English Texts in Action is an English course book for Secondary High School students.

This
book purposes at developing student’s literacy competence in English that is the discourse
competence. To master the competence well, students need to achieve the supporting
competences: linguistic, actional, sosiocultural and strategic competence.
The activities and materials developed in this book are designed to follow two teaching
cycles, spoken and written. The teaching learning cycle puts genres as the main tool in language
learning. So, each unit will discuss one main genre and the supporting ones. Each unit covers the
four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The listening and speaking skills are
mostly developed in spoken cycle while the reading and writing skills are mostly developed in
written cycle.
Each cycle involves four stages, Building Knowledge of the Field, Modeling of Text , Joint
Construction of Text, and Independent Construction of Text. In Building Knowledge of the Field,
students are encouraged to practice grammatical pattern related to the text type, and to build up
vocabulary related to the text type. Modeling of Text discusses the social functions, the schematic
structures and the language features in the targeted genre. In this stage, also, various texts in the
targeted genre are exposed to students so that they can learn more about the genre . The focus of
Joint Construction of Text is to give an opportunity to the students and teachers to work
collaboratively to construct certain text. The term collaborative writing has the meaning here.
Independent Construction of Text gives a chance to students to show their competence in
producing the targeted text, both orally or written, studied in the unit.
At the end of the courses students are expected to be able to get involved in
communication using English-such as carrying out interpersonal and transactional conversations;
reading, reviewing and writing various kinds of short functional texts; and accessing information
from various kinds of text types (monologs).
