1.

(a) Sketch neatly, leaf spring suspension system and indicate the following
major parts:
(i) Center bolt (ii) Main leaf spring (iii) Spring eye (iv) Shackle
pin hole

(b) Explain briefly the main function of the following

(i) Center bolt

 The center bolt is used in beam axle to prevent the forward and backward,
from side to side movement by the action of the spring located in the axle.
 The center bolt is used in beam axle to prevent the forward and backward,
from side to side movement by the action of the spring located in the axle.

(ii) Swing shackle

 Swing shackle are used to allow the leaf spring to extend as it is deflected.
2. (i) State the main function of an engine in the motor vehicle
 The function of the engine is to convert the heat energy contained in the petrol
into mechanical energy in the form of torque or turning power available at
the engine crankshaft.
(ii) Complete the following statement:
 The power unit comprises of the engine, radiator for cooling the
engine, fuel and ignition system and lubrication.
 The transmission of a vehicle include the clutch, gearbox,
propeller shaft, final drive and rear axle.
(iii) Design neatly the transmission system and state clearly the main
function of propeller shaft

3. (a) State the two functions of the flywheel:

 The main function of the flywheel is to retained some of the energy given
to the crankshaft during power stroke and then to release this energy to
keep the crankshaft turning during the idle strokes.

(b) Sketch the following main component of the suspension system:

(i) Front beam axle arrangement (ii) Coil spring suspension

(d) (i) Design neatly the rear axle

(c) What is the important role the chassis play in the design of a motor vehicle?

 The important role play by the chassis in design of a motor vehicle is that, it
is always strong and rigid and so shaped that it will not cause undue
complication to the design and operation of the other assemblies.

(d) (i) State the two main function of twin axle

 The twin axle under all normal operating condition the loads imposed on
each axle maintained are equal.
 When the vehicle is cornering the effect of sliding is reduced because the
axle is kept as close to each other.
(ii) Explain the reason some axles are called dead axle and live axle
 A dead axle is one which does not rotate, only the wheel rotating upon
 the axle either directly or upon bearing mounted on the axle.
 A live axle is one which rotates with the wheel and is supported in ball
or roller bearings mounted on or inside an axle case.

(e) State the reasons why some liners are called wet liners and others are called
dry liners.

 Some liners are known as wet liners because they have direct contact with
the cooling water and are thick walled and rigid.
