Islam vs Muslim
Nearly one quarter of the world’s population follows the religion that was revealed to the Prophet
Mohammed and subsequently transcribed into the Quran. Despite its number of faithful followers
that have now settled across the globe, many Westerners don’t have a clear idea of what this
religion entails. Subsequently, even incredibly fundamental questions, such as the difference
between Islam and Muslim, arise as these same Westerners are beginning to explore their
increasingly globalized world. Beyond linguistic distinctions, there are actually very few
differences between Islam and Muslim.
Definition of Islam and Muslim
Islam : the meaning comes from the Arabic verbal noun (like a gerund) slm. When
appropriate vowel markers are added the word Islam appears. The etymology of slm is to
submit, accept, or surrender. From this comes Islam’s conventional definition of surrender to
God.
Muslim : also has its roots in the slm verb. It is a participle of the verb and refers to a
person who engages in the act of submission, acceptance, or surrender. Therefore a Muslim
is a person who submits to the will of God, or a follower of Islam.
Uses of Islam and Muslim
Islam is generally used in conversation to denote the religion or community of believes as a
whole. For instance: ‘The Islamic community in town will be celebrating Eid next week.’ It is
also used when talking about the religion as a noun unto itself. For instance: ‘Islam is based
on the sayings of the Prophet Mohammed that have been written down in the Quran.’
Muslim is generally used in conversation to qualify or distinguish a person. For instance,
‘Remember the Muslim man who works at the bank?’ It can also be used as a simple
description of one’s religious beliefs. For instance: ‘He is Christian but she is Muslim.’
Because Muslims are a minority community in many countries and most of the West,
describing someone as Muslim may also reflect on their lifestyle and choice of dress in
addition to their religious beliefs.
Misuses of Islam and Muslim
Islam : grammatically speaking, Islam should only refer to the religion or acts done in the
name of that religion, never a person who practices that religion. Islamic community and
Islamic art are correct, Islamic man is not.
Muslim should be used to describe all people of the Islamic faith but not the faith itself. You
may say that you are interested in the religion of Muslims, but never in the Muslim religion.
Summary:
1.Islam and Muslim are both words used to describe the religion revealed to the Prophet
Mohammed.
2.Islam and Muslim both have the same origin in the Arabic verb slm.
3.Islam is the act of submitting to the will of God whereas a Muslim is person who participates in
the act of submission.
4.To be correctly used, Islam or Islamic should describe the religion and its subsequent cultural
concepts whereas Muslim should only describe the followers of the religion of Islam.

Is it okay to call a community ‘Muslim?’ I read in your piece that it’s a word reserved for
individuals, but since a community is made up of individuals, doesn’t that make saying,
“Muslim community” okay?
I’ve grown to hate the word, ‘Islamic,’ because of the way the ignorant racists are using it.
Unless in the same paragraph as say, the ‘Christian Faith,’ I can’t see any reason to refer to
Islam as, ‘the Islamic Faith.’ I prefer to call Islam, “Islam.”
And btw, while we’re on racists’ corrupted use of the English language, wtf is an ‘Islamist?”
Do we call Christians, “Christianists?”
It’d be nice if you’d address that particular word.

Unfortunately it has come down to Islam being directly tied to fear of terrorism. I hear
most “Islamic extremists”. I am not a Muslim, but I know truths about who and what
terrorists are actually called, terrorists… That’s it. Its a religious propaganda war with
Christianity and Islam, dumb sort of being that the concept of morality are so similar.

I would compare Islam and Christian extremist are similar in dedication they are
not open to being reasonable. And I know if your religious you should be 100%
or don’t basically be a hypocrite. But when the misuse of these religions to
suppress or control their people or families is wrong. brain washing is easy to
because most of these people looking for answers and are very committed to
follow. And so its easy to accept denouncing other when they don’t agree with
them.

What people do not understand about religion, any religion, is that
there are various types of people who ‘practice’ that religion. That
means there are good people and bad (sinners) poeple who do not
practice the religous tenets of that religion. The net result is like we
have in this day of the Islamic terrorists. These people do not follow
the principles or defined practices of the Islamic faith as Muslims.
They are sinners.
That the Islamic faith has these people to contend with in the 20th &
21st centuury reflects what the Muslims had to put up with when
‘Christian’ Knights defiles the holy lands back whenever and
occuring many times. Both lots are terrorists.

Like it or not, both religions of Christianity and Muslims, worship the
same God. That is the God of Abram as he was first know as, or
Abraham as we know it today. God Almighty is the one God both
religions follow. It is how each person chooses to follow that religion
that makes the diference, not the religion, despite all the Allah
Akbahs, or “In the Name of God” etc., etc., screammed out at or
during an act of terrorism. How each person follows their religion of
the ‘One True God’, that will determine their life on earth and the life
to come.

Christ), and God the Holy Ghost, and these three are one (I John 5:7)

Allah and God are titles of the supreme God Almighty. They are not

Every Bible including The several Christian Bibles I have read are
bits and pieces determined be sects of that religion deciding what
goes into there own particular beliefs and teachings, while others get
omited. The Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith’s are all bery similar
coming from the same time in the past and having very similar
ideologies. Perhaps research of all areas in these areas might help to
open beneficial dialogue .

First, someone please explain how Islam or Muslim became a race and not
a religion. All this talk about anti Muslim and anti Islamic racism is by
people who have extreme guilt feelings about Racism. My guess is they’re
mostly descendants from old slave owners. Or from Nazi’s or other such
past groups so they compensate bt calling everything racist. Like Chicken
Noodle, your a white racist, Like Chicken Fried, your a white racist, there’s
no escaping their cycloptic view of a racist world.
Secondly, Did I see posted, both Religions were “Revealed by Allah” ?
Allah Who? Long before anyone said Allah, they prayed to “Wahweh”. So
Allah didn’t exactly reveal Gods name half a millennium after he was

Apparently Gavin, as well as the great majority of the world, is
misinformed. Typically this results from (noncritical) investigation into
origins. But when one believes the status quo, the ‘pat answer’ which
is given to the question re: are they the same ‘God?’, why would
anybody question such?
The truth is actually that Muslims and Christians do not
worship/love/serve the same ‘God.’ In fact, ‘Allah’ (which is not a
name, but rather a title, meaning ‘the god’) has its roots in preIslamic
Arabian polytheism. In my investigation, I’ve all but concluded that
‘Allah’ is the (former) moon god of the South Arabians, which likely
was worshiped as Ilumqah\Almaqah of the Sabeans (Yemenis). It’s
interesting to note how the symbol commonly associated with Islam is
the crescent moon. This is why we see such atop the mosques. Also,
the star accompanying the crescent moon represents Venus. While
some revisionists (no names mentioned at this time) have attempted
to depict the chief Arabian dieties as a sun god, the truth is that the
vast majority of Arabians venerated the moon as superior.
When considering this fact of ‘Allah’ being a moon god, one would
have to question the origins of their holy book. It’s well attested that
Muhammad actually thought he was possessed during his call as a
prophet. It took some time to convince himself (wrongly, I add) that it
was the angel Gabriel who had appeared to him in the cave at Mt.
Hira, even though it was actually a demon strangling him, three
times, and telling him to ‘Recite!’ But Muhammad could not, as he
was illiterate.
The only way in which Islam may be perceived as an ‘Abrahamic
faith’ (if we may use that term?) is by way of the fact that Ishmael was
fathered by Abraham. Muslims believe that Muhammad was a
descendant of Ishmael. But believing that Muhammad was a prophet
of ‘God’ comes only by way of perceiving that Adam, Enoch,
Abraham, David..even Jesus Christ himself..were all Muslims (i.e., of
the true ‘faith’); therefore, Muhammad, being the last ‘prophet, in a
long line of other prophets, was (in their understanding) the prophet
of ‘God.’
God revealed himself as Elohiym (the strong God) in the very
beginning. This is a plural form of a singular noun, indicating the
plural aspect of Persons (personalities). From this we derive the
Triune nature of God (or, the Trinity, as the Godhead is often referred
to as). Islam, being a purely monotheistic religion, does not give
deference to the concept of God being triune. Hence, we have the
commonly uttered statement ‘Allah had no son.’ This is true, because
Allah is not God. God does have a Son, and his name is Jesus
Christ…
And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth
all men every where to repent:
Because he (God) hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge
the world in righteousness by that man (Jesus) whom he hath
ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he
hath raised him from the dead. (Acts 17:3031)
Jesus Christ was crucified (something which, again, is contrary to
Muslim belief); he was actually made sin for us (see II Corinthians
5:21), just as the serpent on the pole symbolised when Moses and
the children of Israel were in the wilderness after the Exodus from
Egypt. It was the love of God for a sinful race (the human race) that
motivated him to send his Son Jesus Christ (anointed Saviour) to lift
us out of the mire of filth, and to cleanse us by his word and his Spirit.
This includes Muslims, Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus…whatever your
religious stripe is. No other religion has the concept of a suffering
Saviour (Isaiah 53). It was necessary for Jesus to suffer, however, so
that he might bear the judgment of God on our behalf.
And to prove that Jesus had power over death, he rose from it
(death). He was crucified, buried, and resurrected.
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that
Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was
buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the
scriptures:
(I Corinthians 15:34)
These three events will all befall us: death, burial and resurrection. I
pray God that you will ALL be counted worthy to be in the FIRST
resurrection, which is unto life! Call upon Jesus, who alone is able to
save to the uttermost.

wasn’t something dictated by anyone of the west – islam and muslims should address

Much evil has been done by individuals or society in the name of
Christianity. However, they are not exhorted to this by the teachings
of the Bible. They have done this outside of those teachings.
Nowhere in the Bible is there anything comparable to the “verse of
the sword”, which officially instructs Muslims to kill or subjugate all
nonMuslims. Today we do not see followers of any other faith
committing murder and mayhem in the name of their religion and
certainly not with the blessings of that religion! By contrast, Islam
teaches that by killing lots of people (for no reason other than that
they are not of the Muslim faith or have left that faith) the killer will be
rewarded in heaven. This is in no way comparable to Christianity. For
whatever flaws other religions may have, compulsion is exclusively
an Islamic teaching.

I agree with you as a muslim. They are not following islam, do you see how
strong the bond between other countries are yet the bonds between muslim
countries have grown apart, they are not followers of religion by saying to no to
the thousands of refugees. You want to know who is fighting the war against isil
facetoface? People in such dire states that if they were unarmed they would be
refugees in a crisis, and yet to my amazement the muslim world doesn’t care

Well put John Doe. I’m reading about “Muslim”, “Islam”, etc mainly because I’m
trying to figure out who the fuck to think are idiots, related or connected to
terrorism, covering their women, their view of women, etc. The only conclusion
that I’ve had is that it all seems to originate in the middle east, and most of them
seem to be Muslim ? However it seems like the beliefs of Muslim by definition
doesn’t seem to be half as messed up as the the beliefs, attitudes, opinions of
that culture. Again, I’m unclear on where that’s coming from, but unless I’m
misunderstanding what you’re saying, they need to make the adjustments,
distinction, separate the good, bad, correct, hypocrites, etc ? I agree if that’s
what you’re saying ?

masses. The Prophet Mohammed was a debauch rapist who proposed that
every Muslim man who lived by his philosophy would enter the afterlife with a
permanent erection and 72 virgins. This is why these idiots have no fear of

As an exMuslim who now has no communication with most of my family (or childhood
friends)… I am AMAZED when I speak with people (mostly white western people
straight out of university) who defend Islam in the name of ‘tolerance’ and
‘compassion’.
Let me tell you this. The people you are defending have NO compassion for you (or
anyone else who is not Muslim or apostatizes). They use these people and play the
victim so they can setup their beliefs and laws in the western countries. Someone has
to tell you people. No one understands what is happening. Behind closed doors, many
Muslim families laugh at how easy is it to bring their culture into the western nations.
Simply move to a country and have 78 children, raise them in a Muslim area with
strict faith in the Quran and tell them to have more children. With western birth rates
below 2 (per family), Islam will have Sharia law and majority within 5 generations.
If you actually read the Quran, it teaches nothing but the conquest and spread of Islam
and the violent destruction of those who are not Allah’s chosen. Worse than the
Christian old testament. Muslims are waiting for the right time to strike at the remaining
nonMuslim cultures.
I refuse to be a part of this religion because they treat us women like animals. I had no
say in what I wanted to do in life and my life was already planned for me by the time I
was 16. HOW IS THAT A LIFE?? Only the men benefit from Islam. That’s all I will say

Regarding the Bible Old Testament – it was written solely to the Jews (proof is
Romans 2:1415) as they rejected Jesus. The OT lays down the law that is now
written on everyone’s heart. The Jews to this day are still looking forward to
another god. So the Biblical OT had a purpose. Read Romans 3:20. Animal
sacrifice saved no one, but the answer lies in 2 Corinthians 5:21. Now that you
are no longer a Muslim, please consider Bible study. Read Genesis & then go to
the New Testament to find saving truth.

Do you have to live in fear of your life since you broke away from the Muslim
religion? Is there a target on your back as the result of taking on western
women’s rights? Or are you disowned and shunned by your friends and family
but left to be on your own? Lastly why do Muslim women try to get Western
women drawn into their beliefs when Muslim women are regarded as property to
abuse and forced into almost a type of slavery. I personally could never sit back

Interesting comment Akilah, I’m trying to figure out who is what, where the
messed up beliefs come from, or who to direct my opposition ? The Muslim
religion by definition doesn’t seem to share the beliefs about terrorism, women,
which is what bothers me. While I believe a man and a woman’s role in family
may be different, they’re equally important, and their treatment, opinions, etc
should be as well. Requiring a woman to cover, conceal the beauty created
(unless by personal choice) is controlling, degrading, belittling. Terrorism, or any

The definition of the muslim religion that i read and yours aren’t the same. It didn’t say
anything about anything close to terrorism of any kind, or encouraging it. However,
that’s what I’m trying to figure out, who’s to blame for that messed up, backwards

media, government, and ignorant citizens forget that our country was built on the principle of
” Separation of Church and State”, yet readily includes innocent members of the Muslim
community and the Islamic religion as a whole as suspects or a threat whenever there is a
mass shooting or terror attack commuted by one. When was the last time the Catholics
were all suspect when some drunk Irish guy unloaded his AK at the pub?
I’m glad that I can educate myself and try to understand other human beings who have
different beliefs than me instead of labeling them and grouping them into a certain group of
enemy, or threat.

A city here in Iowa is home to the oldest Mother Mosque in North America. It has
been here since the 1920s. It is therefore funny (strange) the number of people
that have said how evil the Muslim community is, because they have lived and
worked in Cedar Rapids for almost a century, starting businesses, working for
others and being an integral part of our city. I have worked for them and with
them with never anything negative being said or done by either the Muslims or
Christians. Just recently, an Islamic man had his home smeared with graffiti and
his Christian neighbors helped clean up the mess. In the floods of 2008 the
Muslim community joined their Christian neighbors in helping clean up the mess
and volunteered with coffee and sandwiches for the emergency people that were
going around in boats saving people. We have not had terrorists running around
in our city, we have not had anyone trying to shove their religion (or terrorism)
down our throats. We practice tolerance here–and the Golden Rule!

sunnis versus sheites(sp?).
then indeed their quran does prech for them to kill or enslave all infidels (meaning

two questions about the Qur’an. Is it true that in the Qur’an says that all other religions must
be eliminated? My parents told me that it did say that I would like someone who read the

there is plenty of information available about the true nature of islam. while it is true
that there are many good people who consider themselves to be muslim. but they can
only be good people by choosing to ignore a great deal of the teachings of islam. the
quran itself really does say to kill or enslave anyone who is not a muslim. it also says
to deceive the nonmuslims in order to be able to establish islam.
If you are open to learning more about islam I highly recommend these videos (below).
I hope that anyone who is wondering about islam will watch at least some of these
videos. people need to become informed. islam is a very real problem. There is
nothing peaceful about islam.
The quran does not deserve the protections that are accorded to other religions
because the quran actually meets the definition of hate speech. and hate speech has
never been deserving of tolerance or freedom of expression.
I used to think that islam could be tolerated just like all of the other religions, but then I
learned the true nature of islam and came to understand that it is a political ideology
that very aggressively seeks to dominate the entire world and is willing to do this by
any means, including violence.
By the way, the version of the crusades that they teach us in school is very distorted
(at least in the usa). what they did not teach is that the muslims were intent on
invading the whole of europe and very nearly succeeded — they got as far as france.
it was the crusades that finally succeeded in driving them back to the middle east.
What I was never taught in school and only learned recently is that the spanish moors,
where actually just a different name for the muslims who invaded and conquered
spain.

Your reference to the archangel Michael to be Jesus is a stretch Angels are not
human. Meaning, they were not created in God’s image. God’s only begotten Son was
Jesus Christ, in His image as a human without the stain of original sin. And from the
Jewish faith came Christianity steaped in Jewish scriptures. To Alexander, those whom
followed Christ stemming from His chosen Apostles preached not of the the prophet
Jesus, but from Jesus Christ. Through faith alone, people, who have been so named
as Christians, believe in the Trinity; Father, Son, & The Holy Spirit as One, the alpha
and the omega, the beginning and the end.
Now, Solder(soldier) of god(God), I do believe you are on the right path when you say,
if I may paraphrase here, “we must all stop fighting about which religious faith is the
correct one and work together as one human race to destroy all that is evil.” Mankind
has taken it upon itself to define us all into different names of those who follow the
same God. Christianity, Islam and Hinduism are the world’s three largest faiths if we
speak of total numbers of followers. Each speaks of peace, love, and faith in one true
God. Wouldn’t it be great if all faiths worked together to trample beneath our feet those
who commit to killing(murdering) others in the name of God. It is time to protect all
lives from distruction. Will this happen in our lifetime? God only knows. Until then, my
fellow humans of faith we must stop the killings of any life through our alliances.

There is a different between Muslim extremist and extremist Islam. those who say Islam is
not a religion they are wrong. there is a thin line between religion and ideology. Christians
and Muslims should not engage in a debate on who is right or wrong but instead they should
try to combat in a dialogue that will both benefit their societies; try to solve the epidemics of

Islam is name of religion, revealed by the same God who sent the previous prophets and
messengers like Moses, Jesus. God says in Quran, all messengers were sent by Me to
humankind for their guidance, yet humans either rejected them or killed them, because they
did not like the message from God. Those who reject God’s message, reject God and have
no hope in hereafter.
Jesus and Moses preached exactly the same morality like the Last and Final Messenger of
God Muhammad peace be upon them all.
Quran says very clearly – Say, we do not discriminate between any of the messengers or
prophets, all of them were from God and we believe in all of them and respect all of them.
But humans, being of selfish nature divided themselves into groups and sects and called
themselves Jews, gentiles, Christians, nasiris etc. The Quran clearly guides – “Say, your
forefather Abraham who believe in One God was neither a Jew nor a Christian, he believed
and submitted to One true God and was a Muslim, so whoever wants success in hereafter
follow the Last Prophet Muhammad whose book Quran cannot be played with anymore by
humans, for I have taken the responsibility of protecting My Word of final testament given to
Muhammad, My final Messenger before World ends.
Muslim – one who follows Islam.

How do you know Abraham was Muslim ? He believed in Jesus Christ which means
he was Christian. (Not saying Jesus is God). You seem to know a little more than I do
about Islam, muslim ? Maybe you can tell me what if any group, religion, whatever
would think that anything beyond a negative opinion (that would probably be
considered judgmental) followed with any action directed at them other than not
associating with them, such as aggression, violence, etc would be acceptable,
tolerated by God, any God ? I’m not implying you’re one way or the other, just
wondering if you know ?

Just a little correction… The Quran is actually purely the words of God and not the sayings
of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be
upon him) are found in Hadith.

I believe in one god whether u call him Allah or Jehovah or just god as well as most other
religions the belief of one god Isalm Christian it’s really do similar god says fo not judge he’s

Some Muslims purposely deceive Christians. Example= I previous worked with a Finnish
Muslim woman who often seemed very nice. She would always tell people that she was not
political and didn’t follow any religions. I asked her these questions and got the same
answers. She was beautiful and had a seemingly pleasant personality. I found out a year
later that she was indeed a Muslim and that she condidered herself to be a democratic
socialist.I always liked her as a person, but I still wonder why she hid all of this from me and
the other people she worked with.

I think it helps to know that the Quran makes a distinction between “Muslim” and Mumin
(believer).
Muslims submit, consciously or subconsciously.
Mumins believe. They’re what ‘the faithful’ (folks who are often laughed it because it all
seems absurd).
Apparently, in the Quran, Abraham went from just plain submitting (Muslim) to Believer
(Mumin). That’s the desirable journey!
