THE PROBLEM
Lately, technology has been raised rapidly simultaneous by
the new technology era. There are plenty of gadgets created by
inventors. One of the gadgets is the smart phones. This device
is viewed as an important communication tool and had become an
integral part of the world society. Then, these smart phones
become popular among college students. On top of that, students
are able to use mobile phones in many ways. Through mobile
phones, they can access some information by means of internet,
they can communicate with friends anytime and anywhere, for
entertainment like mobile games, movies and social media sites
and also they can use their mobile phones in their study. In
European Journal of Scientific Research, Muhammad and Tariq
(2013) state that “mobile phones are used widely by college
students”. So, this drastic growth of mobile phones use by
college students on campus has impacts and effects that are
obvious in education, health and in social life. These mobile

phones have affected students in many ways either positive or
negative.
Students use their mobile phones in their study. They are
able to search any kind of information or something that is
related to their studies. This encourages them to seek some
information such as articles, dictionary, research, encyclopedia
and many more. According to Norazah, (20013) “Information is
easy to access with the mobile phones and its constants
connectivity to the internet”. This can help them finish their
assignments, projects and etc. faster. Moreover, students can
save their time to find references from the library. Mobile
phones really have become part on student’s life on campus.
Internet access has exposed many adolescents to different kinds
of contents. Just of recent, the availability of different kinds
of affordable and inexpensive android mobile phones made it very
easy for the adolescents to have access to different types of
social media and pornographic sites where they access, download,
exchange and watch pornographic films of different sexual
orientations from all over the world. The situation is worsened
by the ignorance and carefree attitudes of parents who are

mostly oblivious of and careless about these adolescents’ needs
and challenges. (Taylor & Harper 2003).
The continuous downwards spiraling in academic performance,
the rise in cases of drop-outs, the increase in most of the
unacceptable, immoral, and antisocial behaviors perpetrated by
students in secondary schools today, which include truancy,
massive failures, exam malpractices, improper dress codes,
indiscriminate sexual relationships with opposite as well as
same sex and most violent behaviors, can mainly be attributed to
the influence of the mobile phone.
According to majority of research done so far, it was
discovered that the use of mobile phone in schools is
problematic. As Ling and Helmersen states, the mobile phone is
“at cross purpose with the mission of the school”. While in
school students are supposed take on their prescribed roles as
student with full concentration on their studies and free from
contact with the outside world. However, the mobile phone gives
room to blending students’ roles with other roles thus
distracting and disrupting the students’ academic work (Gergen,
2002;Halpen, 2003; &Franzini, 2002). In the past when fixed
telephones were the norm in schools, there were minimum

distractions and disruptions but presently with the invasion of
mobile phone and the eagerness of parents to maintain contact
with their wards, the device is becoming part of the classroom.
Thus, the mobile phone has the power to undermine the schools’
authority and weaken their control over students as well as
affects their level of academic performances.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Mobile phones are now part of most people’s lives today
especially to the students presently. It is now very common
sight today in our society and in our school, you can commonly
see students going to class/school with their phones on their
hand or in their ear, some are expensive, big, thin and flashy.
Mobile phones that has all the applications, facilities and
software that can connect them to the internet and all forms of
social media sites, other websites and so on, where they can
chat, post selfies, access, stream, upload and download
different kind of media contents which most often are
pornographic in nature (Olofuniyi,Fashiku,&Owombo2012).
Instead of concentrating on their classroom work, they gave
more emphasis to the use of the mobile phone in their classes
and boarding houses. This may be partly attributed to poor
teaching methods, lack of teaching materials, lack of
supervision by the parents and the teachers etc, and this may
affect the students’ performance or achievement in school. The

mobile phone usage pattern of most of these students, during and
after school hours, such as their level of engagement in free
night calls, chatting, instant messaging, social networking and
exam malpractices etc. is greatly influencing their academic
performance.
This study aims to find out the effects of
technological development of mobile phones to the academic
performance of Bachelor in Secondary Education 4-A.
specifically, this study aims to answer the following
questions:
1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:
a. Age
b. Sex
2. How frequent does the students use their mobile phones in
class?
3. What is the usage of mobile phone that affects the
academic performance of BSE 4A?
4. What are the positive and negative effects of using
mobile phones among the students from BSE 4A in their
academic performance?

THEORETICAL PARADIGM
Erikson (1968), in his psychosocial theory, describes post
adolescence as a period of searching for identity. Young adults
struggle with identifying who they are, to what group they
belong and who they want to be. Elkind (1967), in his theory on
adolescent egocentrism, pointed out heightened self-
consciousness during adolescence. Young adults also become
extremely self-conscious and pay significant attention to what
peers think of them. Both Erikson and Elkind highlighted
increased peer influence on youth. An empirical study also
confirmed that youth are particularly susceptible to trends,
fashions and styles, which make them more willing to adopt new
technological devices and certain behavioral characteristics
(Ling, 2001).
Both theoretical perspectives and previous empirical
studies suggest that the recent rapid increase in cell phones
has influenced multiple aspects of our daily lives, particularly

those of young adults. The aim of the current study, therefore,
is to examine how important it is and how does it affect the
academic performance of college students to use and their usage
pattern of cell phone in class rooms, the impact of mobile phone
on learning and the effects of mobile phone on the academic
skills acquired age wise and education wise, income wise and by
living status. Gender differences were also examined to provide
additional evidence that clarifies current controversial
findings.

ASSUMPTIONS
This research study pursued to determine and identify the
effects of mobile phones in the academic performance of BSE-4A
students of Baao Community College school year 2017.
This study focuses on male and female and in different ages
taking up the Bachelor of Secondary Education, fourth year
students, section A.
 The students from BSE 4A usually and commonly uses
mobile phones for their assignment, reference books
(e-books), research and entertainment.
 The respondents often use their mobile phones for
browsing different sites such as YouTube, Facebook,
Google, etc. with the help of internet.
 The respondents of this research are expected to
respond with honesty in answering the given
questionnaire.

HYPOTHESIS
There is no significant difference on the influence of the
frequency of mobile phone usage on academic performance among
male and female in different age groups, different parent’s
occupation in BSE 4A students.
There is a large effect and influence in each student’s
academic performance in their attention span level, study habit,
and such. Mobile phone use also has effects not only in their
academic performance but also in their physical activities, and
other hobbies.
 It is faster for respondents to use mobile phones as a
tool in finding meanings and in research.
 The use of mobile phone gives the learners more
efficient and reliable sources in collecting
information that can help them in their research and
in study.
 Mobile phones also has its negative effects among
learners such as browsing inappropriate sites,

different false information they could acquire, and
for being neglectful to their studies.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study was an attempt to address specific issue
particularly to the effects of mobile phones on the academic
performance of the BSE 4A students. This research is expected to
contribute and help to give solution that can help to prevent
some certain issues with regards to the affecting issue to the
academic performance of the students.
This study can help the following:
To Students. This research study was conducted to determine the
effects of mobile phones on the students’ academic performance;
therefore, students themselves are the paramount and the focus
of this. It can help them realize the benefits they could get
from this research.
To Parents. The students are the main concern of this study
however; they are not the only ones who are considered as main
respondents but also parents. This research can also help them

determine the factors that can affect their child’s performance
in school and help them prevent from bad influences.
To Educators. This study can not only help parents from guiding
their children to right path, but also this research could help
teachers identify the factors influencing the academic
performance of their students in school. They could easily
determine the appropriate measure in selecting teaching method
through technological tools that his/her students can relate
from.
To Administrators. School is considered as the second home of
every student. This research can help the administrators
facilitate his/her school well by providing efficient
environment and influences that can help students, and
determining the leading influences that can affect the
performance of students.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION
This study is to be conducted to determine the effects of
mobile phones in the academic performance among students from
the Bachelor in Secondary Education, fourth year section A at
the Baao Community College, Baao, Camarines Sur, Philippines.
The aspects will look into priorities, span of attention to
class discussion, study and sleeping habit, and usage of mobile
phone. How does it affect their academic performance?

-a kind of book or reading material that is installed
and can be open inside a phone or any electronic

-it is a kind of an electronic device which is a size
or smaller than a palm that people can bring with them

SYNTHESIS OF THE STATEMENT OF THE ART
According to Risto J. Moisio (2003), University of Nebraska
B Lincoln, negative consequences of technology are not
properties of technologies themselves but reflection of
particular “way of consuming” that embodies a particular
definition of technology and conceptualization of its uses. The
time and money wastage of young generation is the highly rated
negative aspect of mobile phones dependence. On the other hand,
it also has negative effect on their social behavior and
education. It was concluded in a study in Sakarya University
Turkey (2013) that young people text at least 5 times a day and
want to reply immediately. This shows that when frequency of
mobile phone use increases, addiction level gets higher. It was
also found that when the mobile phone addiction level increases
in the students, their sleep quality deteriorates.
Amna Baig, Quaid-I-Azam University of Islamabad finds that
majority of young students showed emotional instability towards
mobile phones which leads to anxiety, restlessness,

sleeplessness and depression. The excessive users of mobile
phone also become prone to various mental, physical and
psychological diseases.
These researches only concluded that the dependence of a
person to a mobile phone is not just because of technological
devices only but also because of the user itself. It maybe has a
positive effect on us but it also has a negative. In this
statement above- so much exposure to mobile phone can give a
person different illnesses.
It is just a matter of responsibilities in handling
changing and innovating technology, proper way of use is much
necessary than what we want and desires.

LITERATURE REVIEW
A. Mobile Phone
The mobile phone was originally made for adults for
business use. This is extremely similar to the fixed
telephone in the early 20th century, where telephone
engineers explained that the telephone was made for the
business world and not for social conversation. The
growth of mobile phone technology is demonstrated by the
fact that in 2002 the number of mobile phone users
worldwide, surpassed those of fixed-phone users. It has
been predicted that by the end of 2005, the number of
mobile phone subscribers worldwide will reach 2 billion
(Deloitte Research, 2005) and in Australia will reach
19.2 million.
According to Rich Ling, the mobile phone has
fundamentally affected our society, accessibility,
safety, and security, co-ordination of social and

business activities. It has become the part of culture of
every region in the world. The craze of mobile phone
started after 1980’s, but it has now touched the level of
esteem. First, it was just for a status symbol but now it
has become a dire need of the day and is in the reach of
everyone.
B. Uses of Mobile Phone
The usefulness of cell phones is numerous and this
includes keeping contact with friends, members of the
family, conducting business and others. Many people
possess more than one mobile phone for different
purposes, which could be for business purpose or personal
purpose. A number of people are also taking the advantage
of multiple SIM cards for benefit of different calling
plans since a calling plan might provide cheaper local
calls, long-distance calls, international calls, or
roaming. The following are other benefits;
Distributing content: Media content emerged which
includes news, video games, jokes, horoscopes, TV content
and advertising. In 2006, the total value of mobile-
phone-paid media content exceeded Internet-paid media

content and was worth 31 billion dollars. The value of
music on phones was worth 9.3 billion dollars in 2007 and
gaming was worth over 5 billion dollars in 2007.
Tracking and privacy: cell phones are also often used to
gather location data. As long as the phone is switched
on, the geographical location of a mobile phone can be
determined easily, with the help of a technique known as
multilateration to calculate the differences in time for
a signal to move from the cell phone to each of several
cell towers near the owner of the phone. The movements of
a mobile phone user can be tracked by their service
provider and, if desired, by law enforcement agencies and
their government. Both the SIM card and the handset can
be tracked. China has proposed using this technology to
track commuting patterns of Beijing city residents. In
the UK and US, law enforcement and intelligence services
use mobiles to perform surveillance. They possess
technology to activate the microphones in cell phones
remotely in order to listen to conversations that take
place near the phone.
C. Impact of Mobile Phone on Education

Mobile phones easily promote collaborative and different
types of learning through their wireless connection to
the internet. Their adoption in learning processes by the
higher institution management as student-learning and
communication device tools is useful. In the classroom
mobile phones motivate students to be more engaged to the
lesson promoting learner-centered participation. This
indicates the dynamic support that the mobile phone has
brought to students’ learning practice. According to
Barker, Krull, and Mallinson, the impacts of mobile phone
technologies on learning are portability, collaboration
and motivation enhancing students, parents and teachers’
education system. The mobile phone portability enables
student learning to be ubiquitous in obtaining or
retrieving course information through their mobile phones
as they are carried from class to class or wherever.
Their portability can improve a wide variety of learning
settings, namely a field trip, the classroom, or outside
the campus. Collaboration Social networks such as
Facebook and Twitter accessed on students’ mobile phones
allow students to form groups to distribute and add

together their knowledge, and share information with
ease, and this could result in a more successful
collaborative learning. The use of mobile phones results
in increasing parents’ involvement in education, and thus
their children’s learning and capabilities. Motivation
where mobile phones are incorporated in a large
classroom, students appear to be more engaged in learning
processes. Mobile phones in education increase students’
will to learn. They take the initiative in using the
device as a learning tool. Teachers report that the use
of mobile phones in learning increases group
participation.

Foreign related study
A study from Aligarh Muslim University, India said that the
world is becoming increasingly dependent upon technology.
Technology is playing a crucial role in contemporary society. It
has transformed the world from a primitive communal to an
industrialized world. The internet has become a major
shareholder. Developing nations can derive tremendous advantage
from this technology for updating the knowledge of its
researchers and scientists. Even educational organizations are
influenced by the development of information technology. The
most obvious example has been the introduction of information
technology related courses.
This study concluded that society expects to be able to
manipulate the information it has for its own benefits, to
increase understanding and discover new relation.

Local related study
From the journal of Jerry Liao of Manila Bulletin,
Technology has brought a lot of benefits to mankind. It made
most of us more effective and efficient both in our professional
and personal tasks. But as much as there are a lot of
advantages, there are still those who are more innovative than
others- like using technology in some other ways, the bad ways.
From Ronald S. Lim’s journal, the temptation to cheat is even
easier for today’s technologically-advanced youth. With mobile
phones making the transmission of messages easier and the
internet making the sharing of information much quicker, today’s
Filipino students can just as easily download his answers from a
computer as he can from looking at his seatmate’s answers.
However, it would seem that the tried and tested technique
of looking at the answer of seatmates, passing around notes, and
“reliable” classmates are the methods preferred by today’s young
Filipinos. Technology, particularly mobile phones, once again
came under fire because of the pinoy youth’s new texting style.
Now a national phenomenon, the Jejemons’ improper use of words

have caused alarmed among parents and teachers alike. Teachers
have complained about their students’ adapting this newfound
language in their regular schoolwork. In this case, instead of
making things better, technology has been distorted and has
caused bad influence on today’s generation.
However, also from Manila Bulletin, a journal of Angelo G.
Garcia, says there’s a lesson from mobile phones. Technology has
done more good than harm for the youth admittedly. The advent of
e-book readers, for instance, has made books more available to
everyone with just a touch of button. Laptop computers are being
used as an affordable education device to children around the
world. Even mobile phones are now channels to each child.
In our society, it is now considered that mobile phones are
one of the needs not a want. In fact the Philippines have been
crowned as the Texting Capital of the world due to the
overwhelming number of SMS messages it sends each day. An SWS
survey conducted in 2001 strongly proves this point: “out of the
15 million households in the Philippines, an estimated 2.5
million have mobile phone, of which 2.3 million have text
messaging capacity.

METHODS AND PROCEDURES
The study subjects are students from the Baao Community
College, Baao, Camarines Sur. Quantitative research method was
used to properly analyze and give a clear picture of the study.
The population for the study comprised of estimated 1% of the
population of the school for the academic year 2017-2018 in the
first semester. This was used as sample for the study. The data
obtained for the survey was collected in the middle of October
2017. It was collected by issuing out questionnaires to the
respondents. Close ended questions were adopted which provided
answers that are easy for interpretation and tabulation. A total
of 20 copies of questionnaire were distributed to students of
institution including those in different specialization. The
returned copies of questionnaire were analyzed using percentage
and frequency count.

METHODS USED
The study adopted the survey research design. I considered
this method appropriate as it is useful for the study of non-
observable events such as opinions, attitude preferences or
dispositions.
RESPONDENTS
The study population consisted of randomly picked students
from Bachelor in Secondary Education academic year 2017-2018,
fourth year students in different specialization, in different
ages and gender of Baao Community College, Baao, Camarines Sur.

PROCEDURE OF INVESTIGATION
The students were randomly selected on campus to administer
the questionnaire. It is expected therefore that the findings of
the study will have equal applicability to other students in the
school. The survey questionnaire was accordingly, administered
physically and taken back immediately and some after a day.
DATA GATHERING TOOLS
The survey was a self-administered process wherein the
respondent him/herself reads the questions and records answer
without the assistance of the interviewer. The questionnaire was
designed to collect relevant information. The questions were
numbered for easy references and arranged so that the
respondents can understand easily the reason of each question.
Each questionnaire contained four parts of checklists:

(i) the personal information checklist,
(ii) mobile phones in classroom checklist,
(iii) usage of mobile phones,
(iv) Effects of mobile phones in learning achievements.

used in order to analyze or test the usage frequency for mobile
phones of Fourth Year, B.S.E., Section A.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA
The data gathered from the respondents were subjected to
statistical tool. The statistical used was percentage technique.
PERCENTAGE TECHNIQUE
This instrument was used to determine the percentage of the
result of the respondents’ level of usage for mobile phones
along personal profile.

constituted 5 in number whereas female students included 15 and
majority 90% are between the ages of 19-21 years taking up
Bachelor in Secondary Education, 35% are in a relationship, 5%
is married and majority are single.

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter is the presentation of the summary of findings
where conclusions were and recommendations were based.
SUMMARY
Many research studies all over the world reported that
rampant use of social networking, texting and chatting on mobile
phones result in lower grades and poor academic performance of
students. In this context, the study focused on analyzing the
effects of mobile phones among the students of BSE 4A of Baao
Community College, Baao, Camarines Sur School Year 2017-2018.
The main following problems were given answers such as:
How frequent does the students of BSE 4A of Baao Community
College use their mobile phones in class?
What is the usage of mobile phone that affects the academic
performance of BSE 4A?

Using the graph provided above, 70% of the respondents
answered that they often use their mobile phone in class, 85% of
the respondents answered that they also often read and send SMS
in class and 70% responded that they as well often answer a call
in class.

In response to questions asking the purpose for using cell
phone in classrooms, the respondents revealed that they often
send and read SMS in classrooms in the top order of priority.
And most of them tend to answer and make a call during class.
Recommendation 1.3
Based on the findings on the problem 1 of this study, the
recommendation was made that school teachers, school
administrators and students as well should be aware of this
rampant usage of mobile phones even in class. The school is
recommended to have briefings to formulate their rules and
regulations with regards to the usage of mobile phones during
class.

that they always browse social media sites using their mobile
phones, and 55% of them often watch movies, research on the
internet and majority of 50% them also answered that they never
read E-books.

Findings 3.1
Using the graph provided above, majority of 90% responded
that they can easily contact everyone for study purposes, 45%
agreed that mobile phones help them increase their academic
performance, and 95% of the respondents agreed about phone’s
influence in their academic performance are positive.

phones in learning achievement, the respondents revealed that
majority of them agreed that the effects of mobile phones in
their learning achievement were good and positive. It helped
them in their studies when it comes to calculations, dictionary
and even helps them increase and improve their academic
performance.
Recommendation 3.3
recommendation was made that school teachers and parents should
still monitor their students’ and children’s academic
performance. Mobile phones still have lots of positive effects
on students unless this be used in negative purposes.

mobile phones usually disturb their studies.
Recommendation 4.3
recommendation was made that school teachers and parents should
definitely guide their students’ and children’s academic
performance. Always monitor and observe them in class and in
home. Authorities that provide students should be aware of the
possible negative effects of mobile phones to their children and
students. Mobile phones are useful in many ways but can be also
useful in negative motives and purposes.

Lately, technology has been raised rapidly simultaneous by

the new technology era. There are plenty of gadgets created by

inventors. One of the gadgets is the smart phones. This device

is viewed as an important communication tool and had become an

integral part of the world society. Then, these smart phones

become popular among college students. On top of that, students

are able to use mobile phones in many ways. Through mobile

phones, they can access some information by means of internet,

they can communicate with friends anytime and anywhere, for

entertainment like mobile games, movies and social media sites

(2013) state that “mobile phones are used widely by college

students”. So, this drastic growth of mobile phones use by

college students on campus has impacts and effects that are

obvious in education, health and in social life. These mobile

phones have affected students in many ways either positive or

related to their studies. This encourages them to seek some

information such as articles, dictionary, research, encyclopedia

and many more. According to Norazah, (20013) “Information is

easy to access with the mobile phones and its constants

connectivity to the internet”. This can help them finish their

assignments, projects and etc. faster. Moreover, students can

save their time to find references from the library. Mobile

phones really have become part on student’s life on campus.

Internet access has exposed many adolescents to different kinds

of contents. Just of recent, the availability of different kinds

of affordable and inexpensive android mobile phones made it very

easy for the adolescents to have access to different types of

social media and pornographic sites where they access, download,

exchange and watch pornographic films of different sexual

orientations from all over the world. The situation is worsened

by the ignorance and carefree attitudes of parents who are

mostly oblivious of and careless about these adolescents’ needs

and challenges. (Taylor & Harper 2003).

The continuous downwards spiraling in academic performance,

the rise in cases of drop-outs, the increase in most of the

unacceptable, immoral, and antisocial behaviors perpetrated by

students in secondary schools today, which include truancy,

massive failures, exam malpractices, improper dress codes,

indiscriminate sexual relationships with opposite as well as

same sex and most violent behaviors, can mainly be attributed to

the influence of the mobile phone.

According to majority of research done so far, it was

discovered that the use of mobile phone in schools is

problematic. As Ling and Helmersen states, the mobile phone is

“at cross purpose with the mission of the school”. While in

school students are supposed take on their prescribed roles as

student with full concentration on their studies and free from

room to blending students’ roles with other roles thus

distracting and disrupting the students’ academic work (Gergen,

2002;Halpen, 2003; &Franzini, 2002). In the past when fixed

telephones were the norm in schools, there were minimum

distractions and disruptions but presently with the invasion of

mobile phone and the eagerness of parents to maintain contact

with their wards, the device is becoming part of the classroom.
