Question 1

What are the competencies, traits and drivers of a leader of


the digital age?

Digital leadership can be defined by a leader’s contribution to transition


toward a knowledge society and their knowledge of technology. Digital
leaders have an obligation to keep up with the ongoing global revolution.
Today’s leaders must have the ability to identify technological trends
across different sectors, such as big data, cloud computing, automation
and robotics. They must possess sufficient knowledge and the vision to
use the resources most effectively. Leaders should know their limits and
know how to acquire missing knowledge.

A leader of the digital age must have the following competencies:

(i) Cultivate innovation & Thought - Understanding the business,


making complex decisions, create new and different idea, method or
device and better ways for the business and organization to move
forward to be successful.

(ii) Manage ambiguity - the leader can effectively cope with changes
even when things are not certain or the way forwards in not clear or
uncertain.

(iii) Strategic vision - the leader can see ahead to future possibilities,
ideas for the direction and activities of business development and can
translate them into breakthrough strategies.

(iv) Engage and inspire - building collaborative relationships, optimizing


diverse talent, influencing people and create a climate in which people
are motivated to do their best to help the organization achieve its
objectives.
(v) Drive results - a leader must be able to drive results in the
organization to achieve results even under tough circumstances.
(vi) Self—being authentic, open, and flexible and adaptable

The traits of a leader of the digital age are:

(i) Curiosity - is a desire to learn and a desire to know. A leader must


know how tackle problems in a novel way, see patterns in complex
information and pursue deep understanding.

(ii) Risk taking - leader must be willing to take a stand, or take changes
based on limited information or lack of uncertainty or a fear of failure.

(iii) Adaptability - leader must be comfortable with unanticipated


changes of direction or approach and must be flexible , steering change
and responding to change.

(iv) Tolerance of ambiguity - comfortable with uncertain vague or


contradictory information that prevents a clear understanding or
direction.

(v) Confidence - a leader must be able to make spontaneous decisions


without having doubts and believe that they can influence positive
outcomes.

(vi) Cultural dexterity—combining cultural knowledge, emotional


intelligence, and interpersonal skills to achieve results in any cross-
cultural context

(vii) Learning agility— a leader must have ability to apply past lessons
to new and first-time situations

(viii) Emotional intelligence—reading and relating to others. Ability to


understand and manage own emotions, and those of the people around
The drivers of a leader of the digital age are:

(i) Independence - prefer an entrepreneurial approach which is focused


on developing, implementing and monetizing innovative ideas and
limited organizational constrains.

(ii) Structure - a leader must be able reshape the workplace, work force
and the work by asymmetric, unstructured organization structure and
working environments.

(iii) Challenge - a leader must be able to face challenges coming from


internal and external environment. Motivated by achievement in the face
of tough obstacles.

(iv) Power - a leader must feel motivated to seek influence, recognition


and increasing levels of responsibility.

What are the outputs and outcomes of a leadership


development programme (ie. Nurturing Next CEO
Programme/Training)?

Outputs

1. Increase productivity
The right and consistent leadership programme can increase the
productivity of the organization. Leaders should understand the
employees emotionally. Programme such as emotional intelligence
involves being smart about emotions and using empathy to empower
and engage employees in managing people.

2. Retain and increase employee engagement in workplace


By investing in leadership training, organization can retain people and
reduce costly recruitment expenses. Through leadership training,
employees were given opportunities to give feedback which will
motivate and increase their engagement in workplace.

3. Communicating with Purpose


Leaders need to communicate effectively, their employees stay
informed, participate, and add value. Leading for Performance:
Communicating with Purpose helps organizations gain competitive
advantage when leaders can communicate more effectively with their
people, their peers, and their customers.

4. Leading in Challenging Times


Leadership training help to focuses on what happens to human energy
during times of change. To capture the discretionary energy of the
workforce, leaders must understand how motivation and focus can be
lost, and what they and their teams can do to regain effectiveness
and commitment.
Outcomes

1. Increase leadership competencies among the leaders


Leadership training can result in better decision making among
managers. Leaders with high emotional intelligence have the
perspective to make informed, intelligent business decisions.

2. An effective leadership style


Leadership training can assist in implementing the most appropriate
leadership style for the organization. Leadership training also can
help managers to develop their own leadership style that their team
members will best respond to.

3. Self Awareness
A leadership training assist a leader to understand his/her own
personality and motivations, recognition of strengths/weaknesses and
the need to improve in particular area, awareness of others
perceptions of oneself.

4. Reflective thinking
Reflecting on events, their outcomes, and what can be learned form
them ; being more analytical and thoughtful in one’s decisions ;
thinking through possible outcomes of future actions.

5. Planning and organizing


A leadership training assist leader to learn setting goals and strategies
for achieving them, being more organized and systematic.

6. Working with others


A leader learn being more sensitive to others, handling conflict in a
constructive manner, developing better relationships.
