Assignment Title: Effect of exercise on the musculoskeletal, respiratory and cardiovascular

systems

Assignment Brief

Use the task sheet provided to produce a written assignment adhering to the word limits
specified.

Assignment 2
Using practical activities to observe and measure how physical activity influences the
musculoskeletal, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, conduct a practical investigation and
create a scientific report detailing how varying physical activities influence body system responses.

● In your practical investigation, determine the impact of at least 2 different types of physical
activity on the body systems (musculoskeletal, respiratory and cardiovascular).
● Include a control variable, where the resting rate responses are taken.
● Ensure the report addresses the following.
O The anatomical and physiological (structure and function) theory for the
respiratory system.
o Evaluate any effect of short term responses of the respiratory system to
exercise. Do the results for the different activities differ? If so, why?
o Evaluate the long term effects of the 2 types of activity on the 3 systems
identified.
o Are results for different physical activities similar? Why?
Your report should be written in an appropriate style (a guide is attached). (1500 words)
Guide for Task 2 Report

LABORATORY REPORT

Your report should include the following sections:

Title: A short and unambiguous statement, stating exactly what the report is about. (15-50
words)
Abstract: An overview of the experiment. It should summarise the aim of the investigation,
the methods of investigation, the most important results, the major conclusions and
significance. (150 words)
Key-words: 5 or 6 words that would act as keywords in an internet search for someone
that would be interested in reading the report
Introduction: A summary of the scientific theory that would be required to understand the
report. This should include the structure and function of the component parts of the
respiratory system and the effect of exercise on relevant body systems. (500 words)
Method: The purpose of the method is to provide enough detail for another scientist to
repeat the experiment. The method is written in the past passive tense and includes the
materials and equipment used, the procedure followed and the precautions taken to carry
out the experiment accurately and safely. Include diagrams where required to describe the
set up (not just pictures). Quantify the concentrations, measurements and amounts of
materials used. Do not include any results in this section. (250 words, depending on the
complexity of the procedure.)
Results: The observations and the mathematical / graphical analysis of the data. The
observations, measurements and calculated values should be organized in tables where
possible. Include any formulae used and show calculations. Report only the findings – do
not try to explain the results in this section.
Conclusion: Summarize the main conclusions (facts) found. The conclusion should not
introduce new information or attempt to explain the results - this goes in the discussion. (2
or 3 sentences 50-100 words)
Discussion: Describe the patterns, principles and relationships your results show. Explain
how the results relate to expectations and to the scientific concepts, principles and theories
given in the introduction. Identify where the results agree with, or contradict, the expected
result and suggest reasons why. (300 words)
Evaluation: Identify any steps of the method that were not followed and any sources of
error. Explain the effect these factors would have had on the results. Explain how the
design of the experiment could be changed in order to avoid particular problems. Describe
what additional investigative research might resolve contradictions or explain anomalous
results. (150 words)
References: A list of sources cited in the text of the report (listed in alphabetical order by
surname of the author).
