Jargons in…

Basketball…

 Paint: the free throw lane.

 Reject: basketball game terms for motion to block a shot.


 Roster: view of the team players.
 Post: term for location either near the basket or foul line, but outside the free
throw lane.
 Scoop Shot: underhand shot made by a scooping motion advancing to the
basket.
 Swing Man: jargon for versatile player who can play 2 positions.
 T: abbreviation for time out or technical foul.
 Timeline: the line that divides the two halves of the court.

 Upset: the bigger, better team just lost to a supposedly second-rate team or
underdog.
 Weak Side: the area of the court where the ball is not; therefore, not much
action here.

Volleyball…

 Ace : A serve which lands in the opponent's court without being touched, or is
touched, but unable to be kept in play by one or more receiving team players.
 Cut / Cut shot : attack with an extreme

 Double contact / Double : A fault in which a player contacts the ball with two body
parts consecutively.
 Free ball / Chance ball : A ball that is passed over the net because an attack
wasn't possible.
 Goofy : When a player jumps with wrong foot first (while attacking)

 Kill : successful, legal, point-scoring play. It can be from a spike attack, tip or
dump.
 Mis-hit : A hit in which a player swings but does not contact the ball as intended,
giving it a different speed, direction, and spin than the player intended.
 Opposite : The player which plays in the rotation opposite the setter and usually
attacks from the right side.
 Pepper : A drill in which players hit a ball back and forth in a pass, set, spike,
pass, set, spike, etc. pattern, without a net
 Whiff - When a hitter swings for the ball and slightly grazes it with his middle
finger and ring finger.

Swimming…

 Aerobic Longer distance, moderate intensity, short rest period swimming sets that
focus on building endurance
 Anaerobic - Shorter distance, high intensity, long rest period swimming sets that
focus on building power
 Gala - Competition (also called a Meet)
 Grab Start - A type of Dive Start. Can also refer to starting from in the pool holding
onto the side
 Kickboard - A flat float used for doing kick
 Long Course - 50m pool (term used for describing competitions)
 Masters - Name used for our category of adult swimming at Meets
 Medley - All four strokes swum in a specified order

 Streamline - Underwater body position after diving or pushing off the wall which
maximises swim speed and efficiency
 Short Course - 25m pool (term used for describing competitions)

Boxing…
 Bout
A boxing contest, also called a 'match.' A bout consists of four two-minute
rounds, with a one-minute break between rounds.
 Hook
This is a short sideways power punch delivered by either hand with the elbow
bent. It's often used to knockout effect.
 Jab
This a quick punch thrown with the lead hand that does not have the boxer's full
weight behind it.
 Combination
This a series of punches thrown in sequence. For example a left jab, followed by
a straight right, followed by a left hook.
 Weigh in
This is the pre-bout ceremony where the contestants are weighed to make sure
they are within the limits for their division.
 Saved by the bell
This is when a boxer is being counted out and he is quite literally saved by the
ringing of the bell that marks the end of a round.
 Infighting
This is the parts of the bout where the boxers fight at close quarters to each other
so that blows using the full reach of the arm cannot be used.
 Throw in the towel
This is the traditional declaration of defeat in boxing.
 Second
The boxer’s assistant
 Clinch
This position occurs when one or both boxers hold the other in a way that hinders
the other's punches and their arms become entwined.
