Description of the transport and mounting strip

Tool for heavy rolling bearings

Heavy rolling bearings cannot be lifted and 1
transported manually. The mounting and 5
carrying tool (BM – BEARING.MATE) was
developed in order to allow easier transport
and mounting of heavy rolling bearings.
2
Scope of delivery 1
Transport and mounting strip ⫹ ,
this user manual, two short retaining
brackets , grease and gloves

Design of the tool 4 3
The BM comprises (Figure 1):
Figure 1
■ two aluminium handles
■ two steel strips .
After mounting, the bearing and BM form a
unit (Figure 2). The two opposing handles
allow secure lifting and transport of the
bearing. If two suitable carrying slings of
equal length (L) are used, the bearing and
BM can be transported by a crane (Figure 3).

Flexible handling at the point of use

At the mounting location, the unit can be
rotated while it is suspended in the carrying
slings. The handles of the BM are the axis of
156 849

rotation. The BM can thus be used for the

whole handling procedure from transport up
Figure 2
to and including mounting.
Furthermore, the bearing mounted in the
tool can easily be heated using an induction
heater.

Suitable bearings
The outside diameter (D) and maximum
mass (m) of a suitable bearing are shown on
a label (Figure 4).
Caution!
The mass of a suitable bearing or rotationally
symmetrical part must not exceed 500 kg.
The outer ring must be clean, free from
grease and oil and the outside surface must
be cylindrical in shape. Any other
specifications must also be fulfilled.

roller bearings and self-aligning
ball bearings: max. 170 mm/270 mm,

Checking the tool

Caution!
All labels must be present and easily legible
(page 3, Figure 1). Before any use, the steel
strips and handles must be checked for
cracks, fractures, deformation, bends,
notches, corrosion, wear etc. The steel strips
must be fully extended and thoroughly
cleaned (Figure 5). Figure 5

What to do if the tool is damaged

Caution!
If the mounting and carrying tool is
damaged, it must not be used.
If the strips or handles are damaged,
the complete tool must always be sent to
Customer Services.
For contact by e-mail, see page 10.

Cleaning
Caution!

156 854
If the bearing has an oily outer ring, it may
slip out of the tool when lifted. The bearing
outer ring must be dry and all greases, Figure 6
oils and foreign matter must be removed.
– Clean the bearing outer ring (Figure 6).

Mounting of tool
■ The steel strips must be positioned
centrally on the outer ring
(see label, Figure 7)
■ The ends of the handles should be
rotated uniformly in a clockwise direction
by hand until the steel strips are pulled in
to the same extent (see label) and are
firmly in contact with the bearing. 156 855

■ Tighten the screw heads (24 mm) on the

ends of the handles using a torque
wrench (14 Nm to 20 Nm) Figure 7
(see label, Figure 8).

Description of the transport and mounting strip

Mounting the retaining brackets

■ In the case of spherical roller bearings
and self-aligning ball bearings,
secure the inner ring:
– The bearing outer ring is marked on one
side. Insert both retaining brackets on
this side
– Align the retaining brackets parallel
(Figure 9) until they are in contact with
the inner ring
– Tighten the retaining brackets

156 850
Caution!
The retaining brackets must not extend
beyond the inner ring and must both be Figure 9
fitted on the same side of the bearing.

Fitting the carrying slings

Caution!
If a crane is used for transport, carrying
slings must be used. Chains must not be
used (see label, Figure 10).
The carrying slings must be positioned
between the contact surface of the handle
and the flange (Figure 11).
– Position two carrying slings of equal
156 857

length around the handles

(page 3, Figure 3).
– Support the carrying slings on a crane Figure 10
hook.

Transport
Caution! 1
Additional security against dropping must
be provided (safety belt, length 2,5 m)
(Figure 12, ).
It must be ensured that nobody is
underneath the bearing at any time during
transport.
The hazardous area must be secured.
The bearing must be transported without
shocks or vibration.

156 859
– Bearings must be transported carefully.

Mounting the bearing Figure 12

■ Rotate the bearing at the mounting
location if necessary (Figure 13).
The handles serve as the axis when
rotating the bearing.
Caution!
The retaining brackets must not protrude
beyond the inner ring.
– Mount the bearing
– Remove the retaining brackets
– Loosen the handles and remove the BM.

Heating of bearings using an

156 860

FAG induction heater (Figure 14)

■ Place the bearing with the mounted BM Figure 13
on an FAG induction heater
■ Heat the bearing inner ring to a maximum
max. 120 ˚C
of +120 °C
■ After heating, ensure that the torque is
14 Nm to 20 Nm using a torque wrench.

Inspection and maintenance

Inspection
The BM must be inspected at least once a
year (for the first time approx. one year after
manufacture). If the relevant regulations
require more frequent inspection, match the
inspection period to the relevant
regulations.
■ Check the date of manufacture
(Figure 15): 04.34 indicates the
year 2004, week 34
■ Inspection must only be carried out by
authorised personnel

156 862
■ Inspect the tool in the same way as before
each use and in accordance with local Figure 15
regulations
■ Prepare and archive an inspection record:
date of inspection, results (free from
defects or description of any defects),
name and position of the inspector
■ If you have any questions relating to
inspection, please send us an e-mail
(see page 10).

Maintenance
Maintenance is a precondition for low wear.
■ Every 6 months, lubricate the four entry
156 863

points of the strip using the lubricant
