an expression for its air standard efficiency?
5. Derive an expression for the efficiency of a dual cycle?
6. An air standard cycle has compression ratio of 15 and cut-off ratio of 2 inlet
pressure and temperature are 150 kpa and 350 k. determine heat added per Kg.
7. Calculate the % loss in the ideal efficiency of a diesel engine with
compression ratio 12, if the fuel cutoff is delayed from 6% to 10%?
UNIT -2

5. Differentiate between magneto ignition system with battery coil ignition
system?
6. What are the various components to be lubricated in an engine?
7. Explain the principle of Wankel engine?
UNIT – 4
1. What is the significance of stroke to bore ratio on I.C engine performance?
Explain?
2. A four cylinder two stroke petrol engine, 75mm bore by 90mm stroke,
operates on the constant volume cycle and has a compression ratio 6:1,the
efficiency ratio being 55%. Calculate the thermal efficiency. When it runs at
40 RPS it develops a bmep of 360 kpa and uses 9.2 kg of fuel per hour of CV
44000 kJ/kg. calculate the brake thermal efficiency ,the mechanical efficiency
and the indicated specific fuel consumption in kg/kWh.
3. Enumerate the various engine efficiencies, explain?
4. The power of six cylinder four stroke engine direct injection oil engine is
absorbed by a water brake for which B.P= W N/20,000, where W is brake
load in newton and N is speed in rpm. The air consumption was measured by
an air box sharp edged orifice systems. The bore is 95mm, stroke 120mm,
speed 2400 rpm, orifice diameter 30mm, orifice coefficient of discharge 0.6,
C/H ratio by mass in fuel 83/17, brake load 550 N, fuel density 00.831 kg/m3.
Calculate BMEP, torque,BSFC and volumetric efficiency. Assume any
missing suitably?
5. Explain the significance of the following tests,
(i). motoring test
(ii). Morse test
(iii). Retardation test.
UNIT – 6
1. Explain the working principle of Roots blower with suitable diagram?
2. What is positive displacement compressor? Explain the working principle of
vanes sealed compressor?
3. A rotary air compressor working between 1 bar and 2.5 bar has internal and
external diameters of impeller as 300 mm and 600mm respectively. The vane
angle at inlet and outlet are 300C and 450C respectively. If the air enters the
impeller at 15 m/s. find (a). speed of impeller
(b).work done by the compressor per kg of air.
4.A centrifugal air compressor having isentropic efficiency of 70% receive air at
170C.if the outer diameter of the blade tip is 1m. and the compressor runs at
5000 rpm find;
(i). the temperature rise of the air
(ii). The static pressure ratio.
