Lesson Idea Name: Addition and Subtraction Word Problems

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 1
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE1.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to,
taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using
objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.4

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson supports all students by:
Allowing collaboration with other students or individual participation.
Allowing students to use technology to stay engaged in the lesson
Students are read the questions or read them

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity, the class will be learning how to solve addition and subtraction word problems within
20. Students will do group activities, complete morning work activities, complete homework assignments, and
participate in centers to ensure students have been given applicable practice time throughout the week. On
the Friday at the end of the week, students will participate in a Kahoot! activity at the beginning of math time.
Prior to participating, the teacher will explain how the web-based tool works, and complete practice
problems with the class.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation

☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the SRT activity, students will be able to decide if they want to work in partners, groups of 4, or
individually. Students will login to the web-based tool and enter their names or chosen group name. Students
will answer the given questions on the computers, tablets, or mobile devices. The teacher will pace the
questions for the students. The activity will last roughly 10-15 minutes, containing 10 questions.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
Provided on URL

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
This keeps students engaged and participating as a game against other students. It also provides feedback to
the teacher if the students are understanding.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, the teacher will gauge what percent of the students answered correctly. If the students
did well on the activity, a test will be given to the students. If the students did not do well, extra time will be
spent on the lesson.

How will the data be used?

As explained above, this data will be used for the teacher to gauge how well the students understood the
lesson. As long as all the students participated (teacher monitored), the students will be given extra credit
points. If the students did well, a formal test will be given on the lesson. If the students did not do well, extra
time will be spent on the lesson.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I hope that this helps students stay excited for future lessons. If the students enjoy the activity, I will use
Kahoot! as a reward or game for free time. I also hope it helps students understand that learning is fun!

Reflective Practice:
I believe this activity could impact student learning by keeping students engaged in the lesson. I could extend
this lesson by having students complete it individually, rather than with partners or groups.
