How should you prepare this part of the reading?
You have to study questions and answers related to conversations between two people (usually friends).
The topics of these conversations are usually going to be about going out, hobbies, work, sports, trips,
going shopping, etc. Tienes que estudiar preguntas y respuestas relativas a conversaciones entre dos
personas (generalmente amigos. Los temas de estas conversaciones versarán sobre salir, aficiones,
deportes, viajes, ir de compras, etc.
You must first read the questions and try to imagine the situation they are describing asking yourself:
Where are they? Are they at a restaurant? at mome? Travelling? What are they talking about? What are
they planning to do? Debes primero leer las preguntas e intentar imaginarte la situación que están
describiendo preguntándote: ¿Dónde están? ¿En un restaurante? ¿En casa? ¿Viajando? ¿De qué
hablan? ¿Qué están pensando hacer? o ¿Qué hicieron?
For questions 16-20 it’s important that you understand the thread of the conversation by checking whether
the chosen answers make sense with the story being told. En las preguntas 16-20 es importante que
entiendas el hilo de la conversación comprobando que las respuestas que has escogido guardan sentido
con la historia que se está contando.

Let’s see an example:
Part 3
Questions 11-15
Complete the five conversations.
For questions 11-15, mark A, B or C on your answer sheet.

Example: 0

Answer:

0A BC

Note: “What do you do?” significa “¿A qué te dedicas?”, no significa “¿Qué haces?”. Por esta razón, la
respuesta correcta es “C“, ya que dice “Soy enfermera”. En este ejemplo de pregunta vemos claramente
que van a hablar de las circunstancias personales de cada uno, por eso, es importante recordar el
significado correcto de: What do you do?

MODAL VERBS
What are modal verbs?
Modal verbs are a type of auxiliary verbs that change “the mode” (that’s the origin of the word “modal”) of
other verbs. Los modal verbs son un tipo de verbos auxiliares que cambian “el modo” (ese es el origen de
la palabra “modal”) de otros verbos.
For example, if I say:
– I study English every day. Estudio inglés todos los días.
I can change the “mode” of the verb “to study” by placing a modal verb right before it. Puedo cambiar “el
modo” del verbo “estudiar” colocando un modal verb justo antes.”
– I MUST study English every day.
By adding, MUST to the verb “study”, I get a different meaning. In this case, I am indicating that “studying
English every day” is an obligation. Añadiendo, MUST al verbo “study”, consigo un significado diferente.
En este caso, estoy indicando que “estudiar inglés todos los días” es una obligación.
How many modal verbs are there?
There are about 10 modal verbs, but grammarians usually add other verbs to the list below because
they’re studied alongside with them. Hay alrededor de 10 modal verbs, pero los lingüistas, generalmente
añaden otros verbos a la lista de más abajo porque se estudian conjuntamente con estos.
1. Can– poder– Example: I can listen to music. Podemos escuchar música.
2. Could– pude, podría. Example: I could work hard. Pude/podría trabajar duro. Note: exact meaning will be
given by the context.
3. Might- puede que, quizás, a lo mejor. Example: She might do it. Puede que ella lo haga.
4. May– puede que. It may rain. Puede que llueva.
5. Will– to form the future tenses. Endings –rá- ré in Spanish. Example: I will go. Iré. Note: The negative
form of will is “will not”, but it’s usually expressed as “won’t”
6. Would– to form the conditional. Endings –ría in Spanish. Example: I would clean it. Yo lo limpiaría.
7. Must – debo. Example: I must work. Yo debo trabajar.
8. Should– debería- Example: You should try it. Tú lo deberías probar.
9. Shall- suggestion or invitation and future. Examples (suggestion/invitation): Shall we have a coffee? ¿Nos
tomamos un café? – (Future). They shall send a message. Ellos enviarán un mensaje.
10. Ought to– debería. Example: They ought to do their homework. Ellos deberían hacer sus deberes.
Nota: Para que puedas memorizar mejor la lista de modal verbs te dejo esta imagen.

What do these verbs have in common? ¿Qué tienen en común

estos verbos?
 They cannot be conjugated. In other words, you don’t add –s or –es for the third person, and they don’t
have a future or past version except insofar as some of them come in present form. For example, “can”
is in present while “could” is used in the past. No pueden ser conjugados. En otras palabras, no se
añade -s o -es para la tercera persona, no tienen una versión futura o pasada, exceptuando los casos
en que vienen en la forma presente. Por ejemplo, “can” es el presente, mientras que “could” se utiliza
para el pasado.
 They can’t be used as infinitives, participles, imperatives or, in some cases, subjunctives. No se
pueden utilizar como infinitivos, participios, imperativos, o en algunos caso, subjuntivo.
 They function as auxiliary verbs as they modify the meaning of the verbs placed next to
them. Funcionan como verbos auxiliares ya que modifican el significado de los verbos que se colocan
a su lado.
 It’s not possible to put two modals verbs together. Example: You can’t say: I will can. No es posible
poner dos modal verbs juntos. Ejemplo: No puedes decir: I will can.
Structure:
 Affirmative: Subject + modal verb+ main verb + object. Example: We can listen to music. Podemos
escuchar música.
 Negative: Subject + modal verb+ not + main verb + object. Example: I wouldn’t go there. Yo no iría
allí.
 Question: Modal verb+ subject + main verb + object? Example: Could they do it? ¿Podrían ellos
hacerlo?
 Negative question: Modal verb + not + subject + main verb + object? Example: Won’t they play?(*)
¿No jugarán ellos?
 Answers: Yes, + subject + modal verb- No, +subject+modal verb +not. Example: Yes, I can– No,
I can’t.
(*) Remember: “Will not” is the same as “won’t” which is more common.
IMPORTANT: Do not add “to” after any of the modal verbs, except in the case of “ought TO”. NO se debe
añadir TO después de ninguno de los modal verbs, exceptuando OUGHT TO.
Example: They SHOULD TO write an e-mail. They OUGHT TO write an e-mail.
When are modal verbs used? ¿Cuándo se usan los modal
verbs?
We usually use modal verbs when we want to express: Generalmente, utilizamos los modal verbs cuando
queremos expresar:
 Degrees of certainty/ Grados de certeza– It may be cold- Puede que haga frío.
 Ability/Habilidad– They can swim. Ellos pueden nadar.
 Possibility/Posibilidad– We might do it. A lo mejor lo hacemos.
 Permission/Permiso- Can I smoke? ¿Puedo fumar?
 Obligation/Obligación- I must work today. Debo trabajar hoy.

4) PRONUNCIATION
The letter “S” at the beginning of a word. La letra “S” al
principio de una palabra.
In Spanish there are no words that start with an “S”, there is always a vowel before the “S”. For example,
“especial”, “áspero”, “oscuro”. Therefore, when a Spanish speaking person starts to speak English, they
will usually add an “E” sound before the “S”. En español, no hay palabras que empiecen con “S” líquida,
siempre hay una vocal antes de la “S”. Por ejemplo, especial, áspero, oscuro. Por esta razón, cuando un
hispanoparlante empieza a hablar inglés, generalmente añadirá una “E” antes de la “S”.
Instead of saying “Spanish”, they will say “Espanish”. En lugar de decir “Spanish”, dirá “Espanish”.
But this mistake is very easy to fix. Pero este error es muy fácil de corregir. All you need to do is to repeat
many times words that start with “S” without saying “E” before the “S” until you get the sound right. Todo lo
que tienes que hacer es repetir muchas veces palabras que empiecen por “S” sin decir una “E” antes de la
“S” hasta que consigas decir el sonido correcto.
In this video you will see some examples of the pronunciation of the letter “S “at the beginning of some
words. En este vídeo verás algunos ejemplos de pronunciación de la letra S al principio de algunas
palabras. Please, repeat these words aloud until you learn the right pronunciation. Por favor, tepite estas
palabras en voz alta hasta que te aprendas la pronunciación correcta.
