2. A four cylinder two stroke petrol engine, 75mm bore by 90mm stroke,
operates on the constant volume cycle and has a compression ratio 6:1,the
efficiency ratio being 55%. Calculate the thermal efficiency. When it runs at
40 RPS it develops a bmep of 360 kpa and uses 9.2 kg of fuel per hour of CV
44000 kJ/kg. calculate the brake thermal efficiency ,the mechanical efficiency
and the indicated specific fuel consumption in kg/kWh.
3. Enumerate the various engine efficiencies, explain?
4. The power of six cylinder four stroke engine direct injection oil engine is
absorbed by a water brake for which B.P= W N/20,000, where W is brake
load in newton and N is speed in rpm. The air consumption was measured by
an air box sharp edged orifice systems. The bore is 95mm, stroke 120mm,
speed 2400 rpm, orifice diameter 30mm, orifice coefficient of discharge 0.6,
C/H ratio by mass in fuel 83/17, brake load 550 N, fuel density 00.831 kg/m3.
Calculate BMEP, torque,BSFC and volumetric efficiency. Assume any
missing suitably?

1. Compare the differentiate among the fan, blower and compressor?
2. Draw the T-S diagram for the multi stage compression and show the work
saving during the compression in comparison with single stage reciprocating
air compression?
3. Explain how intercooling reduce work input to the compressor?
4. Derive an expression for the optimums inter cooling pressure for two stages
reciprocating air compressors with perfect inter cooling?
5. Derive an expression for work done when compression is isothermal for a
single stage reciprocating air compressor?
6. A single stage double reciprocating air compressor is driven by a 39 KW
electric motor with a transmission efficiency of 95%. Air is drawn in at 0.98
bar and 288 k and compressed according to the law pv1.2 =c to 5.8 bar. The
compressor runs at 100 rpm with a piston speed of 151.15 m/s.

1. Explain the working principle of Roots blower with suitable diagram?
2. What is positive displacement compressor? Explain the working principle of
vanes sealed compressor?
3. A rotary air compressor working between 1 bar and 2.5 bar has internal and
external diameters of impeller as 300 mm and 600mm respectively. The vane
angle at inlet and outlet are 300C and 450C respectively. If the air enters the
impeller at 15 m/s. find (a). speed of impeller
(b).work done by the compressor per kg of air.
4.A centrifugal air compressor having isentropic efficiency of 70% receive air at
170C.if the outer diameter of the blade tip is 1m. and the compressor runs at
5000 rpm find;
(i). the temperature rise of the air
(ii). The static pressure ratio.

5.Define the term slip factor and power input factor with respect to the centrifugal
compressor. Explain them.
6. draw inlet and outlet velocity triangles of an axial flow compressors?
7. An axial flow compressor compresses air from an inlet conditions of 1 bar and
290 k to a delivery pressure of 5 bar with an overall isentropic efficiency of 87 %.
The degree of reaction is 0.5 and the blade angles at inlet and outlet are 44 0 and 130
respectively. The mean blade speed and axial velocity are constant throughout the
compressor. Assuming the blade velocity of 180 m/s and workdone factor 0.85.
calculate the number of stages?
