8. S8000 SITE CHARACTERISTICS

The S8000 can be installed on three types of sites:
− Terraces of buildings,
− Indoor premises, if air exchange is provided in the premises (minimum air
exchange with outdoor : 1250 m3/hour per BTS),
− Ground level (sidewalk, soil).

8.1. S8000 OUTDOOR INSTALLATION PRINCIPLES

Each S8000 cabinet and outdoor battery cabinet can be installed on a plinth (type 1
or type 2) serving as mounting and connection template or, if the site allows it, the
cabinet can be installed on ‘I’ beams.
For S8000 outdoor EP3 or EP4:
The S8000 EP3 and EP4 is secured on the plinth (type 1 or type 2) using 4 bolts (see
Appendix 3 and Appendix 4). It is normally secured by the sides or by the rear and
the front sides of the cabinet:
Side securing : Rear and front securing :

Front Front

Notes: - On S8000 EP3 and EP4, the front securing screw accessibility is more difficult,
thus their usage is not advised,

- If one of the cabinet corner is not accessible for securing the screws, the
cabinet can be secured by the 3 other corners, in this condition, the loosed corner
must not be exposed to the storm conditions,

- In any case at least 4 anchorage points are required.

8.2. EQUIPMENT PACKAGING

The S8000 cabinet is fully assembled in conventional delivery conditions.
The outdoor battery cabinet and its battery units are shipped separately.
For sites with difficult access, the BTS cabinet is ordered and delivered in the
depopulated configuration. The modules that have to be inserted in the cabinet on
site are delivered in specific protective packaging.
This confidential document is the property of NORTEL NETWORKS and should not be copied or circulated without permission.

GSM BTS S8020 Site Specification

Method 06-9104 of 15/10/2004 Page 22
8.3. SITE ACCESS
Once a site has been selected, access conditions must be evaluated to determine
whether the cabinet will be delivered populated (easy-access site) or depopulated
(difficult-access site).

8.3.1. EASY-ACCESS SITE CHARACTERISTICS

The site access conditions allow the mechanical handling of a populated cabinet
throughout the distance separating the delivery point from the mounting location.
The accessibility is correct for the position of a truck of 104 Kg ( 22 000 lb).
No manual carrying is required to set the populated cabinet onto its mounting
location.
The mechanical means used to carry and/or hoist the fully populated cabinet (e.g.
dolly system, elevator, scaffold, crane, boom truck, helicopter...) must be qualified to
bear the fully populated cabinet weight (about 450 Kg/ 992 lb) in compliance with
standard security requirements.

8.3.2. DIFFICULT-ACCESS SITE CHARACTERISTICS

For this type of site mechanical means cannot cover the entire delivery truck -
mounting location distance; part of the way (as small as it can be) requires manual
carrying.
As a consequence, the cabinet must be delivered depopulated to reduce its weight
and height.
Even though the cabinet can be carried manually, the maximum use of mechanical
means is encouraged to enhance the safety and security of both staff and equipment.

8.4. CABINET HANDLING

Otherwise specified the term ‘the cabinet’, in this chapter, refers to both BTS cabinet
and outdoor battery cabinet.
Transportation is carried out by a special purpose truck equipped with a deck.
The depopulated cabinet can be carried by 4 persons.

8.4.1. LIFTING
The populated S8000 cabinet must be handled with mechanical devices (the
cabinet may only be guided manually during lift-off or during final positioning,
provided that basic safety rules are observed by the personnel).
All other handling methods must be specified and validated if required by the
project.
The cabinets are hoisted by a lifting vehicle suited to the cabinet weight and to the
site characteristics (height, jib), and equipped with an hoisting kit:
- Ref A0796524 for S8000 EP3 and EP4

This confidential document is the property of NORTEL NETWORKS and should not be copied or circulated without permission.

GSM BTS S8020 Site Specification

Method 06-9104 of 15/10/2004 Page 23
Note: The kit ref. A0796524 is mandatory for hoisting purpose. All other hoisting kit
must not be used for S8000 EP3 and EP4. It could damage the mechanical part
of the cabinet and / or crush the DACS.

Since the lifting vehicle hoisting operation is designed to position the cabinet directly
on its mounting support, the lifting vehicle access conditions are extremely
important, and obviously, the mounting support must have been installed beforehand.
In case of hoisting in exterior with a jib crane, the parameters to take into account
are:
- Floor mechanical resistance.
- Height of the building.
- Width of the building.
- Width of the street.
- Width of pavements / sidewalks.
- Natural obstacles.
- Safety requirements for the hoisting operation.

8.4.2. HORIZONTAL MOVING

A standard forklift/dolly is used to move the cabinet, secured to its wooden pallet.
The cabinet must be paced as closed as possible to its final location. Then, the
cabinet (fully populated) can be slided onto the plinth by 4 workers.
The path should be clear of obstacle (chimney, gravel’s, cableway, conduits...).
In case of flat roof, the driving path must be prepared to avoid damages to
original supporting surfaces, in terms of terrace floor mechanical resistance and
waterproofing.

8.4.3. UNLOADING WITH THE DEPOPULATED CABINET

The maximum distance between the truck and the building entrance is 10m (33 ft).
Truck parking duration: plan on 4 hours.
The access way to reach the building entrance from the truck should respect the
following minimum dimensions:
Height: 2 m (6.6 ft),
Width: 1.10 m (3.6 ft).
Access within the building
The building must be accessible during working hours, and the keys must be
available on the site.
The important dimensions are:
Door access: Height: 2 m (6.6 ft)

handling and personnel simultaneously.
Staircase: Width: 1.35 m (4.4 ft)
Spiral staircase: Width: 1.15 m (3.8 ft)
Minimal interior diameter: 1.40 m (4.6 ft)

8.5. FLOOR CHARACTERISTICS

8.5.1. RESISTANCE
Outdoor BTS cabinet:
In accordance with the cabinet and plinth weights, the minimum floor resistance
must therefore be: 600 kg/m2, 123 lb./ft².
Outdoor Battery cabinet:
In accordance with the outdoor battery cabinet and plinth weights, the minimum
floor resistance must therefore be: 800 kg/m², 164 lb./ft².
For both cabinets, a load-spreading structure must be studied in compliance
with the maximum floor resistance allowed by the supporting surface, and the
type of mounting interface chosen to install the cabinets (plinths, I-Beams,
customer frame ...).

8.5.2. FLATNESS
The S8000 Outdoor must be installed on a level floor surface.
The maximum tolerance is 5mm over 2m (~ 0.2’’ over 78’’). In other words, the
vertical tolerance shall not exceed 5mm over a 2m horizontal length.
If the BTS pad does not respect this max. tolerance, the cabinet once installed may
be ‘twisted’ and cabinet watertightness along the front doors shall not be guaranteed.

This confidential document is the property of NORTEL NETWORKS and should not be copied or circulated without permission.

Method 06-9104 of 15/10/2004 Page 25
The check of the level floor is achieved with magnetic level including a protractor
vial or wedge. The three axis must be checked; depth, width and diagonal.

8.6. SITE DIMENSIONING RULES

Each site may be constituted from 1 up to 3 BTS cabinets plus one optional outdoor
battery cabinet for each BTS cabinet.
The criteria governing the size of the site are:
- The cabinet dimension and the distance constraint,
- Relative positions of cabinets,
- Input constraint of coaxial cables in the cabinet,
- Cabinets orientation in exterior site, with respect to exposure to winds / sun and
possible nuisance caused to the neighborhood (noise).

8.6.1. DISTANCE CONSTRAINT

Minimum distance Comments
Rear clearance: 20 cm 7.9" For the installation / removal of the
rear outer skin, and for tent set-up *.
Front clearance to open the door and for the
BTS cabinet: 130 cm 51.5" technician access.
Battery cabinet: 140 cm 55.5"
Space on either side: 20 cm 7.9" For adjustment of the door hinges.

- To adjust the door hinges,
- To allow tent set-up,
- To remove or install lateral panels,
- To use lateral securing,
In all cases, a space of 10 mm must be available to open the door of cabinets one
by one or 20 mm if you want to open the doors of each cabinet in the same time
(see following figures)
Need of 10 mm gap minimum for opening one door.
10,00 mm

Need of 20 mm gap minimum for opening the two doors in the same time
20,00 mm

8.6.2. INPUT CONSTRAINT OF COAXIAL CABLES

The position of the antenna feeders must respect the bending radius of the cable
and of the antenna jumpers.
The antenna feeders terminate outside the plinth.

8.6.3. CABINETS ORIENTATION

The cabinet must be placed so that following rules are respected (if possible):
- Heat dissipation is optimized by placing the BTS cabinet back facing south for
northern-hemisphere countries (the BTS cabinet back should face north for
southern-hemisphere countries).
- Rain falls effects are limited by placing the cabinet parallel to the direction of
dominant winds.

This confidential document is the property of NORTEL NETWORKS and should not be copied or circulated without permission.

GSM BTS S8020 Site Specification

Method 06-9104 of 15/10/2004 Page 27
- In case of a high-wind area (typhoon...), the cabinet should be placed in a protected
zone.
The local weather conditions must be taken into account to determine the priority
between the rules above.
Possible nuisance caused to the neighborhood must also be taken into account
(noise...).

8.6.4. SITE LAYOUTS WITHOUT PLINTH

The cabinets can be installed on an I-beams structure; this structure must be able to
support the cabinet weights and respect the securing holes positioning.
Two opposite sides of the cabinet must be secured to the structure with two fasteners
for each side. The two opposite sides may be the right and left ones (usual case), or
the front and rear ones.
The structure which is used to support the cabinet must be designed to provide a
cabling space under the cabinet. The minimal height of this space is:
- 15 cm / 6’’ (17.6 cm / 7’’ from the bulkhead plates)
This dimension is a minimum requirement; it can be enlarged if coaxial cables due to
be connected to the BTS present high minimum bending radius.
The supporting structure must be designed so that the contact zone between the
cabinet and the structure present a width of at least:
- 6 cm / 2.5’’
This width must be applied to the front and back contact zones, and possibly to the
sides of the cabinet (if they are supported by the structure).
See drawing next page.

8.6.5. SITE LAYOUT USING PLINTH
Two opposite sides of the cabinet must be secured to the plinth (type1 or 2) with two
fasteners for each side. The two opposite sides may be the right and left ones (usual
case), or the front and rear ones.
For NO Seismic zone:
The site layouts shown reflect the case of cabinets set on plinths.
For a bi and tri-cabinet site, the roof mechanical resistance will impact on the layout
selection.
Other site configurations may be chosen as long as they respect the equipment
requirements (clearances, cable paths, max. inter-cabinet distance...).
For Seismic zone:
Each anchor must be accessible after a seismic activity for the purpose of re-torquing
to specification. For this reason, the 20 cm clearance along the cabinet sides where
the anchors are located is crucial.
A 75 cm / 30’’ space must also be kept between the cabinet backs in case of back to
back installation.

9. SITE PREPARATION
This section describes the preparatory work which must be carried out on the site
prior to BTS S8020 installation.

9.1. PREPARING THE FLOOR

9.1.1. CLEAN SURFACE

The clean surface is the minimum surface required to install the cabinet and allowing
for the different field technicians to move along the cabinet when installing or
servicing it.
The clean surface required for each layout is described in the given sample layouts
(see previous pages).

9.1.2. ANCHORING THE MOUNTING PLINTH

Holes are drilled in the floor using the S8000 drill template or the floor prints given
in appendix, then the plinth is dropped in its final location, and anchored to the floor.
The plinth must be grounded to the cabinet copper braid delivered secured under the
cabinet (the plinth is provided with a tinned copper grounding bar).

- Grounding cable from AC box distribution or others.
This earth plate is installed close to the cable entry of the BTS base cabinets:
- On the terrace,
- In the cable trench.
It is continuously linked to the earth electrode of site.
The maximum impedance of the earth electrode measured from the earth plate must
be less than 10 Ohms.

9.3. LIGHTNING PROTECTION

The entire site must be protected against direct lightning strikes.
The site must be equipped with a lightning conductor on top.
For lightening protection it is important that the radio lines from the antenna to the
cabinet are regularly grounded.
The antenna ports of the cabinet can be protected with a ¼-wave surge arrestor
(optional).
The cabinet also includes a surge arrestor for induced current surge on the AC Main
power supply.

9.4. ANTENNAE
The customer must foresee and install the antennae and the feeders. The antennae are
installed in compliance with the radio engineering studies by trained staff.
For S8000 BTS the diversity is mandatory for the reception.

9.5. CUSTOMER AC BOX

For a site with several cabinets, one protected power supply branch is required for
each equipment installed on the site.
The customer AC box is not provided by Nortel. The location of the customer AC
box must take into account the length of the cables connected to the BTS (max
16 m / 17.5 yd for the cables provided with the ancillaries kit).
The customer AC box must contain an appropriate disconnect device, easily
accessible by the service personnel and marked as the disconnect device for the
equipment.
The customer AC box must be dimensioned according to the connected systems
characteristics.
The insulated earth conductor for the product must be green/yellow.

9.5.1. BTS CUSTOMER AC BOX CHARACTERISTICS

The customer AC box feeding BTS cabinets must be dimensioned to feed fully
equipped BTS cabinets in operational conditions and worst case configuration

(cooling / heating on, battery loading, all DRX broadcasting, ac input voltage
variation).

Notes: In operational condition we don’t take account of max. current drawn on

convenience outlets (power sockets), because we use them only when a
technician is on site for intervention.

During the start-up of the climatic system, the current drawn by the BTS may be
higher for a short period of time. This is why the site breaker must be time
delayed.

A differential device is not mandatory for our cabinets. If the breaker has such a
differential device, it has to be rated at 500 mA minimum, delayed type (type S).

The power distribution system must be of TT or TN-S type. Refer to

national installation grounding requirement for details.

The Main site circuit breaker must choosed in compliance with all the existing
equipment of the site.
A differential device is not mandatory at all for our cabinets. If the breaker has such
a differential device, it has to be rated at 500 mA (min) delayed (type S).

The closest standard circuit breaker dimension is 40 A (min) (45A if you want to
consider the use on the power socket) .
The characteristics of the recommended circuit breaker, dedicated to each cabinet,
are:
40 A (min), bipolar, C curve, where C curve means the breaker trips at 600 A in
approx. 10 ms (electro-magnetic action), and at 100 A in approx. 10 s (thermal
action).
• Three phases 220-240Vac
The label on the BTS door indicates 24 A max. per phase, 220-240 Vac, 50 Hz.
The global current requirement in operational conditions and worst case
configuration for the S8000 Outdoor cabinet will not exceed 23 A in steady state on
phase 1.
The closest standard circuit breaker dimension is 30 A (min).
The characteristics of the recommended circuit breaker, dedicated to each cabinet,
are:
32 A (min), tetrapolar, C curve, where C curve means the breaker trips at 550 A
in approx. 10 ms (electro-magnetic action), and at 80 A in approx. 10 s (thermal
action).
• Three phases bi-cabinet configuration
For main site circuit breaker, higher rated breaker may be used for multi cabinets.
Another way suggested to power 2 BTS cabinets is the phase permutation.
In the three phase cabinet:
The Phase 1 supplies the AC/DC rectifier bank.
The Phase 2 supplies the power socket (10 Amps protection).
The Phase 3 supplies the DACS.
Phase permutation:
A time-delayed 3 x 35 A power distribution can be used to power both cabinets,
provided that the phases 1 and 2 are crossed for the extension cabinet:

9.6.2. SYSTEM EXTERNAL CABLES
The external cables arriving to the cabinets on a S8000 site are provide in an
ancillaries kit (see [A3]) (Not applicable for US market).
These cables are available next to the plinth, are mechanically protected inside
metallic tubes or in metallic cables trays. In both cases the metallic cable protection
must be grounded to the earth plate interface.
All external cables on-site must be approved for outdoor use (in terms of resistance
to humidity, heat, UV rays...), and must be flexible.
For PCM cable: the symmetrical pair will be screened. The screen or the outer
conductor of the coaxial cable shall be connected to the earth at the output port of the
BTS and provision shall be made for connecting the screen to earth at the input port
if required.

9.6.3. RADIO CABLES TYPES

The antenna feeders arrive as close as possible to the BTS cabinet mounting location,
the interconnection between the feeders and jumpers is done outside of the plinth (if
used).
The number of feeders depends on the combiner type (H4D, H2D, Dp, Dp + Tx
filter) and on the number of sectors.
The feeder interconnections shall comply with outdoor constraints (waterproofing...).
The feeders shall be grounded with dedicated grounding kits.
The radio feeders are coming from the antenna mast; they must be protected at the
ground level by a metallic cable tray (to avoid damage possibly caused by ice blocks
falling from the top of the mast).
9.6.3.1. Peculiarities of RF links

The jumper connector to plug into the BTS radio bulkhead must be straight, Male,
DIN 7/16, and equipped with a watertight gasket.
