Dimensioning orthographic views

• Dimensions follows ASME

• Dimensions are needed to communicate
important information about size & location of
the featured object
• Line layers
• Tolerances ( + )
Tolerancing terminology

• Nominal size: a dimension used to describe

the general size of the feature.

• Limits: max & min sizes as defined by

toleranced dimension
– Ex: 0.5+ 0.2, upper limit: 0.52 lower limit: 0.48

• Allowance: min clearance/ max interference

• Datum: a theoretically perfect element from

which dimensional information are referred.

Adding dimensions (dim)

• Size and location dim

Dim terminology
Guidelines

• Avoid dim. on the hidden hole/centre lines

• Whenever possible, group dimensions and

place them between views

• Avoid ext. lines through dim. lines

• Avoid placing dim. on the part unless it is

absolutely necessary
Poorly placed dim
Well placed dim
Alignment of text
• ISO standard can use both
• ASME cannot use aligned text

Unidirectional text

Aligned text
Holes & Arc
Cylindrical shapes

• Must be side by side

Line Layers

• Normally we have only 1 layer

• But to draw orthographic drawings we need
more layers
• Dimension line
• Extension line
• Hidden line
• Centre line
• Etc.
Dimension command
• Click “Annotate”
• Select Dimension
• There are many types of dimension
– Linear, aligned, arc, radius, jogged, diameter,
angular, center mark, tolerance, inspection
– ordinate – just to put dimension without line &
arrow
• Adding a leader
– Select leader
– Select multileader
– Or type “LE”
– Ortho On to draw horizontal line
Example 2
• Draw
– 3,3
– 2.5,0
– 0,-1
– 1.5,0
– 0,1
– 2.5,0
– 0,2
– 2.5 tab 127
– -2,0
– 1.5tab120
– 1.5tab120
– -1.5,0
– C
– Create circle (4,6) D= 1.0
– Create circle (4,6) R=0.3
– Create fillet R=1.0
Creating Dim New Style
• Select Dimension Style
• New
• Type file name
• Edit
– Lines= Dim line – red, Ext line - yellow
– Symbols = Arrow size – 0.35, Mark centre - 0.35
– Text = colour –yellow, height 0.35
– Fit = no changes
– Primary units = decimal, precision 0.00 scale factor -1
– Alternate = no changes
– Tolerance = precision – 0.00, upper value - 0.10
• Set current
Line Layers

• Normally we have only 1 line and this is named 1 layer

• But to draw orthographic drawings we need more
layers/more lines
• Click Home
• Select Layer Properties
• Set the required settings
• We need 3 lines/3 layers
– Object line
– Hidden line
– Centre line
Properties

• Used to change
– Colour
– Line size
– Line type
– Line weight
– Thickness
Example 1
Practical 4

• Sketch the top, front & side orthographic

views of this object using different lines
Setting:
• Drawing limit A4 ( 29.7 , 21.0)cm
• Arrow size: 0.125
• Centre mark:0.20
• Hidden line: red
• Centre line: green
• Extension & dimension line: white
• Dimension text: yellow color
• Text height: 0.25
• Precision : 0.00, tolerance ±0.01 symmetrical
• Put the following info at the title box; name, scale ,
practical no & date
