ABSTRACT

The Title is Teaching Procedure Text By using Explicit Instruction Method

This research was designed to explain about how to teach procedure text by using
explicit instruction method in junior high school. Starting from ask some students to
do something then show to their friends to explain the steps. After the students got the
poin from the explanation of the materials, the teacher will give something to students
and order them to make a step depand on the explanation that teacher gave before.
They will make the step from the concret thing then they also practice it directly. This
method is give a high significant effect to increase the student understanding of
procedural text and also more attract student’s attent then just explain procedure text
only.

PREFACE

Thanks to Allah the Lord of the world. We prayed to You, Because of His grace
blessings we can complete a research entitled “Teaching

Procedure Text Using Explicit Instruction Method” in a timely manner.

The research is structed to meet the task subject of Micro Teaching. Also as a
condition for getting a good grade in this course.

In the preparation of this research we involve stakeholder, namely:

1. Mr. Samsi Rijal M. Pd, as a lecturer of Micro Teaching that has guide us in the
preparation of this research.

We would like to thank him who has helped us in every way, so that the research
can be resolved. May allah reward all his kindness. Amin.

We realize that this research is far from perfect, therefor criticism and suggestion
from the stakeholder that is built for the perfection we always hope this research.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

English is the most commonly used language among foreign language speakers.
Throughout the world, when people from different nationalities want to communicate,
they commonly use English language. That is why we like to call it “the language of
communication”. Moreover, speaking English will enable you to contact people from
all over the world and to travel more easily.

In order to get the communicative competence, the students need to learn four
language skills namely listening, reading, speaking and writing.
One of the subject in writing skill is procedure text. There are some explanation
in this material and sometime of students fill bored and difficult to get the poin of this
material. Thats why the researcher using explicit instruction method to attract
student’s attention and make them easier to understand about procedure text.

According to Arends (in Trianto, 2009: 41) "explicit instruction learning

model is a learning approach specifically designed to support student learning
processes related to declarative knowledge and well-structured procedural knowledge
that can be taught in a step-by-step pattern". According to Kardi (In Huda, 2013:186),
can be in the form of “Lectures, demostrations, training or practice, and group work”.

The main purpose of the use of the model is to maximize the use of student
learning time, while the impact of teaching is completing academic content and skills,
increasing student’s motivation and ability.

1.3 PURPOSE OF STUDY

DISCUSSION

1 Procedure Text
A procedure text is a text that is designed to describe how something is
achieved through a sequence of actions or steps. It explains how people perform
different processes in a sequence of steps. This text uses simple present tense, often
imperative sentences. It also uses the temporal conjunction such as first, second, then,
next, finally, etc.

The generic structures of procedure text are :

 Goal/aim ( or title)
 Materials (not required for all procedural texts)
 Steps (the actions that must be taken)

Language Features of Procedure Text

In the Procedure Text, we use

 SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE. And:

 Use of imperatives (e.g.: cut, don’t mix)
 Use of action verbs (e.g.: turn, put, mix)
 Use of connectives (e.g. : first, then, finally, …)
 Use of adverbial phrases (e.g. : for five minutes, 2 centimeters from the top)

Generic Structure of Procedure

1. Goal : It is containt the purpose of the text. (e.g : How to make spagheti)
2. Material or Ingredient : it is containt of the materials that used in the process.
(e.g : the material to cook omelette are egg, onion, vegetable oil, etc)
3. Step : it is containt of the steps to make something in the goal. (e.g : first, wash
the tomatoes, onion, ...., second cut the onions becomes slice. . . )

6
Purpose of a Procedure Text

An anticipated outcome that is intended or that guides your planned actions. A

particular course of action intended to achieve a result. Or To help us do a task or
make something. They can be a set of instructions or directions.

1.4 Explicit Instruction

Explicit instruction is based on research studies relating to effective teaching

practices. This research aimed to identify educational interventions that were the most
effective in supporting the learning of students with learning disabilities (LDs) in the
core subjects of reading, writing and mathematics. Explicit instruction involves using
highly structured and sequenced steps to teach a specific skill. With this approach, the
educator intentionally aims to teach students with LDs using a series of actions in
three main stages: preparing for the lesson, interacting with students over the course
of the lesson, consolidating the lesson taught (Gauthier, Bissonnette & Richard,
2013).

It is important that educators take the time to prepare their lessons in advance. During
this stage, they should reflect on the anticipated learning outcomes, on the educational
activities to be performed, in the execution of the various stages, on the required
materials, on the estimated time required for each step, and how the anticipated
learning outcomes will be evaluated. Ultimately, the teacher must specify the learning
objectives they will pursue with their students with LDs: that which drives planning
activities in reverse (Tomlinson & McTighe, 2010), which consists of determining:
the anticipated results, what constitutes as evidence of learning and educational
activities. It is thus apparent that the explicit determination of learning outcomes and
evidence of learning in advance will help to facilitate the learning of students with
LDs.

Over the course of the lesson, the implementation of explicit instruction, when
planning for educational activities should be adopted: the educator demonstrates to
students with LDs what they must do (modeling the practice); then guides students
through a group activity (guided or directed practice) so that students have the

7
necessary skills to complete the task, and then the students practice the task
independently (autonomous practice).

Syntax of Explicit Instruction Learning Model

 Delivering goals and preparing students.

 Demonstrate knowledge and skills

 Guiding training

 Check understanding and provide feedback.

 Provide opportunities for advanced training and application.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

2 Conclusion

Learn about procedure text is very easy to understanding if the teacher using
a method and not only explain about it. Using expilicit instruction method is help
the teacher easier to explain the procedure text. This method also give chance to
the students to practice directly then just listen about the explanation of procedure
text. The students also able to make the step directly with the concret thing that
teacher serve for student’s exercise. Because more practice is easier so this
method is suitable use in teach procedure text.

3 Suggestion

During this paper the writer found many difficulties. Therefore the
suggestion from the reader is very needed by the writer to prepare this paper. The
reader do not find this material only in this paper but the reader have to find other
refferences. Because this paper is not perfect, so if you find mistake from this
paper you have to tell the writer
