PSAS TO HOST 19TH ASIAN
AUSTRALASIAN ANIMAL PRODUCTION
CONGRESS IN OCTOBER 2020

The biannual Asian Australasian
Animal Production (AAAP)
Congress, expected to be
attended by international and
local delegates, is scheduled
to take place in Cebu City,
Philippines on October 19-24,
2020.
AAAP is a consortium of animal
societies, which was founded
in 1980 with eight charter
members representing the
animal production societies of
Australia, Indonesia, Japan,
Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand,
Thailand and Philippines. Later
on, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Papua
New Guinea, India, Vietnam,
Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran,
Sri Lanka and China joined as
member countries.

It was in 1982 when Philippines
through the Philippine Society
of Animal Science (PSAS) hosted
the 2nd AAAP congress with Dr.
Valentino G. Argañosa and Dr.
G. C Orinion as AAAP president
and chairman, respectively. After
more than three decades, this
is only the second time that the
Philippines through the Philippine
Society of Animal Science (PSAS)
will host the said congress
with Dr. Arnel N. Del Barrio,
Executive Director of Philippine
Carabao Center and former PSAS
president and Dr. Synan S. Baguio,
current PSAS Vice President
and OIC-Director of Livestock

ANNUAL CONVENTION

related fields converged
during the 55th PSAS
Scientific Seminar and Annual
Convention held on 16–19
October, 2018 at the Grand
Menseng Hotel, Davao City.

HOLDS 5TH REGIONAL CONVENTION

On April 11, 2019, more than
400 professionals and students
in Cagayan Valley gathered at
the Isabela State University
(ISU) Amphitheater in Echague,
Isabela to participate in the 5th
PSAS-Cagayan Valley Chapter
Regional Convention. Highlights
included a lecture series in
honor of Dr. Edwin C. Villar, live
animal display, livestock R&D
posters, product exhibit and
outreach program. The occasion
was graced by Department
of Agriculture-Regional Field
Office 02 Executive Director.
Mr. Narciso A. Edillo, who
is duly represented by Dr.
Roberto C. Busania, the OIC-
Regional Technical Director
for Operations. Likewise, Dr.
Ponciano Noel M. Soliman III,
the Immediate Past President
of the Federation of Goat and
Sheep Raisers and Associations
of the Philippines. Inc.
(FGASPAPI) served as plenary
speaker and presented the
newly approved Small Ruminant
Roadmap. To further strengthen
the topic presented by Dr.
Soliman, Dr. Villar gave his
response and insights.

The topics presented in the lecture
series are aligned with the livestock
commodities that the region is
stewarding and promoting and
on the important issues related to
production. For instance, the lecture
on buffalo upgrading program gave
insights on the overall picture of the
government’s efforts to improve
buffalo as a source of milk. At
present, the region is developing
dairy zones as primary source of
milk for the local consumers. On
the other hand, the lecture on
conservation of native animals is also
timely as production of these animals
became popular among raisers in
the local communities. The threats
of African Swine Fever were also
discussed, coupled with step-by-
step measures on how to prevent
its entry to the country and to the
region. To give more emphasis on
the prevention of disease outbreak,
biosecurity protocols were also
presented, along with the issue of
anti-microbial resistance. Lastly, as
the region battles with calamities
yearly, mitigating climate change in
relation to animal production was
also discussed. The lecturers were
Dr. Ester B. Flores (PCC), Dr. Synan
S. Baguio (DOST-PCAARRD), Dr.
Zaldy A. Olivas (DA-BAI Region 2),
Dr. Gerly T. Zulueta (DA-RADDL),
Dr.Judith Z. Tattao (DA-RADDL)
and Dr. Rafael Luis F. Morillo
(NVSU).
After the lecture series, a new set
of officers was elected during the
business meeting. Moreover, 243
new PSAS members took their
oath.
On the following day, an outreach
program was conducted at Brgy.
Libertad, Echague, Isabela in
collaboration with LGU-Echague
and ISU’s College of Agriculture,
School of Veterinary Medicine and
Cagayan Valley Small Ruminant
Research Center benefitting 32
raisers. Services such as branding,
deworming, vaccination, vitamin-
mineral supplementation, and
castration were administered
during the outreach.
The convention was sponsored
by ISU, DA-RFO 02, and various
private companies.

Dr. Enrico Garzon, Jr. delivered
a keynote speech during the
opening program on October 17,
emphasizing on the important
role of R&D breakthroughs and
technology application in animal
health towards assuring safety in
eggs and milk and meat products.
Plenary Session I followed the
opening program and featured
three lectures titled “Healthy
animals for a prosperous
Philippines” by Dr. Samuel Castro,
“Assessment of antimicrobial
resistant enterobacteriacea in pigs
for development of comprehensive
management system” by Dr.
Norikazu Isoda of Hokkaido
University, and “Global standards
on the use of antimicrobials to
mitigate antimicrobial resistance” by
Dr. Claro Mingala of the Philippine
Carabao Center (PCC) in lieu of
Dr. Pennapa Matayompong of OIE
(World Organization for Animal
Health).
Meanwhile, Plenary Session II saw
the lectures on the “Role of NMIS
in animal health management and

control for food safety” by Dr.
Ma. Elizabeth Callanta and “The
Downer Cow Complex: diseases
and disorders of transition dairy
and beef cows, clinical findings and
pathogenesis etiology, diagnosis,
treatment, prevention and control”
by Dr. Jorge Villamil of PSAU.
Plenary Session III was led by Dr.
Ming-Che Wu of Taiwan Livestock
Research Institute (TLRI) delivering
a lecture on “Calving ease and
age at first calving of dairy cows in
tropical climate”. This was followed
by Introductory Practical Courses
on “Applications of ultrasonography
in veterinary and animal sciences”
by Dr. Jezzie Acorda, a Professor
of University of the Philippines Los
Baños (UPLB) followed by “Real-
time ultrasound scanning of backfat
and eye muscle area in swine and
cattle” by Drs. Ester Flores and
Kristine Joy Prades of PCC. Both
lectures had actual demonstrations
of the use of ultrasound machines
for several purposes. There was
an open forum where participants
had a chance to interact with the
speakers.
A business meeting cum general
assembly was also held immediately
after the plenaries, which saw the
presentations of the PSAS national
president’s report and updates from
different local chapters, election
of new set of officers, revision in
the constitution and by-laws, and
updates on the 2019 Philippine
Association of Agriculturists
(PAA) Convention and 2020 Asia-
Australasia Association of Animal
Production Societies (AAAP)
Congress, which will be hosted by
the PSAS.
An industry forum on dairy
sponsored by the Philippine
Council for Agriculture, Aquatic
and Natural Resources Research
and Development (PCAARRD)
was also held simultaneously with
Plenary Session II, which saw the
presentations from experts from the
academe and the dairy industry.
The second day (October 18) was
divided into three concurrent
sessions with the oral presentations
of 39 technical papers and 19
posters in nine different categories.

Later on the same day, the Closing
Ceremonies were held, which
witnessed a special recognition
for the 2018 PSAS Lecture Series
Honoree Dr. Ronnie Domingo
and the 2018 PSAS Standing
Awardees namely Dr. Cesar Sevilla
(Distinguished Fellow), Dr. Rommel
Sulabo (Outstanding Teacher),
Dr. Eric Palacpac (Outstanding
Professional in Animal Science
Extension), and Dr. Marvin
Villanueva (Outstanding Young
Professional in Veterinary Research).
Oath-taking of new PSAS Regular
and Life Members were officiated
by Dr. Enrico P. Supangco, while
oath of office of new set of PSAS
National Officers was led by Dr.
Rosalina Lapita, former PSAS
President and current PAA
President.
Drs. Consuelo Amor Estrella
and Amado Angeles announced
the Best Paper and Poster
Presentations, which was the
highlight and the most awaited
part of the program. Certificates
and cash awards were given to
the winners. Closing remarks was
given by the Incoming President
Dr. Ester Flores.
On October 19, the participants
had a technical tour in different
areas of Davao.
The annual event was co-
sponsored by UPLB, PCAARRD,
Bureau of Agricultural Research,
PCC, UNAHCO and some private
companies.

chairman, respectively.
With the theme “Transcending
Boundaries towards Food
Security and Safety through
Science and Technology
Innovations in Animal
Production”, this joint PSAS
convention and AAAP congress
will serve as a platform for
participants to discuss and
share the current R&D and
industry advances in animal and
veterinary sciences and allied
fields.
Featured activities will include
scientific sessions (keynote,
plenary, oral and poster
presentation), exhibits, and
workshops. Another activity
set for the event is the AAAP
Next Leaders Forum that will
encourage networking among
the next leaders, to succeed
the tradition of AAAP and
continue the AAAP member-
countries’ cooperation.
The congress will be concluded
with technical visits in nearby
places in Cebu City and/or
adjoining island provinces.
