INTRODUCTION

In this modern era, technology is the best way to give and gain information to one

another. Technology is not only used for entertainment, it is also used by most

companies to promote their product/s, and sell in the market. Advertisement is one of

the most effective marketing strategy a businessman can do. With advertisements

people can get to know the product/s with just a seconds long video presentation or

with a image representation. Technology is also the new and easier way to be updated

about current happenings not only in the country but all over the globe. Before, news

can only be read on newspapers and hear through from neighborhood, but with the help

of technology such as computer, cellular phone and television people can easily get

news updates.

According to Advertising Association of the UK, advertising is a means of

communication with the users of a product or service. Advertisements are messages

paid for by those who send them and are intended to inform or influence people who

receive them. In today's world, advertisement uses every possible media to get its

message through. It does this via television, print (newspapers, magazines, journals

etc), radio, press, internet, direct selling, hoardings, mailers, contests, sponsorships,

posters, clothes, events, colors, sounds, visuals and even people. A advertisement is

always present, though people may not be aware of it.

Just like advertisements, news can be a medium of promotion. News is the spinal

cord of journalism. The basic assumption of journalism is the collection, presentation

and interpretation of news which is meant to inform the people about generalad current
information. News is the factual report of an event. What the reporter sees is supposed

to be reported, objectively means to report the facts exactly the same way as they

occurred. (Bhowmik A., 2011)

Both advertisement and news have their own importance’s in different industries.

A business organization can introduce itself and its products to the public through

advertising. An advertisement has big influence in the increase or decrease of sales of

new and existing products. It helps in meeting the forces of competition in the market

place. If a product is not advertised continuously, the competitors may snatch its market

through increased advertisements.

While, news is important for a number of reasons within a society, mainly to

inform the public about events that are around them and may affect them. Often, news

is for entertainment purposes too; to provide a distraction of information about other

places people are unable to get to or have little influence over. News can make people

more connected to the events that is happening around them. News also plays a very

vital role in the student's life, it acts as a base of education, it helps them to increase

their vocabulary, knowledge on different matters, keeps them up to date.

Since advertisements are created to attract people in buying their product/s,

sometimes companies tend to exaggerate in representing the items they are selling.

They use fallacy to authority which uses a public figures to bandwagon. Using

celebrities that many people idolize, it automatically increases the products credibility

especially to fans so they will easily believe and buy the item. Same way goes to news

article, what we hear from other people is not always true and reliable. Not because
your idols told you certain things, you'll believe them. It is important to check and verify

first the news from a trusted and reliable source (website).

In 2015, Sprite released a commercial featuring Grammy Award winning Rapper

Drake. Sprite is a lemon and lime flavored soft drink created by The Coca-Cola

Company. Sprite teamed up with Drake for the first commercial of its recently launched

"Spark Campaign, aimed at giving teens a platform to express their creativity through

music and film.

Drake's commercial, titled "Unleashed," features the MC struggling to find

inspiration in the studio while recording his hit song "Forever;" the song was originally

featured in the LeBron James documentary, "More Than A Game," and reached No. 2

on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Drake drinks a Sprite and morphs into an

animatronics model with the Sprite traveling through his body and exploding through his

heart, which is in the shape of a large speaker. The model reassembles, helping

unleash Drake's lyrical prowess with the delivery of the song's intro line: "Last name

Ever/First name greatest." Joe Tripodi, Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer of the

Coca-Cola Company.

The Coca Cola beverage invented by pharmacist John Stith Pemberton in 1886.

The formula and brand was bought in 1889 by Asa Candler who incorporated the Coca

Cola company in 1892. Similar to the connections Coca-Cola and Fanta have to red and

orange, respectively, Sprite has “owned” green since its debut. It was first developed in

West Germany in 1959 as Fanta Klare Zitrone (“Clear Lemon Fanta”) and was

introduced in the United States under the current brand name Sprite in 1961 as a

competitor to 7 Up. The bottle’s defining shape and signature “dimples” make it one of

the most unique and eye-catching packages in the market. Green has served as

Sprite’s primary colour in its advertising, packaging, merchandising and more.

The story of the Sprite commercial revolves with Drake not having much

confidence to rap but after drinking sprite he suddenly become confident and able to

rap. The purpose of this kind of commercial is to attract consumers to buy their product

by using a well known artist. Also the purpose of a company in creating an

advertisement is first, to make their product known in the market. And to show people

the difference between their product and the competitors.

The Sprite ad uses 2 of the 3 persuasive tools according to Aristotle, pathos, ethos

and logos. First is ethos, it is the tool used to influence the audience appealing to an

authority like a celebrity. Sprite uses Drake as the face of their advertisement, Drake is

a celebrity known for his amazing rapping skills and it brings credibility to Sprite as a

product. Next tool used is pathos, it is the appeal in the emotion of excitement and

satisfaction that is shown. Since the advertisement is presenting a moment in which

most of the people might have experienced in some point of their life. In that way, it is

reaching for the audience's emotion by telling everyone on how they might overcome

these moments.

The advertisement features real life situations of Drake. According to Drake,

recording studio is the place where this type of mind blockage happens. Because being

inside the studio gives you pressure to do well, especially when music professionals is

listening to you while recording. It is also the place where you reminisce all the

struggles, laugh, and cry you've done while writing the song. Because of these, it

created a big impact in Sprite being able to directly connect to its target audience which

are teenagers.
Fake

News

A hoax report went viral claiming that the actor and comedian was found dead

in his home, the victim of an apparent suicide. The story came from a website called

Linkbeef. Linkbeef.com is a 4 years 7 months old website. It has a global traffic

rank of #352,056 in the world. It is a domain having .com extension. This website

is estimated worth of $ 14,580.00 and have a daily income of around $ 27.00.

Furthermore the website is monetizing from Google Adsense. As no active

threats were reported recently by users, linkbeef.com is SAFE to browse.

Linkbeef claimed that police found Adam Sandler’s body inside his home. The

report mixed the real reports from the death of comedian Robin Williams, but it was

filled with errors. The report even claimed that Sandler’s wife issued a comment saying

she was “heartbroken” and asking for privacy. “This morning, I lost my husband and my

best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human

beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” the website

claimed.(http://www.projectcasting.com/news/adam-sandler-death-hoax/amp/)

Born on September 9, 1966, in New York City, Adam Sandler was always

the class clown but didn't consider becoming a comedian until his brother

encouraged him to perform at a Boston Comedy Club. He was a regular on

MTV's Remote Control and on NBC's Saturday Night Live before devoting

himself to making movies. Sandler is best known for comedy but has also

received critical praise for his dramatic work. (biography.com, 2019)

It is not the first time for a celebrity for being a subject of many jokes on

the internet because they're in the public eye, and the best way to knock them

out is a death hoax. Death hoax is when someone spread a news about a death

of a public figure using the Internet. Adam Sandler is just one of those hundred

celebrities that was involved in these kind of news. According to the article made

by linkbeef, Adam Sandler has been found dead at his home in an apparent

suicide. The report claims Adam had been battling severe depression and

authorities believe his death was suicide due to asphyxia. But thankfully it was

just a clickbait. Actually that time Adam Sandler was filming his new comedy
movie with David Spade wherein he and Spade fake their own dearh in the

movie to start a new life.

The question is, why do people create these kind of fake news? According to

research, others have discovered the celebrity death hoax as a proven and tested

scheme to drive traffic to their sites, which they’re monetizing with ads. The fake stories

follow a loose pattern: Often coming from sites with legit-sounding names like

Msmbc.co and Nbctoday.co, the stories tend to focus on young, popular celebrities with

many fans who would be shocked by their premature death, causing a burst of traffic to

the site, which is paid for with programmatically served ads.

The rise of platforms and ad tech have enabled the spread of celebrity death,

just as it has other types of fake news. Some pranksters have used Twitter to fool

people about celebrity deaths, using accounts that sound like actual news outlets. The

celebrity death hoax works because it taps into people’s emotions, which is what makes

people share articles in the first place. But before sharing any articles, people should

check first if the news came from a credible website.

CONCLUSION

People especially teenagers spend most of their time using gadgets. Posting on

their sns account, making assignments, doing a research and many more. And the

easiest way to connect with them is trough the same medium also. Since Internet gives

people every information they needed it becomes their nature to believe in everything

they read and watch in online. If they see any interesting and similar products their

favorite idol/celebrity uses, they immediately buy the same item without checking its

effectiveness. People are also easily deceived by fake news circulating on the Internet.

When a person's friend share an article for example about America bombing Korea your

initial reaction will be to also share the post thinking that everyone should be aware of

these horrible news. You shared the article not even reading it to verify if it is from a

reliable source.

In every action comes a great responsibility. It is important to think first before

you do anything because in just one wrong move, you can destroy not only your life but

also the life of everyone around you. Sharing news to someone is not a bad thing but

you have to make sure that the news you will be relaying is true. There is also nothing

wrong in promoting your product to earn a living, but you must never deceive others just

for your own benefit.
