“The Effect of Using YouTube as Media Toward The Students’ Listening

Comprehension”

B. The Background of the Research

This research is conducted based on the background of the problem that

the listening skill is considered as important skill for students at English

Language Education of University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. The results of

observation indicate that students still have difficulty in listening class. Then, the

students’ listening skill is still in low level. Furthermore, media in listening class

is recording and video which is downloaded and created by the lecturer. The aim

of this research is to determine the effect of using YouTube as media toward the

students’ listening comprehension. Therefore, the students will be accustomed to

use YouTube as a source and media for learning and practice English.

YouTube as a source of material that can help students to study

independently and for practicing English. The second semester students of

English Language Education at University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai in

academic year of 2018/2019 will be the subject of this research. Using YouTube

as a media, also analyzing the lack of teaching material will be the subject of the

study.

C. Identification of the Problem


According to the background of the research about The Effect of Using

YouTube as Media Toward The Students’ Listening Comprehenstion at

University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai Bangkinang, the identification of the

problems involve :

1. The students still have low listening comprehension

2. Media in teaching listening downloaded and created by the lecturers.

D. The Purpose of the Research

The purposes of the research are :

1. Using YouTube as a teaching media for second semester students of English

Language Education of University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai in

academic year of 2018/2019.

2. Determining the effectiveness of YouTube towards the students activities and

students’ achievement of second semester students of English Language

Education of University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai in academic year of

2018/2019.

E. Research Methodology

1. Research Design

In this research, Classroom Action Research (CAR) is the method of the

research. This kind of research has systematic procedures is conducted by

lecturers to gather information about, and to improve the ways educational setting

involved teaching and students’ learning. Classroom action research is a method

that is used to improve the quality of teaching and learning condition in a class

scientifically throughout systematic processes. The classroom Action Research


(CAR) procedure used in this research is Kemmis and McTaggart’s design. It

consists of two cycles, each of which contains four action research components:

planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. After the completion of the first cycle,

some new problems may have been found. Therefore, with the emergence of new

problems from the first cycle, it was necessary to continue to the second cycle,

which had the same concept as the first cycle.

2. The Location and the Time of the Research

This research will be conducted in English Language Education at

University of Pahlawan Tuanku tambusai. This research will be conducted on

second semester of the 2019/2020 academic year.

3. Subject of the Research

The subject of the research is the second semester students of English

Language Education at University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai that there are

25 students in the class. The research instrument of this research consisted of four

instruments. They are observation, interview, lecturer’s journal, and test.
