyptus leaves mixed with Lemongrass as substitute mosquito repellant
oil on mortality rate of the mosquitoes with the following different amount of concentration;

2.1 Two (2) drops

2.2 Four (4) drops

2.3 Six (6) drops

3. What is/are the perception of the repondents on Eucalyptus leaves mixed with Lemongrass as
substitute mosquito repellant oil in terms of;

3.1 Odor

3.2 Tactile Sensation

Significance of the study

This study aims to prove the effect/s of Eucalyptus leaves mixed with Lemongrass as substitute mosquito
repellant oil. This product will highly benefit those individual with limited access to health care services
provided by the government more specifically on combating Malaria desease brought by mosquito bite.
Also, this study helps to pomote eco-friendly product which is very timely and needed considering the
drastic emerging of chemical based products introduced to the market for consumption whose health
benefits are still in question.

Aside from the health benefits of this study, it will also provide reference to the future reserchers with
the same concept and idea.

Scope and limitation

This research proposal is limited only to the effect of Eucalyptus leaves mixed with Lemongrass as
substitute mosquito repellant oil on mortality rate of the mosquitoes with different amount of
concentration as applied to three (3) repondents per concentartion and another three (3) for commercial
product, a total of twelve (12) repondents. Each concentration will be compared in terms of odor and
tactile sensation as percieved by respective respondents.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design used, research locale, materials used, research procedures,
financial analysis and testing process.
Research Design

The study used the Descriptive Method as research design. It involved observation of the effect of the
end product as applied to respective respondents. Also, it employed experiment in making the Eucalytys
mixed with Lemongrass as mosquito repellant oil.

Research Locale

The study was conducted in Brgy. Makir, Datu Odin Sinsuat Maguindanao. The location was more
strategic and convenient to both the respondents and the researchers.

Resecrh Respondents

Each concentration was applied to three (3) corresponding respondents. Thus, a total of twelve (12)
respondents were subject for application of the different concentration including the commercial
product. The three (3) respondents were categorized by age, one (1) representative from age between
10 to 15 years old, one (1) representative from age between 16 to 20 years old, and one (1)
representative from 21 to 25 years old, a total of three (3) respondents per treatment.

Materials Used

The materials listed below are/were needed to successfully conduct this research., to wit;

1. Three (3) kl. Of Eucalyptus leaves

2. Three (3) kl. Of Lemongrass

3. Potable Water

4. Pressure Cooker

5. Distillation

6. Water Container

7. Tape

8. Weighing scale

9. Gloves
10. Mask

11. Beaker

12. Cork Bottle

13. Bowl.

14. Ice

Research Procedure

A. Making of Eucalyptus mixed with Lemongrass as mosquito repellant oil.

The following procedure were dult observed in condicting this study, to wit;

1. Prepare all the necessary materials needed as mention in the materials listed in this chapter.

2. Wash thoroughly the Eucalyptus leaves and Lemongrass.

3. Put 3 liters of potable water to the pressure cooker.

4. Set up the pressure cooker and customized distillation tool in preparation for extraction of the oil from
the Eucalyptus leaves and Lemongrass.

5. Steam separately the the Eucalyptus leaves and Lemongrass for One and half (1 1/2) hrs.

6. Put the extracted oil from the beaker to the cork tube and seal properly.

7. The Eucalyptus with Lemongrass as mosquito repellant oil is now ready for use.

B. Treatment Procedures

The following procedures are uniform to each concentration ( 2 drops, 4 drops, 6 drops ) and one (1)
commercial product.

1. This study must be conducted early morning when mosquitoes were active.

2. The respondents must wear short sleeve and short to attract the mosquitoes.

3. A drop of each concentration must be applied by respective respondents in their expose ams and legs
intended to attact the mosquitoes.

4. Upon application of the treatment, each respondents will be ask a few questions related to the study.
A questionnaire must be prepared.
5. The researchers will count every mosquito that will land to respondents expose skin and document
every observation.

6. The counting must be done every minute right after the application of the different concentration and
commercial product.

7. The observation must be within the span of 3 munites. Thus, a total of three (3) counting must be
done and duly documented by the researchers.
