Attempt Questions 11-17

Answer the questions in the spaces provided. Show all relevant working in questions
involving calculations.

Question 11 (4 marks)

Use the following equation to answer the questions below:

Fe(s) + H2SO4(aq)  FeSO4(aq) + H2(g)

(a) What mass of sulfuric acid is needed to completely dissolve an iron nail of 3
mass 10.0 g?

Question 12 (4 marks)

Copper can be obtained from a substance known as chalcopyrite. Chalcopyrite is

known as ‘mixed sulfide’; it contains iron, copper and sulfur.

A 50.0 g sample of chalcopyrite contains 17.4 g of copper, and 15.2 g of iron.

The remainder is sulfur.

Calculate the empirical formula of chalcopyrite. 4

Question 13 (5 marks)

Use the following information about pressure to answer parts (a) to (c) below.

 Air pressure is a measure of the total forces exerted by gas particles.

 The unit for air pressure is kPa.
 Vapour pressure is the pressure caused by the vapour particles above a liquid in a sealed
container, such as the one shown below. It is also measured in kPa.

The pressure due to

these gas particles is
called vapour
pressure.

(a) As a liquid is heated, its vapour pressure increases. Explain this effect using the 1
kinetic/particle theory.

..................................................................................................................................

..................................................................................................................................

(b) The data below shows how the vapour pressure for a liquid called pentane 3
changes as it is heated.

Temperature (oC) Vapour Pressure (kPa)

0 26
10 38
20 54
30 80
40 113

Graph the data shown in the table.

6
(c) The boiling point of a pure substance occurs when the temperature the substance 1
is heated to produces a vapour pressure that is equal to the atmospheric pressure.

Knowing that normal atmospheric pressure at sea level and 25oC is 100 kPa, use
the graph and information in this question to estimate the boiling point of pentane
under these conditions.

(a) Sketch and name the appropriate piece of glassware used to accurately 1
produce the 0.15 M solution of XF3.

7
(b) Calculate the atomic weight of element “X” and hence suggest a likely 3
identity for the element.
