ASCE provides a template (or starter file) to help authors prepare manuscripts for typeset books. The
template contains uniform settings for margins, type size, fonts, and spacing. It also contains style
sheets, preset names and formatting descriptions for different elements (such as “chapter title” or
“figure caption”) that can appear in a book manuscript. When applied, the style sheets identify (or “tag”)
manuscript elements, and the tags stay in place throughout the copyediting process. Use of this
template is optional.

GETTING STARTED
The ASCE Book Template is a Word file that can be downloaded. Authors can compose directly into the
file, applying style sheets as they go. Alternatively, they can insert an existing draft into the template
file, using Word’s Insert/File… feature.
The next step is to view the style sheet toolbar in order to apply the style sheets. In Word 2010 and later
versions, the individual style sheets can be viewed by showing the Styles window, so the list of styles
appears on the right side of the screen. Style sheets can then be applied by placing the cursor in a
paragraph and clicking on the appropriate style in the Style window. Style sheets can also be applied by
using preset shortcut keys.
Table 11 lists the available style sheets and corresponding keyboard shortcuts.
