Natural disasters
An adverse event is defined as a natural process of the Earth that can affect
the lives of our families, neighbors and friends. Some serious adverse
events are floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, fires or droughts.
During the last twenty year, Venezuela was affected by some of these
events. In 2005, El Valle de Mocotíes, estado Mérida, was flooded by the
rise of Mucuchíes and San Francisco rivers.
Due to extreme droughts that were caused by the el niño phenomenon and
climatic change, great extensions of national forests such as Parque
National Hery Pittier and the Waraira Repano were destroyed by wildfires
during 2010.
