1. Introduction

“Sabong” is an incredible window to the Filipino culture. Many Filipino men

are engaging in the “sabong” for fun, entertainment, leisure or for past time. There

are two types of cockfighting, the legal and illegal cockfighting. Legal cockfighting

is called derby, which is being performed in a big arena. While lllegal cockfighting

is called “tupada” which is being performed in barangays in an arena that is made

by bamboo and in square style only. “Tupada” can be legally operated and

permitted by the Local Government Unit during incoming barangay fiesta in a

particular barangay.

Cock fighting has been and still is a popular, traditional and customary form

of recreation and entertainment among Filipinos during the legal holidays, local

fiestas, agricultural, commercial and industrial fairs. Every year the big event for

the breeders is the world slasher cup and the gamefowl expo. It is the largest

gathering of the breeders every year. Gamefowl expo is the largest gathering of

gamefowl breeders, suppliers &enthusiasts in the world, featuring the best that the

industry has to offer. Featuring over the 11,000 square meters of exhibit space

with thousands of visitors in the three activity-packed days filled with raffle draws,

and seminar. This event is for selling the gamecock, brood stag, hen, pullet of the

popular in derby also these event give the breeders more knowledge in breeding.

One of the problems of the municipality of Gainza, Camarines Sur, the

research locale of this study, is its tourism. This project Bicol Cockpit Arena and

Gamefowl Trading Center will help the aforementioned municipality in terms of

their tourism.Having this project in this municipality will give the people of Gainza

employment. And most significantly, the municipality's identity to be known to its

remote places and even in other places that will eventually increase the tourism of

Gainza, Camarines Sur.

1.1 Background and Nature of the Study

A cockfight is a blood sport between two cocks, or gamecocks, held in a

ring called a cockpit. The history of raising fowl for fighting goes back 6,000 years.

The first documented use of the word gamecock, denoting use of the cock as to a

"game", a sport, pastime or entertainment, was recorded in 1634, The

combatants, referred to as gamecocks (not to be confused with game birds), are

specially bred and conditioned for increased stamina and strength. Male and

female chickens of such a breed are referred to as game fowl. Cocks possess

congenital aggression toward all males of the same species. Wagers are often

made on the outcome of the match. Two owners place their gamecock in the

cockpit. The cocks fight until ultimately one of them dies or is critically injured

The sport was popular in ancient times in India, China, Persia, and other

Eastern countries and was introduced into Ancient Greece in the time of

Themistocles (c. 524–460 BC). For a long time, the Romans affected to despise

this "Greek diversion", but they ended up adopting it so enthusiastically that the

agricultural writer Columella (1st century AD) complained that its devotees often

spent their whole patrimony in betting at the side of the pit. At first cockfighting was

partly a religious and partly a political institution at Athens; and was continued for

improving the seeds of valor in the minds of their youth, but was afterwards

perverted both there and in the other parts of Greece to a common pastime, without

any political or religious intention.

Cockfighting, locally termed Sabong, is a popular pastime in

the Philippines. In both types, knives or gaffs are used. There are two kinds of

knives used in Philippine cockfighting: single-edged blades (used in derbies) and

_____________________________________________________________________________________
Page | 2
double-edged blades; lengths of knives also vary. All knives are attached on the

left leg of the bird, but depending on agreement between owners, blades can be

attached on the right or even on both legs. The country has hosted several World

Slasher Cup derbies, held biannually at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Quezon

City, where the world's leading game fowl breeders gather. World Slasher Cup is

also known as the "Olympics of Cockfighting". The World Gamefowl Expo

2014 was held in the World Trade Center Metro Manila.

Cockfighting was already flourishing in pre-colonial Philippines, as recorded

by Antonio Pigafetta, the Italian diarist aboard Ferdinand Magellan’s 1521

expedition. Cockfighting in the Philippines is derived from the fact that it shares

elements of Indian and other Southeast Asian cultures, where the jungle fowl

(bankivoid) and Oriental type of chicken are endemic.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The population that want to enter the new kind of business, that is selling

a gamebird, increases. It is because in these business you can get a higher profit

when you have a highbred gamebird. And it is easily to sell if it is in good

condition, but the trend today is they sell their gamebird thru online selling.

Cockpit Arena don’t have a venue for that, for selling gamecock with different

breeds. The arena has no proper designated areas for the food concessionaire.

And also the lack of facilities that for the gamebird for resting and has no

separate area for the healing of wounded gamebird. Arenas contribute to noise

pollution to the environment, it is because some arena is located near in the

residential area. For a big event, like derby, there are some breeders that want to

come in an arena earlier for their gamecock to have enough rest before the fight.

_____________________________________________________________________________________
Page | 3
The arena doesn’t have facilities to offer them, to both breeders and gamebirds,

such a relaxing and convenient place for it.

1.3 Project Objective

The project aims to give a new dressing of Cockpit Arena that can offer more for

the breeders and for the community. A Cockpit arena that will provide new facilities

for the needs of breeders and for big event for derby as list below.

1. To propose a Cockpit Arena that having enough spaces for vendors and

facilities for gamecock.

2. To make an Arena that is properly designed for acoustic and for sound proofing

for the less noise pollution for the outside environment.

3. To provide a trade center that will give the breeder a venue for their gamecock

selling and other accessories for the gamefowl.

4. To propose a hotel and accommodation building for the breeders that is outside

from Camarinus Sur.

1.4 Significance of the Study

1. To the Community

The propose project will help the community to give a partial job and to help

the community to promote their place for the tourist or for the breeder that is outside

from Camarines Sur.

2. To the Environment

The project will give new dressing to the environment that can lessen the

noise pollution that provide Cock Arena.

3. To Local Government

To project will generate income that can contribute to the Local

governments economy.

4. To Local Breeders

The breeders will have a venue for them to sell there fighting cock and give

the breeder more knowledge about breeding and how to take proper the gamebird.

1.5 Scope and Delimitation

1.5.2 Delimitation

The project does not cover the plans in plumbing, electrical, and

mechanical. However, the project covers structural concept of the site for

further supporting feasibility study.

1.6 Criteria for Site Selection and SWOT Analysis

The site of the project must be able to provide the essentials of the users

as well as the projects need which can be helpful factor for design.it is the

descriptive assessment of the site and the process on how the chosen site

qualifies with the standard site description.

1.6.1 Site Criteria and Justification Process

The Site Justification is another way of examining the target site. Here,

the site criteria will be laid out together with the description of the proposed

site. Then, the data gathered from the proposed site will be used to check

if the site criteria will be satisfied.
