I received something very unexpected and touching last Sunday, as I was walking through
Oberholtzer Hall. Mike Ault, who has been attending here for the past three years came up to me
and handed me a framed “Certificate of Achievement” (see photo) for our church “being the best
church I’ve ever went to and for being another family to me.” I don’t think there’s a higher
compliment a church can receive than being “family” to all who come through its doors. I praise
God that our church family is a place of love and acceptance, where everyone feels welcome,
safe, and appreciated for the gifts they offer. Thanks, Mike, for this affirmation of our church as part of your family,
and may we always live up to the that which you’ve stated on this certificate!
I admit to getting a little nostalgic this time of year, especially in 2019 as I look back on five years of ministry
completed here at ESUMC, and thirty five years since my ordination as Elder in 1984 (I was ordained a Deacon
three years before that). I’m sure like me, you sometimes ask the question, “Where has the time gone?” Perhaps a
better question for all of us is, “How has God used me, and what plans does God have for me as I look forward?”
And, “What have I learned from the past which will help guide me toward faithful living in the here and now.” We
have done much together these past five years, but God has many more good things planned for us if we remain
faithful to Jesus Christ and his promises for his church!
One of those “good things” is the weekly Block Party we offer during June and July. We’ve had some challenges
gaining momentum this summer in offering our weekly Block Parties to the community. We’ve had several
Thursdays of rain forcing us to cancel, and it’s not looking good for this Thursday evening as I write this on
Wednesday. Plus, July 4 fell on a Thursday this year and therefore the Block Party was canceled. However, the
ones we’ve had have been well attended and there’s been a great spirit present among those in attendance. I want
to thank all of those who have been involved and invite any who have not attended and helped to please come for
our final three experiences (assuming the one on the 11th happens). We set up from 5:30-6:30 and tear down from
7:30-8:00 pm, and the event itself happens between 6:30-7:30 pm. It’s a short time to make a powerful witness in
our community, and that’s why we’ve been doing this for four years straight. As a reminder, we not only serve food,
we offer games, a prayer tent, and informal outdoor worship as people eat their meals. It’s a great time to be
“family” to our community, so please take advantage before it’s all gone for another summer!
We will be blessed to hear Emmanuel McIntyre challenge us to grow in our faith this coming Sunday, July 14, at
both services. In my five years here, I’ve seen this young man grow and mature into a true
disciple of Christ and “mighty man of faith” to borrow our sermon series title. “Eman” as he is
fondly known, has also achieved much with scouting, and his Eagle Scout project is the new
prayer garden in the front of the church (look to the far right as you face the front from the
sidewalk). Please honor him by hearing him give the message this Sunday, and stop by the
prayer garden to offer prayers of thanksgiving for Eman and all of our wonderful church
family! 1
Blessings in Christ,
Pastor Jim
