1. Objective
This report presents the summary of emission estimation for tanks of which vent is routed to
atmosphere via canisters.
2. Scope
In this report, the emission estimation for following tanks are summarized:
3. Calculation Methodology
The calculation follows the emission estimation procedures from Chapter 7 of U.S. EPA’s
“Compilation of Air Pollutant Emission Factors (AP-42) for volatile organic chemical (VOC)
emissions from storage tanks”.
4. Calculation
4.1 Methanol Storage Tanks, FB-8721A/B
LT = LS + LW (1)
where:
LT; Total Loss
LS; Standing Storage Loss which refers to the loss of stock vapors as a result of tank
vapor space breathing
LW; Working Loss which refers to the loss of stock vapors as a result of tank filling
or emptying operations
LS = 365 x WV x VV x KE x KS (2)
where:
W V; Vapor Density
V V; Tank Vapor Space Volume
ED-87-PRS-CAL-0002 2019/3/14
When we assume either of two tanks is always filled with methanol at maximum
liquid level (100% level), the standing storage losses are as follows:
where:
M V; Vapor Molecular Weight
PVA; Vapor Pressure at Daily Average Liquid Surface Temperature
Q; Annual Net Throughput (tank capacity times annual turnover rate)
K N; Working Loss Turnover Factor
KP; Working Loss Product Factor
When we assume either of two tanks is always filled with methanol at maximum
liquid level (100% level), the working loss from each tank is as follows:
Thus, the total loss from the Methanol Storage Tanks is as follows:
ED-87-PRS-CAL-0002 2019/3/14
(1) Basic Equation for Vertical Internal Floating Roof Storage Tank
LT = LWD + LR + LF + LD (4)
where:
LT; Total Loss
LWD; Withdrawal Loss
LR; Rim Seal Loss
LF; Deck Fitting Loss
LD; Deck Seam Loss
(5)
where:
Q; Annual Net Throughput (tank capacity times annual turnover rate)
CS; Shell Clingage Factor
WL; Average Organic Liquid Density
D; Tank Diameter
ED-87-PRS-CAL-0002 2019/3/14
Thus, the withdrawal loss from internal floating roof storage tanks are calculated:
Q, bbl/year 562,578
CS, bbl/1000ft² 0.0015
WL, lb/gal 6.1
D, ft 65.6
NC, - 1 (typical for tank of which diameter ≤ 85 ft)
FC, ft 1 (assumed)
LWD, lb/year 75
where:
KRa; Zero Wind Speed Rim Seal Loss Factor
KRb; Wind Speed Dependent Rim Seal Loss Factor
v; Average Ambient Wind Speed at tank site
n; Seal-related Wind Speed Exponent
D; Tank Diameter
*
P; Vapor Pressure Function
M V; Average Vapor Molecular Weight
K C; Product Factor
n, - 0.3 (typical)
D, ft 65.6
P*, - 0.12
MV, lb/lb-mole 87.82
KC, - 1 (volatile organic liquids)
LF = FF x P* x MV x KC (7)
where:
FF; Total Deck Fitting Loss Factor
P*; Vapor Pressure Function
M V; Average Vapor Molecular Weight
K C; Product Factor
P*, - 0.12
MV, lb/lb-mole 87.82
KC, - 1 (volatile organic liquids)
LD = KD x SD x D² x P * x MV x KC (8)
where:
K D; Deck Seam Loss Per Unit Seam Length Factor
SD; Deck Seam Length Factor
D; Tank Diameter
P*; Vapor Pressure Function
M V; Average Vapor Molecular Weight
K C; Product Factor
D, ft 65.6
P*, - 0.12
MV, - 87.82
KC, - 1 (assumed)
LD, lb/year 0
ED-87-PRS-CAL-0002 2019/3/14
Thus, the total loss from the MTBE Storage Tanks is as follows:
LWD, lb/year 75
LR, lb/year 208
LF, lb/year 3683
LD, lb/year 0
LT, lb/year 3966
4. Conclusion
The design flow rate of vent gas to vent canisters for estimation of expected life of canisters are
summarized as follows:
Vent gas from Methanol Storage Tanks FB-8721A/B; 248 kg/day (Methanol 21.7 wt%)
Vent gas from MTBE Storage Tanks FB-8722A/B; 3,284 kg/day (MTBE 1,500 ppmw)
