For any organization to be successful an ideal leadership is vital.

Be
it government organization or private organization qualities will
determine if the organization thrives or dies with time.
Leadership can be define as a process social influence in which
one person is able to enlist the aid and support of others in
accomplishment of common task. Leadership involves a social
influence process in which one individual exerts intentional
influence over others to structure activities in an organization.
However leadership can be divided into two categories:

A. Transactional leadership

Transactional leaders motivate follower by exchanging rewards for

services rendered. The essence of transactional leadership is
that people are motivated by reward and punishment. Leaders
who favor this style create defined structures including a clear
chain of command. They work on the assumption that once a
deal is struck between boss and subordinate, all authority
passes on to the former, while responsibility rests with the
latter. Transactional leadership involves the use of external
motivators. Transactional leaders pursue a cost-benefit,
economic exchange to meet folowers’current material and
physiology needs in return for contracted services rewarded by
the subordinates. Transactional leaders work within existing
boundaries. They are not effective change agents, because the
very essence of transactional leadership is quiet acceptance of
a situation by the followers. A transactional leader has a short
term view.

1
Transactional leaders use conventional reward and punishment to
gain compliance from their followers. Transactional leaders
accept the goals, structure and culture of the existing
organization. They must do so because this type of leadership
is ineffective at bringing significant change. Transactional
leaders tend to be directive and sometimes dominating. They
tend to be action oriented. Some transactional leaders adopt
this approach because they are unaware of the effect it has on
followers. Transactional leadership is really just a way of
managing rather a true leadership style as the focus is on
short-term tasks. It has serious limitations for knowledge-based
or creative work, but remains a common style in many
organizations

B. Transformational Leadership

2
It is an expansion of transactional leadership. Transformational
leadership starts with the development of a vision, a view of the
future that will excite and convert potential followers. A
transformational leader is one who is able to connect with their
true passion, intent and inner wisdom in order to unlock their
potential for the good of all. Transformational leaders are well
known for being proactive; tend to raise the awareness level of
their subordinates, help their subordinates to achieve highest
output. Transformational leadership is seen when leaders
stimulate others to view their work from new perspectives,
generate the awareness of the mission or vision of the
organization, develop colleagues and followers to higher level
of ability and potential, and motivate them to look beyond their
own interests towards those that will benefit the group.
Besides that, transformational leadership is about
implementing new ideas where the individuals continually
change themselves and they can stay flexible and adaptable.
They can continually improve those around them. These are the
transformational leaders’ characteristics:

CHARISMA. This is the one transformational leadership qualities

which can be said as inspirational.

VISION. By creating vision the leader provides a mean for people to

develop commitment, a common goal and a way for people to
feel successful.

INTELLECTUAL STIMULATION. Transformational leaders show new

way of looking at old problems, they challenge the existing
boundaries and mental prisons people put themselves into.

3
The heart of transformational leadership is the leader’s desire and
ability to raise the consciousness of others by appealing to
powerful moral values and ideals. The leader is able to
transform followers beyond the dishonorable emotions of
jealously, greed and fear to higher principles of liberty, justice
and humanitarianism.

If I am a school principal, after understanding both transactional
leadership and transformational leadership I’ll choose the
transformational leadership and be transformational leader. I
will use the transformational strategies to improve my school.
These is because transformational leadership is more potent
and complex and occur when 1 or more teachers engage with
other in such way that administrator and teacher raise one
another to higher level of commitment and dedication,
motivation and morality. By using transformational leadership,
it can help my school staff develop and maintain a
collaborative, professional school culture. According to this,
my school teachers often talks, observes, critique and plan
together. Norms of collective responsibility and continuous
improvement encourage them to teach each other how to teach
better. Follow by this, it will help to reduce teacher isolation and
use bureaucratic mechanisms to support culture changes,
share leadership with others by delegating power and actively
communicate the school’s norms and beliefs. As a leader I will
have a workshop where it is comfortable for my teachers and
students to participate. This is a chance for all my school staff
to share their talents with one another. Besides that ill also find
the good things that are happening and publicly recognize the
work of staff and students who have contributed to school
improvement event I’ll write private notes to teacher or students
expressing appreciation for special effort. This leadership also
helps my teachers to work smartly by actively seeking different
interpretations and checking out assumptions, place individual
problems in the large perspective of the whole school, avoid
commitment to preconceived solution, clarify and summaries at

the key point during meeting and keep the group on task. As a
principle, I will survey my staff often about their wants and
needs and when hiring with any new staff I will let them know
that I want them to actively involved in school decision making
and want them to be the best teachers they possibly can be.
Being a school principal, I will make sure all the teachers in my
school are responsible for all students not just their own
classes. These are how I will use transformational leadership to
improve my school if I am a school principal.
