Abstract

Kurniawan Kai. 2017. NIM : 321411060. Skripsi: The Flouting of

Cooperative Principle in Movie “Beastly” by Daniel Branz.

The objective of this study is to identify the types of flouted maxim that found
in “Beastly” and to explain the factors leading the speaker flouted the maxim in
“Beastly” movie. The method of this research is descriptive method.

The corpus of the data was taken from the utterances which are spoken by the
actors/actress in “Beastly” movie and the source of data is the film/movie “Beastly”

The results of this research shows that are flouting of conversation in four
maxim namely maxim of relevance with 7 utterances, maxim of quality with 5
utterances, maxim of quantity with 4 utterances and maxim of manner with 4
utterances. Therefore it can be conclude the flouting of relevance dominate the
flouting on the utterance of the movie. It means there are many utterances of the
movie do not be relevance

Key Words : Flouting, Cooperative Principle, “Beastly” Movie.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Basic consideration

In communicating, sometimes speaker use language that hard to understand by

the hearer. The hearer must interpret what speaker said without see the structure of

word or sentences. It has an implied meaning that contained in what the speaker say.

This phenomenon is a part of study in pragmatics that is implicature.

Pragmatics deals with the study of meaning. Yule (1996 : 3) “ Pragmatics is

concerned with the study of meaning as communicated by a speaker and interpreted

by a listener. It means that pragmatics is a study about meaning that is communicate

by speaker and translated by hearer. Speakers sometimes use sentences which are not

related to what the exact meaning. What they literally say might have another meaning.

It means that sometimes a speaker does not always use a clear word or sentence in

conveying their purpose. The hearer sometimes gives response to the speaker’s

question by using a sentence that implies something.

Implicature is one of study in Pragmatics. The word “implicature” is derived

from the verb “to imply” to tell something into something else. In other word it can be

said “indirect” or saying A through B. Horn ( 2006 : 3 ) states that implicature is a

component of speaker meaning that constitutes an aspect of what is meant in a

11
speaker’s utterance without being part of what is said.” It means that’s implicature does

not just to see of what the speaker said it more than to see what the speaker mean. when

speaker utterance something, it always have implied meaning that every sentence that

they use if they use impicature.

There is a part of implicature that called conversational implicature. Griffitsh

( 2006 : 134 ), Conversational implicatures are inferences that depend on the existence

of norms for the use of language, such as the widespread agreement that communicators

should aim to tell the truth. It has related with cooperative principle. Because when

someone flouted the cooperative principle the conversational implicature will be

generated.

The Cooperative Principle consists of four maxims, they are Maxim of Quantity

(Informative), Maxim of Quality (True), Maxim of Relevance (Relevant), and Maxim

of Manner (Brief and clear).

In this present research, the writer try to analyze the flouting cooperative

principle in beastly movie by Daniel Branz. The reason why the writer try to take this

subject in the research because this subject is always be in every conversation and

sometimes every people is hard to understand when someone try to use this in

conversation. In the real life, sometimes people flouting cooperative principle. For

example when someone try to trap their friends, or try to hiding something. When

someone try to hiding their emotion when they are angry, they never tell that they are

angry. They just said “it’s ok” but their face is didn’t smile. They didn’t tell the truth.

Actually it flouting maxim quality. My object of this research is a conversation from

12
movie beastly by Daniel Barnz. That movie adapted from novel beastly by Alex Finn.

The reason why the writer choose that movie, because the writer believes that there are

some characteristics of this movie has the data which the writer need to observ. When

the writer watched, the writer found some violation maxim make the writer feel excited

to take this movie as the object of this research. Here is the example of flouting

cooperative principle in beastly movie

Flouting maxim quality

Kendra : So I'd be like, going with you?

Kyle : Yeah.
Kendra : What about your girl friend?
Kyle : Deep-fried Barbie doll e-dumped me last night.
Kendra : Hey, I don't know what game this is, but I'll play.

It happened when Kyle try to invite Kendra in his party. In that conversation, kyle lied

to Kendra. He said that his girl dumped him last night but in the fact his girl friend still

with him. Actually He just want to try to trap Kendra. This conversation flout maxim

of quality where the speaker did not tell the truth.

Flouting maxim quantity

Kendra ; How are you feeling, Kyle?

Kyle ; Kendra? What're you doing here?

It happened when kyle feel so weird after he trap Kendra. And he go out from the party.

And Kendra come to him. This conversation flout maxim of quantity because Kyle did

not give information with his feeling to Kendra. He just try to ask back to Kendra.

Flouting Maxim of relevance

Kyle ; Elections today.

Rob ; Great

13
It happened when kyle try to get some help from his father but he did not get it . he

remind his father that election today and his father just say great. This conversation

flout maxim of relevance because Kyle said like that in order his father can help. But

his father just say great and call someone and leave him alone.

Flouting maxim of manner

Kendra ; When the spring flowers bloom again, the year is up, And either the words "I
love you" will release you from the spell or stay like this forever.
Kyle ; Like what?

This conversation happened when Kendra change kyle to be an ugly man. This

conversation flout maxim of manner because Kendra did not said what kyle look like.

She just said “like this’.

For the reasons, this movie become an interesting object analysis in this research.

Research questions

- What are the types of flouted maxim found in “Beastly”?

Research objective

- To identify the types of flouted maxim that found in “Beastly”

Research limitation

The data of present research is taking from beastly movie conversation. That is

why writer limit the data. The limitation is only from four flouting maxim that

happened in beastly movie conversation. The four flouting maxim are maxim of

quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, maxim of manner.

14
Research significance

1. The finding of the research will give useful information to the speakers or

hearers about their problems and difficulties in understanding the flouting of

cooperative principle in their utterances.

2. It will give the readers more knowledge in studying the maxim of cooperative

principle.

3. It is hoped that this research can give a contribution to other researchers to do

the some related researches with deeper and better techniques.

15
CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL BASES

The Concept of Pragmatics

In linguistics, pragmatics deals with semantics study whether both of them are

study about meaning. The different with semantics is, pragamatics have a implied

meaning in every sentence in the utterance. So the hearers must be know the situation

or context to understand what the speaker said. Leech (1983) said “pragmatics can be

usefully defined as the study of how utterances have meanings in situations”. Beside

that according to Yule (1996 : 3) “ Pragmatics is concerned with the study of meaning

as communicated by a speaker and interpreted by a listener. It means that pragmatics

is a study about meaning that is communicate by speaker and translated by hearer.

Beside that Yule also tell that “this type of study necessarily involves the interpretation

of what people mean in particular context and how the context influence what is said.

In this theory Yule explain that pragmatic is the study about what the speaker mean in

context and the hearer translated what is said based on context.

In addition Griffits (2006:1) states that Pragmatics is concerned with the use of

these tools in meaningful communication. He also said that Pragmatics is about the

interaction of semantic knowledge with our knowledge of the world, taking into

account contexts of use. He means that pragmatics is the way human communicate with

use.

16
With the explanation above the writer can conclude that pragmatics is a study

of meaning that communicated by the speaker and interpreted by the hearer and have

a meaning in situation.

Conversation

When you try to talk with someone, and someone respond or reply what you

talk, without you realized you were trying to build conversation. Beside that the speaker

and the hearer must know or understand what they talking about, to build a good

conversation. Like Cutting (2002;28) state that conversation is discourse mutually

constructed and negotiated in time between speakers; it is usually informal and

unplanned. It means that conversation must be two or more than that to do that because

when someone try to build some conversation it must be negotiated between speakers

and hearers. When someone try to build conversation it has beginning, middle and end.

According to Cook (in Cutting 2002), the term of conversation has some

characteristics as follow:

1. It is not primarily necessitated by a practical task.

2. Any unequal power of participants is partially suspended.

3. The number of participant is small.

4. Turns are quite short.

5. Talk is primarily for the participants and not for an outside audience.

Prior to or the beginning of a conversation, participants often frame the event. That is,

they make clear to each other the intended nature of the conversation to be.

17
Implicature

The word “implicature” is derived from the verb “to imply” to tell something

into something else. In other word it can be said “indirect” or saying A through B.

According to Horn ( 2006 : 3 ) states that implicature is a component of speaker

meaning that constitutes an aspect of what is meant in a speaker’s utterance without

being part of what is said.” It means that’s implicature does not just to see of what the

speaker said it more than to see what the speaker mean. Furthermore according to

Gazdar (1979 : 38 ) state that implicature is a proposition that is implied by the

utterance of a sentence in a context even though that proposition is not a part of nor an

entailment of what was actually said. Gazard believe that implicature is a utterance that

have another meaning with what the speaker said.

Beside that Yule ( 1996 : 35) state that “when the listener hears the expression,

he first has to assume that the speaker is being cooperative and intends to communicate

something. That something must be more than just words mean. It is an additional

conveyed meaning, called an implicature”. It means that when the listener hears the

utterance, the listener must know that what the speaker means. It can be something that

more than the word that speaker utterance.

Keidler (1998 : 301 ) state that” implicature A meaning derived not from what

is said but deduced from the necessary way of interpreting what is said”. He think that

when someone use implicature , it is not the real meaning that what they said, but it has

implied meaning in every word that they said. Furthermore, according to Riemer (2010

:118 ) ” the implicatures of an utterance are what it is necessary to believe the speaker

18
is thinking, and intending the hearer to think, in order to account for what they are

saying”.

So with all the theory above, I can conclude that, implicature is an utterance

that speaker said, with have an implied meaning and will be interprate by the hearer

based on the context. There are 2 parts of implicature. They are conventional

implicature and conversational implicature. But in this research, the writer just

explained about conversational implicature. Because it has related between flouting of

cooperative principle.

Conversational Implicature

According to Griffitsh ( 2006 : 134 ), Conversational implicatures are

inferences that depend on the existence of norms for the use of language, such as the

widespread agreement that communicators should aim to tell the truth. Beside that,

Riemer ( 2010 : 118) argued “Conversational implicatures are those that arise in

particular contexts of use, without forming part of the word’s characteristic or

conventional force: the choice of the term ‘conversational’ is explained by the fact that

Grice’s examples are mostly taken from imagined conversations.” It means that

conversational implicature is sentence that arise when the speaker use context to

utterance without see the word’s characteristic.

According to Then Ariel (2008:11 ) argued “conversational implicature are

often generated when encoded meaning seems to violate some Gricean maxim.” Ariel

believe that when an utterance breaks some Gricean maxim, a conversational

implicatures will be generated. In contrast to conversational implicature there is

19
conventional implicature. It elaborates about conventional implicature. The

conversational implicature discussed here, conventional implicature are not based on

the cooperative principle or the maxims. They do not have to occur in conversation,

and they do not depend on special contexts for their interpretation. Same with lexical

presuppositions, conventional implicatures are associated with specific words and have

a result in additional conveyed meanings when those words are used (George Yule,

1996: 45).

Maxim of Grice

Identified some of the communicational norms and showed how they are

involved in the reasoning that makes it possible for utterances to convey rather more

than is literally encoded in the underlying sentences. He proposed that four “maxims”

could be regarded as the basis for co-operative communication.( Grice in Griffit :

2006). The four maxim that grice mean are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality,

maxim of relation, and maxim of manner.

1. Maxim of quantity

i. Make you contribution as informative as is required (for the current

purposes of the exchange)

ii. Make your contribution as informative as is required

2. Maxim of Quality

i. Do not say what you believe to be false

ii. Do not say that for which you lack adequate evidence

20
3. Maxim of relation

i. Be relevant

4. Maxim of manner

i. Avoid obscurity of expression

ii. Avoid ambiguity

iii. Be brief

iv. Be orderly

The flouting of maxim

Cutting (2002:37) state that when speaker appear not to follow the maxims but

expect hearers to appreciate the meaning implied, we say that they are ‘flouting’ the

maxims. According to Cruse (2000: 360) the other ways in which implicature arise are

through deliberate flouting of maxims in circumstance in which:

a. It is obvious to the hearer that the maxims are being flouted.

b. It is obvious to the hearer that the speaker intends to hearer to be aware

that the maxims are being flouted.

c. There are no signs that the speaker is opting out of the cooperative

principle.

1. The maxim of quantity

The first maxim is maxim quantity, which say that make you

contribution as informative as is required. According to Cuting (2002:37), the

21
speaker who flouts the maxim of quantity seems to give too little or too much

information. Here the example

A: How do I look?
B: Your shoes are nice

(Cutting 2002 : 37)

In this convertation B not answer that her jeans or sweet shirt do not

look nice, but he knows that A will understand that implication, because A ask

about his look and B just answer the part of it.

2. The maxim of quality

According to Yule (1996:38) The importance of the maxim of quality

for cooperative interaction in English may be best measured by the number of

expression we use to indicate that we’re saying may not be totally accurate. For

example

- As far as I know, they are couple.

- He couldn’t live without her, I guess

(Yule 1996:38)

The sentence above is flouting maxim of quality, because the sentence

is not be totally accurate.

3. The maxim of relevance.

Cutting (2002;37) state that if speaker flout the maxim of relation, they expect

that the hearers will be able to imagine what the utterance did not say, and make the

connection between their utterance and the preceding one.

22
A: I say, did you hear about Mary's...
B: Yes, well, it rained nearly the whole time we were there.

(Cruse 2000:361)

This is an obviously irrelevant comment, assume that A and B are

having a conversation about a colleague, Mary. Mary approaches them, seen by

B but not by A, the implicature is: Watch out? Here comes Mary!

4. The maxim of manner

The function of this principle is to avoid ambiguity. Ambiguity here

means that it will lead the hearer to the contextual ambiguity (Cruse,

2000:357). The speaker has to speak briefly and orderly without reducing the

meaning of the speech. It will reduce unimportant speech.

A: I'll look after Samantha for you, don't worry. We'll have a lovely
time. Won't we, Sam?
B: Great, but if you don't mind, don't offer her any post-prandial

concoctions involving supercooled oxide of hydrogen. It usually gives

rise to convulsive nausea.

Cruse (2000 : 361)

The implicature arising from this unnecessary prolixity is obviously that

B does not want Samantha to know what she is saying.

23
Synopsis of beastly

Kyle Kingson (Alex Pettyfer) is the arrogant and vain son of wealthy and equally as

arrogant and vain news anchor Rob Kingston (Peter Krause). When he wins student

body president, he bullies the eccentric Kendra Hilferty (Mary-Kate Olsen) for being

ugly and strange at the after-party. Disgusted, Kendra magically transforms Kyle into

a bald, tattooed and scarred shell of his once-handsome self. Kendra says Kyle has until

the next spring to find someone who loves him or he stays this way forever. Rob takes

Kyle to live in a private condo with their maid, Zola (Lisa Gay Hamilton), and Kyle's

blind tutor, Will Fratalli (Neil Patrick Harris). Rob initially promises to support his son,

but gradually neglects his son over time and stops visiting him after work altogether.

Angry and hurt, Kyle finds sympathy from Will and Zola.

As spring draws closer, Kyle finds himself infatuated with Lindy Taylor (Vanessa

Hudgens), a girl from his former school who he had initially been as distant to as he

was to Kendra. When Lindy and her father are about to be mugged by two brothers on

the street, Lindy's father shoots one of the brothers, the surviving one vowing

vengeance by taking Lindy's life. Kyle saves Lindy and her father, and arranges for

Lindy to move in with him for her own safety. Initially, Lindy is furious about hiding,

since she was to go to Machu Picchu on a field trip - but after she claims she's seen

worse when Kyle reveals himself to her (now calling himself "Hunter" around her),

they warm up to each other. Kyle writes a letter to Lindy professing his love to her, but

he never plans to give it to her, in fear of Lindy not feeling the same way. Will and

24
Zola continue to help Kyle win her over, as the two begin to fall in love. In time, he

completely wins her over when they read Frank O'Hara's poem "Having a Coke with

You" together out loud. Closer to spring, Kyle makes a deal with Kendra that if he

succeeds in winning Lindy's heart, she will restore Will's vision and grant citizenship

to Zola's three children in Jamaica.

Lindy receives a text message from her father that the criminal who threatened her life

is in jail. She and Kyle spend an afternoon at one of Rob's private cottages on a lake.

As they are about to kiss, Lindy receives a call notifying her that her father overdosed

and is in a hospital. She leaves to see her father, and Kyle gives her his letter, but regrets

doing so when she tells him he's a good friend before leaving. Heartbroken, Kyle does

not answer Lindy's phone calls, after she reads his letter. Inspired by Will and Zola,

Kyle goes to meet Lindy one last time before she leaves for Machu Picchu, and explains

he did not answer her calls because he thought she only liked him as a friend. Lindy

professes her love, and departs for Machu Picchu. Kyle's normal, handsome self is

restored with Kendra's spell broken, but Lindy decides against leaving and tries to find

"Hunter" again. She initially ignores Kyle while searching for Hunter, only for Kyle's

phone to ring when she calls "Hunter". Realizing Hunter was Kyle, the two share a kiss

in the street.

Will wakes up one morning and to his delight can see again. Zola finds three green

cards for her children in the mail from the government. Kendra is also seen approaching

Rob Kingson's office as a new intern, implying that Kendra will likely do the same

25
thing to Rob as she did to Kyle. In the credits, a series of photographs show that Kyle

and Lindy went around the world together - including Machu Picchu.

Previous Study

The writer finds at least three students who had written pragmatics especially

in terms of Grice’s maxims of cooperative principles:

The first is the thesis by Djuuna (UNG, 2012) with the title is The Violation of

Maxim Cooperative principle in a Movie, The Last Voyage Narnia 3. This thesis

analyzed about flouting of cooperative principle. The objective of this research, is the

writer try to find out the types of maxim cooperative principle in the conversation in

the movie The Chronicles of Narnia : The voyage of the dawn treader. The writer also

describe the violation of maxim cooperative orinciple oprated in the movie The

Chronicles of Narnia : The voyage of the dawn treader.

The second is thesis by Daud (UNG, 2013) with the title is The Flouting of

Cooperative Principle on Andrew Niccols’s Movie “In Time”. This thesis analyzed

about flouting maxim in that can be found in “In Time” movie. The purpose of this

research to the scrube all of the flouting of cooperative principle which can be found

on Andrew Niccol’s Movie : In Time”. The writer try to classified every flouting

maxim that contained in that movie.

The third is thesis by Dewi Susanti Antuli (UNG 2014) with the title is The

Violation of Quantity and Relevance Maxim In Daniel Derret’s Comedy Novel

26
“Hamsters”. Thesis analyzed about Novel, this thesis is more specific. The writer just

analyzed two of maxim and she interpret the factor are leading the speakers violate the

quantity and relevance maxim in the text of novel hamsters.

Different from the previous writings, this study will be focus on movie

“Beastly”. Its aims to describe the flouting of cooperative principle, the writer also

elaborate the relationship between the characterization and the flouting of cooperative

principle in the Movie.

27
METHODOLOGY OF RESEARCH

Method

In this research, I used qualitative method. Qualitative method concerns to

the understanding of a phenomenon in which cannot be explained by numbers or some

counting and measuring things. This method is used to describe the data and requires

the sensibilities and perceptions of the researches to get the best result in this research

(Sandelowski, 2000).

Source of Data

In this research, the data used are called corpus. Corpus or corpora is a

spoken or written data collected by the researchers to analyze the use of language in

general (Heigham and Croker, 2009: 309). In this case, corpus can be utterances taken

from a conversation in movie. Therefore, my source of data is the beastly movie

subtitle, in which it provides the utterances which will be my corpus or my data.

Technique of Collecting Data

The following steps are the steps to collect data:

1. Watch the movie. In this step, the writer watch the movie with the English

subtitle to get the sense and the utterances. The writer watch the movie more

than once.

2. Identification. In this step, the writer identified the corpus which has maxim.

3. Note-taking. While the writer was watching the movie, the writer wrote down

the corpus that the writer have been identified before and the context when the

utterance was uttered.

28
Technique of Analyzing Data

In analyzing the data, I used these steps:

1. Identify the utterances which contain flouting cooperative principle

2. Classify or categorize the maxim

3. Analyze the data base on categorized of violation

4. Analyze and explained the answer based on research question

5. Make conclusion and find the pattern based on research question.

29
CHAPTER 4

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS

In this chapter, the writer analyses the flouting of cooperative principle from

“Beastly” movie by Daniel branz. The data which going to be analyzed are taken from

subtitle from that movie

4.1. Research findings

In this part, the writer explains the data that found in “Beastly” movie.

According to the problem statement that “What are the types of flouted maxim found

in “Beastly”?”. the writer found 4 utterances that contain the flouting maxim of

quantity, 5 utterances contain the flouting maxim of quality, 6 utterances contain the

flouting maxim of relevance, and 4 utterances contain fluting maxim of manner. these

are the classification :

Kinds of Maxim That Has Been Amount of Data

Flouting

Quantity 4

Quality 5

Relevance 6

Manner 4

30
From the table above. Writer can conclude that there are several flouting

maxim that contain in “Beastly” movie. Further, the writer will illustrated all

representative data to be discussed.

1. Maxim of Quantity

According to the dialogues below, writer explains some utterances that

violate maxim of quantity.

Datum 1

Context : this is the conversation between lindy and Kyle. He asking about
the treasurer position that Kyle give to lindy in elction before.
Kyle : Did I ever congratulate you on treasurer?
Lindy : Probably never apologized for my a holian election behavior
either. Well... two weeks ago was the first and last time you spoke to me in
three years. So, um... no

37
This is the conversation between Kyle and lindy. He is asking about

her position on treasurer by saying Kyle’“Did I ever congratulate you on

treasurer?” . Then lindy answers Kyle’s question by saying Probably

never apologized for my a holian election behavior either. Well... two weeks

ago was the first and last time you spoke to me in three years. So, um... no.

In this case, Lindy’s utterance flouting maxim of quantity. It is because

Lindy’s give her contribution more informative than is required. When she

said “Well... two weeks ago was the first and last time you spoke to me in

three years. It is flouting the maxim of quantity. Because the answer that

Kyle want just um... no.

Datum 2

Context: This conversation happens when Kyle sees Lindy become waitres
in his party. He sees that lindy takes the glass and he knows that
lindy is treasurer in student council.
Kyle : Got to slave here all night?
Lindy : Slaving all year
Kyle : Work-study?
Lindy : Yeah. I'm saving for the Machu Picchu trip.

In conversation above, Lindy’s utterance violate the maxim of

quantity because lindy answers Kyle’s question more than what Kyle want.

Kyle asks her “work-study?” and she answers that with “Yeah. I'm saving

for the Machu Picchu trip”. Actually lindy must answer Kyle’s question

with “yeah” she must not explain the purpose of earning money.

Nevertheless, it proves that he violate the maxim quantity As well as Cuting

38
(2002:37) said that the speaker who flouts the maxim of quantity seems to

give too little or too much information. Hence in the conversation above

lindy gives more information than what Kyle wants. The utterance that

flouting maxim of quantity is “I'm saving for the Machu Picchu trip”.

Datum 3

Context: It happens when Will and Kyle meet each other for the first time.
This situation is the first time people knock the door of Kyle house
after he gets Kendra curse.
Kyle : Who're you?
Will : Mary Poppins. The tutor. Uh, your dad hired me. I'm supposed to
move in today.

This is the conversation between Kyle and Will. Kyle asks about who knock

his door by saying “who’re you”?. Then Will answers Kyle’s question by saying

“Mary Poppins. The tutor. Uh, your dad hired me. I'm supposed to move in today.”. In

this case, Will attempts flouting maxim quantity because he gives more information

than what Kyle wants. a question from Kyle “who are you” supposes to have an answer

““Mary Poppins. The tutor.”.. He Doesn’t need to explain further purpose relates to

job. So, Will utterance “Uh, your dad hired me. I'm supposed to move in today.” is

flouting maxim quantity. He must not answer with that utterance in order he will not

flouting the maxim quantity. In this case, the information that he gives, more than what

Kyle ask, Thus, this datum proves that Will violates the maxim

39
Datum 4

Context: This conversation happens when hunter and lindy talk about Kyle.
It happens after lindy stays in hunter’s house during 1 month. And Lindy
does not realize that hunter is Kyle. Hunter makes that conversation in order
he can know how Lindy feel about him.
Hunter : So you did fall for him?
Lindy : No, I mean, I just talked to him, his last night
That is the conversation between Lindy and Hunter. In that

conversation, Lindy’s utterance violates maxims of quantity. She violates that

because she gives more information than that Kyle needs. Further she also says

something that not necessary. It is based on quantity maxim requires someone

to make the contribution as informative either it requires or not to make the

contribution more formative than it needs If she just asks “No” on what kyle

ask, she won’t violate the maxim of quantity. It is because all of kyle’s questions

just can be answered by “Yes, or No” without explain when they meet and when

they talk. So Lindy utterance “I mean, I just talked to him, his last night” is

flouting of maxim quantity

4.2.2 Maxim of Quality

According to the dialogues below, the writer explains some utterances

that violate the maxim of quality.

Datum 5

Contex : This conversation happens when Kyle tries to trap Kendra to go to

Kyle’s party with him. It aims to revenge what Kendra do to him before.
Kendra : What about your girlfriend?

40
Kyle : Deep-fried barbie doll e-dumped me last night.
Based on conversation above, Kyle utterances “Deep-fried barbie doll

e-dumped me last night.“, which violates the maxim of quality because it does

not give the truth contribution to What Kendra needs. Actually the purpose kyle

violates this maxim because he tries to trap Kendra. So he doesn’t tell the truth,

Kyle doesn’t broke with his girlfriend yet. according to Grice theory that the

rules of maxim quality is do not say what you believe to be false and do not say

that for which you lack adequate evidence, and Kyle’s utterance doesn’t tell the

truth. Thus the writer said that Kyle violates the maxim quality.

Datum 6
Context : This conversation happens when lindy meet Kyle in Kyle’s party.
She tries to ask Kyle to take a picture with him.
Lindy : Take a picture with me.
Kyle : What?
Lindy : School newspaper.
This conversation happens when lindy meets Kyle in Kyle’s party. She

tries to ask Kyle to take a picture with him. In this conversation, lindy’s

utterance that “School newspaper”, violate the maxim of quality. It is Known

that the rule of the maxim quality that the speaker must telling the truth. yet in

this case lindy is doesn’t tell the truth. Actually when Kyle asks to her, she must

answer for saving the picture for herself not for the school newspaper. The

reason why she’s not telling the truth in order Kyle want to take a picture with

her.

41
Datum 7

Context : The conversation below happens when rob brings Kyle in the new
house. It is because rob doesn’t want if people know that his child to be an ugly
man. He tries to lie to Kyle in order Kyle wants to stay in that place
Kyle : Where's your room?
Rob : It's right across the hall.

Rob’s utterance violates the maxim of quality. It is because rob doesn’t

life in right across. He lives in the place that so far. based on the theory of

maxim quality, the speaker must tell the truth In order the speaker can’t violate

the maxim quality. hence, it is concluded that this conversation violates the

maxim of quality because rob doesn’t tell the truth just try to make his son

happy with his utterance.

Datum 8

Context : This conversation happened when Will and Lindy meet each other
for the first time and she sees that in the table there is and wood and Will tries
to make a joke to Lindy with use Kyle’s property to build the green house.
Will : Uh, it's Hunter's thing. It's a structure on the roof.
Lindy : Structure for what?
Will : You ever see the 1954 Devil Girl from Mars flick, Where they abduct
virginal teenage girls for breeding stock?

In this conversation, Will’s utterance that “You ever see the 1954 Devil Girl

from Mars flick, Where they abduct virginal teenage girls for breeding

stock?” violates the maxim of quality. It is because he didn’t tell the truth. He

just try to make a joke to lindy with that sentence.

42
Datum 9

Context : This conversation happens when Lindy first time see Hunter’s face.
And lindy sees hunter is watching the Korean tv.
Lindy : You speak Korean?
Kyle/Hunter : Fluently

Kyle/Hunter utterance violates the maxim of quality by saying

“Fluently”. The writer concludes that he violates the maxim quality, because

he lies to Kendra about he can speak Korean with fluently. Yet the fact is he

doesn’t know how to speak Korean. He just want to make Kendra interested in

him. So he lies to Kendra. Actually, when lindy asks him that he can speak

Korean or not, he must tell that he cannot speak Korean because that’s the truth

therefore he will not violated the maxim

4.2.3 Maxim of Relevance

From the dialogue above the writer finds the utterance that violates the maxim

of relevance.

Datum 10

Context : This conversation happens when Kyle asks to Lindy what will he
do to take a picture for the school newspaper.
Kyle : What else'll I do with it?
Lindy ; I'm worthy of you.

Lindy violates the maxim of quantity because she replies Kyle’s question by

giving the irrelevant answer. Kyle asks, what will he do if he take a picture for

school newspaper and Lindy answers that question by saying “I'm worthy of

43
you”. Her answer is not relevant. She must tell what will Kyle do, not tell

about her feeling to Kyle. In the movie, this conversation happens when Kyle

is speaking to her, she doesn’t hear that. She just see Kyle’s face. And speak

what she think when Kyle ask the question for her.

Datum 11

Context : This conversation happens When Kyle talk to Kendra that Kendra
can’t go inside in his party without the ticket. This situation happens
because Kyle success to trap Kendra in order to make Kendra being shy.
Kyle : Sometimes they let you in just 'cause you're eye candy. She eye-candy?
Ticket Guard : Rules are she needs a ticket.

The Ticket Guard violates maxim relevance, because the ticket guard’s

answer is not relevant with what Kyle said. Actually he must answer that she

is beautiful or not. Yet he answers about people can go inside or no. thus this

statement is irrelevant with what Kyle said, and the ticket guard violates the

maxim of relevance. If he answer Kyle’s question that he is beautiful or not

probability he will not violate the maxim of relevance.

Datum 12

Context : The dialogue below happens when Kyle is so angry because his
father sends him in house that like a jail and send the blind teacher for
him.
Kyle : You know what? Obviously, he forgot to spin the borderline hostile act
of hiring a blind guy to tutor his creep show son. As for learning
calculus, I think I'll take a pass.
Will : Nice to meet you

44
Will violates the maxim of relevance because she replies Kyle’s

question by giving the irrelevant answer. If it’s pointing out Kyle’s question

that “You know what? Obviously, he forgot to spin the borderline hostile act

of hiring a blind guy to tutor his creep show son. As for learning calculus, I

think I'll take a pass” and Will just answer of what he ask with “nice to meet

you”. Actually, what Will respond about Kyle’s statement is very irrelevant.

Hence, the writer concludes that this conversation violates the maxim of

relevance

Datum 13

Context : This context happens when they talk each other and will says that
he goes to school, so Kyle surprised because his blind teacher ever
go to school .
Kyle : You went to regular school?
Will : At fifteen, my friends lost their virginity. I lost my sight.
Will violates this maxim because she does not give a relevant answer

to Kyle’s question. In the dialogue above, Kyle asks Will by saying “You went

to regular school?” it means Kyle just want to know if Will ever go to school

or no. in fact, will does not give the appropriate answer to Kyle. He replays

Kyle’s saying with “At fifteen, my friends lost their virginity. I lost my sight”.

This question is irrelevant with Kyle question’s.

Datum 14

Context: this conversation happens when they dinner, Will knows that last
night Kyle goes out with his motorcycle. And he wants to know where
the place that he will go
Will : So, I heard someone sneaking in late last night. Where'd you go?

45
Kyle : Isn't the benefit of having no parents that you have no parents?

Kyle violates this maxim because he does not give a relevant answer to Will’s

question. In the dialogue above, Will asks Kyle by saying “Where'd you go?” it means

that Will wants to know where Kyle go last night. In fact, Kyle does not give the

appropriate answers to Will. He replies Will by saying “Isn't the benefit of having no

parents that you have no parents?” this answer is irrelevant with Will’s question.

Datum 15
Context: This conversation happens when Kyle sees that Will plays dart. Even
though he was blind. Kyle was so surprised to see the blind man is playing dart
and he can throw it.
Kyle : How do you do that?
Will : I went to this dance and
some emo chick gave me a dart hex.

In this conversation, Will’s utterance flouted the maxim of relavance.

Point out on Kyle’s question when he surprised that Will can throw the dart,

Will’s answer is not relevant. Kyle ask him “how do you do that” If it correlates

to the context from this conversation, Kyle wonders how Will throw the dart

while Will was blind. But Will just answer with “I went to this dance and some

emo chick gave me a dart hex “ the answer is irrelevant with question which

addressed to him. meanwhile the rules of maxim of relevance that the speaker

must be relevant. Hence Will’s answer is violated maxim of relevance because

his answer is not relevant with Kyle’s question.

46
4.2.3 Maxim of Manner

Datum 16

Context : This conversation happens when Kyle try to ask Kendra to go to

his celebrating party and Kendra tries to remind Kyle must be
careful with her
Kendra : Besides, you know what they say about me, don't you??
Kyle : Vicious gossip

In this conversation Kyle flouted the maxim of manner. It is because Maxims

of manner suggest being clear. Based on to the dialogue, Kyle gives obscure idea when

he utters “Vicious gossip”. He does not reply Kendra’s question by a clear answer.

Prior to the conversation above Kendra asks to Kyle about what people say about her

does Kyle know or not. Yet Kyle’s just answer that with vicious gossip. Actually he

must tell what they talk about Kendra and does he know or not.

Datum 17

Context : This conversation happens when Kyle embarrass Kendra in front of

all people. And Kendra curse Kendra to be an ugly man.
Kendra : When the spring flowers bloom again, the year is up, And either the
words "I love you" will release you from the spell or stay like this
forever
Kyle : Like what?

According to the dialogue above Kendra’s utterance violates the maxim of

manner. It is because she doesn’t explain about what happened with Kyle. She

just explain how to make his face be normal again, but she doesn’t explain about

Kyle’s face. She just mention “like this” and it makes that utterance is not clear.

47
Datum 18

Context : This conversation happens when Kyle tries to make Kendra fall in
love to him with a poem. Yet Kyle was so surprised when Kendra know
the poem that Kyle give to her.
Lindy : I love "Having a Coke with You."
Kyle : Shoot me now

On conversation above, Kyle’s utterance violate the maxim of manner. Because

he doesn’t explain why he told “shoot me now”. Actually it’s not clear because

he doesn’t explain to Kendra that he was so surprised.

Datum 19
Context : This conversation happens when Lindy try to find hunter after she
said “I love you to hunter”.
Kyle : It's about a guy, good-looking on the outside, ugly on the inside. And
there's a curse. Love-Love changes him.
Lindy : Everyone know the story
Kyle : What if it wasn't a story? What if it were true?

In this conversation, Kyle’s utterance violate the maxim of manner because his

utterance is not clear. He explains to lindy about people that can change and

lindy doesn’t understand what Kyle is talking about. Actually if Kyle tells that

he is hunter that conversation will not violate the maxim. Yet, she explains

about the people that can change because someone tell “I love you” to him.

Discussion

From the analysis above the writer finds some utterances that contain

violated maxim. There are 19 violated maxims in “Beastly” movie. The writer

finds 4 utterances that contain the flouting maxim of quantity, 5 utterances

48
contain the flouting maxim of quality, 6 utterances contain the flouting maxim

of relevance, and 4 utterances contain fluting maxim of manner.

In flouted maxim quantity the writer finds 4 utterances. In Grice theory,

maxim quantity has 2 rules there are (i) Make you contribution as informative

as is required (for the current purposes of the exchange).(ii.) Make your

contribution as informative as is required. According to Cuting (2002:37), the

speaker who flouts the maxim of quantity seems to give too little or too much

information. From this example data including on violate the quantity maxim

as follows:

Kyle : Did I ever congratulate you on treasurer?

Lindy : Probably never apologized for my a holian election behavior
either. Well... two weeks ago was the first and last time you spoke to me in
three years. So, um... no
Contex: this conversation happens in the party. second meeting of Lindy
and Kyle. It happens after Kyle realize that lindy see he and his girlfriend
fight and Kyle try to shift the conversation.

In the data above, writer tries to correlate with Cuting (2002) said,

Lindy’s utterance flouted maxim quantity. It is because she gives much

information that Kyle want.

In flouted of maxim quality the writer finds 5 utterances. In the Grice

theory, there are 2 rules. They are (i) Do not say what you believe to be false

(ii).Do not say that for which you lack adequate evidence. Besides, According

to Yule (1996:38) The importance of the maxim of quality for cooperative

interaction in English may be best measured by the number of expression we

49
use to indicate that we’re saying may not be totally accurate. From this example,

data includes on violate the quality maxim as follows:

Kendra : What about your girl friend?

Kyle : Deep-fried Barbie doll e-dumped me last night.
Context : This conversation happens when Kyle try to trap Kendra to go to
Kyle’s party with him. it aims to revenge what Kendra do to him before.

Based on Grice theory about the maxim quality, Kyle’s utterance

flouting maxim quality because he doesn’t tell the truth. the reason he doesn’t

tell the truth or flouting that maxim because he tries to trap Kendra in order to

make Kendra wants to go with her.

In the maxim of relevance which obtains from the data are 6 utterances.

This is one of the example

Kyle : You know what? Obviously, he forgot to spin the borderline hostile act
of hiring a blind guy to tutor his creep show son. As for learning
calculus, I think I'll take a pass.
Will : Nice to meet you
Context : The dialogue above happens when Kyle is angry because his father
send him in house that like jail and send the blind teacher for him.

In maxim of relevance, Grice mentions (i) be relevant. According to Cutting

(2002;37) state that if speaker flout the maxim of relation, they expect that the hearers

will be able to imagine what the utterance did not say, and make the connection

between their utterance and the preceding one. In the data example above the writer

can assume that Will utterance flouting maxim of relevance because what kyle ask to

50
him is very not relevant with a what he say. And we know that Grice mention that Be

relevant.

In maxim of manner the writer finds 4 utterances. This is one of example of

utterance that contains in maxim of manner

Contex : This conversation happened when Kyle embarrass Kendra in front of

the all people. And Kendra curse Kyle to be an ugly man.
Kendra : When the spring flowers bloom again, the year is up, And either the
words "I love you" will release you from the spell or stay like this forever
Kyle : Like what?

In Grice theory about maxim of manner, Grice mentions (i)Avoid obscurity of

expression (ii.) Avoid ambiguity (iii) Be brief, and (iv) Be orderly. The function

of this maxim is to avoid ambiguity. Ambiguity here means that it will lead the

hearer to the contextual ambiguity (Cruse, 2000:357). The speaker has to speak

briefly and orderly without reducing the meaning of the speech. It will reduce

unimportant speech. On the example above, writer assumes that Kendra is

flouting that maxim of manner. It is because she doesn’t explain about what

happen with Kyle. She just explain how to make his face be normal again, but

she doesn’t explain about Kyle’s face. She just mention “like this” and it makes

that utterance is not clear. In fact, Kyle asks her back like what. then,

considering the previous theory from Grice that maxim of manner consist of

avoid obscurity of expression, therefore Kendra utterances flouting the maxim

51
Based on explanation above writer see that every character has a reason to flouting

some maxim. In maxim quantity, the character flouting the maxim because they try to

hide something. In maxim quality, the character flouting this maxim because they try

to trap someone, to make a joke, and to hide something. Further, character which is

flouting maxim relevance because they try to make a joke with someone. And the

reason why the character flouting the maxim of manner, the character try to hide

something from someone else.

52
CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

A. Conclusion

After analyzing types of flouting cooperative principle in “Beastly”

movie script, the writer would like to draw the conclusion as follow:

1. The maxims which are violated in the “Beastly” movie are maxim of

quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner.

2. The most maxim which are flouting in “Beastly” movie are maxim of

relevance with 7 utterances, maxim of quality with 5 utterances, maxim

of quantity with 4 utterances and maxim of manner with 4 utterances.

3. The reason why the character are flouting the maxim because hiding

something, to trap to someone, to make a joke, and many more.

B. Suggestions

Based on the explanation, it is a major concern to the writer gives some

suggestions as follow:

53
The writer suggests the readers, especially the student of English Department

to choose the flouting of cooperative principle as the object of research, because there

are many interesting aspects which can be analyze. Some people do not know how

important and crucial to learn violation of cooperative principle because people often

do it.
