Title of the Article/Book: The Relevance of Fashion

Author/Date: Claudia Cividino, December 6, 2017
URL (if it is from a website online): https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-relevance-of-fashion_n_138178

According to the blog entry, “The great designers almost always ask, how do we make -- or what makes
-- fashion relevant? It's a weighty question for an industry that can be perceived as fluffy.” It is said in the blog
that for clothes to be relevant they need to be aligned with our values as they shift from one era to another. And
as time passes by, we become wary of disposable wardrobes. Even if you want things to last from a trendy
fashion, disposable clothes, unfortunately it wouldn’t. Eventually the seams will split, the hem will fall, and the
buttons will give out. Obsolescence was built into the garment. Cividino (2017) suggested “I think more and more
we feel the pull to conserve, and make more sober decisions about what we choose to spend our money on. We
want to know that there is value in a garment, and that if we're going to invest in an item, it will look great for
seasons, and will become an expression of us.” People now are being aware on the things that they are going
to spend their money on and invest. Each individual have a personal criterion in making these decisions. Thus,
this become an expression of themselves. A simple sense of personal luxury, or ease makes fashion relevant
today. Having time on your hands and being relaxed, comfortable in your own skin and your clothes, ease of
movement, ease of expression...being at ease, looking at ease. Lastly, the author concludes her blog by stating
“People basically want versatility, wearability, and we want this luxury at a non-aggressive price. I suspect that
what we want ultimately is a collection of choices that only the wearer can get right, because... fashion does not
make the wearer...the wearer makes fashion.”
In relation to our study which tackles the Relevance of Old Fashion Styles to the Current Fashion Trends.
This blog entry validates the relevance of Fashion today. Taking into consideration the disposable
wardrobe/clothes stated in the blog where nothing lasts forever, in the case of fashion, obsolescence takes into
place. This blog entry made the researchers aware about that values is a factor in making Fashion relevant
today, how does a person invest into something, that Fashion gives everyone freedom to express themselves.
Furthermore, this explains that a simple sense of personal luxury makes Fashion relevant today. It is at the
wearer’s discretion how he/she will interpret his/her personal style.

Title of the Article/Book: Does Fashion Influence Society?

influence-society/

It is suggested in this blog entry the author emphasizes the idea of Fashion taking over the world. In other
others, Fashion is introduced to the society therefore it influences the people inside. Fashion is all around us,
whether we are conscious or unconscious of it. Wherever we go, we see a variety of fashion styles wore by
different types of people. Admittedly, there are people who take fashion seriously, while others couldn’t care less
about what to wear they are the kind of people who doesn’t have interest in Fashion and find it unnecessary to
keep up with the latest trends. However, what we don’t recognize is that what the models wear on the runway
are not so different compared to what the rest of the society wear everyday. Fashion is constantly changing,
every season comes new collections, styles, and fashion trends. But the society are unconscious of the influence
of Fashion to them. The style of clothing we wear on a regular basis is based on personal taste. On the other
hand, these clothes are most likely worn by models on the runway before it comes to the market. According to
the blog, ”Those people who don’t know the first thing about fashion or claim that they don’t follow the new
fashion trends, they are still being influenced by fashion in one way or another, even if they aren’t aware of it
themselves.” Perhaps most of the society feels insecure to those who introduce/wear new fashion trends for a
living. They think that they can’t pull it off compared to the models who have walked the runway. This may be a
reason of those people who do not follow fashion religiously. The author suggested that what society needs to
realize is that unless you’re one of those models on the catwalk, you’re just like everyone else buying their
designs/clothing in the stores.
In connection to our study, this blog explains what is the influence of fashion in our society. This blog
provided the researchers information that’ll greatly contribute in conducting their research such as Fashion is a
based on personal preference, what you wear reflects what you are as a person. There are people who are
serious about it, while some of them give no importance to it. Another, that this recognizes the development of
fashion for it is constantly changing from time to time. Lastly, models are used as a medium for introducing new
fashion trends to the society. It may be pro to the designer because they’re work are being showcased to the
public. On the other hand, it may be a con to the ordinary consumers, wherein they would feel envious causing
them to have low self-esteem thinking that they can’t pull off what those models wear on the catwalk. However,
at the end of the day everyone is just same and will end up buying the newly introduced fashion style.

According to Cheng (2018) “As ephemeral as trends are, they have a way of coming back—even the
most polarizing ones—years, and sometimes decades, later. Fashion’s cyclical nature makes their return
inevitable. And for today’s top trends, it looks as though designers and celebrities have borrowed style cues from
the past to craft looks that feel at once modern and retro.” This justifies that fashion styles are timeless and is
still applicable to the current trends as Straw Bags, Fanny Packs, Power Suits, etc. Their only difference is that
the way of executing the style in a better way for it to be relevant today. The article have presented a look book
showcasing different items from old fashion styles and comparing them to today’s interpretation of the product.
It is in deniably similar to each other.
In this short article, it presented information such as the difference and coherence of old fashion items to
its latest interpretation today through providing a look book. This validates that fashion styles eventually
innovates and comes back in the latest fashion trends which explains the idea/concept merging old designs and

Author/Date: Lily Rothman, November 21, 2017

In the 1960s, the fashion world turned “topsy-turvy,” as TIME noted in 1967. Nearly every aspect of that
revolutionary decade, from the civil-rights movement to the space race, was somehow reflected in the clothing
worn by American women. As the rate of changing trends accelerated throughout the 1960s, women who cared
about clothes threw off old norms about what was proper just as much of American society broke loose from
restrictions of the past. Black models and African-inflected clothing inspired and reflected the pride of the civil-
rights movement. Feminism was embodied first in miniskirts, which defied the model femininity of the 1950s, and
then with clothing designed for women in careers.
The relation of this article to our study, it emphasizes how fashion spreads it’s influence to people, it was
shown that the fashion from the past is still being acknowledge until today and it somehow changed people in
different aspects like in attitude, values and etc. Amongst other factors, the current economic climate appears
to have contributed to the trend of acquiring and reusing vintage clothing, accessories, and homeware products,
particularly with young consumers. Recently it has emerged as a stronger fashion trend and the movement is
showing the potential to increase further as consumers adopt new trends towards fashion.

Fashion shows have been loved, adored, and critiqued equally over decades. Every season is much
awaited because of the new collection of designs that fashion designers showcase on the catwalk. “Couture
shows have always drawn attention of the who’s who of the fashion world and this is not something that everyone
understands or appreciates.” In other words, these shows gives the fashion designers the opportunity to display
their creativity and passion in fashion. Furthermore, they are the ones that define what the year or the season is
going to look like. However, not everybody sees the relevance and the contributions of fashion the society.

Over time, Cline had amassed 354 items of clothing, some of which she never wore. And such excesses
aren't all that unusual, she notes. Chains like H&M are constantly turning over their merchandise, introducing
ever-trendier clothing and feeding their customers' desire for novelty. The success of chains like H&M and
Forever 21 represents a paradigm shift in the retail world, one that has affected every corner of the industry. The
simple fact is that much fast fashion doesn't survive more than a few washings. Simon Collins, dean of fashion
at Parsons The New School for Design, likes the way fast fashion has brought a level of style to the masses, but
he laments how poorly made it can be. The industry will no doubt adapt over time, but the days when fashion
gets faster and cheaper every year are probably at an end.
In the relation of this article to our topic is that, over the time, new fashion replaces the old and people
are influenced by popular culture. When new style are starting to go on trend, they often want to imitate style
that is basically popular decade's past. And as we observed in the society, people dressed the way people style
before . They were influenced on the fashion that evolved during that time, people want to style the way they
want, and mostly, fashion designer seek out and create what is on trend in the society. They remain doing and
styling it over and over.
