OCEANARIUM

1 Building Typology : Recreation & Educational

1.1Classification:Design based ( Live Project)
Introduction:
Oceanarium can be a marine mammal park as well as large scale aquarium presenting an ocean
habitat with marine life. An aquarium simulates a water habitat; for instance a river, lake or sea;
but only the submerged area of these natural habitats. ”Establishments where collection of living
aquatic animals and plants are exhibited or studied.”

2 Aim:
Ecology:
It will aim at the conservation of marine life and the ecological balance, which is
disrupted by the activities of man. Not only to protect the marine flora and fauna from dangers of
extinction but also to create an environment conducive for its growth.
Education:
A part of the design program will aim at research and development of formal institution
to impart knowledge to students on the science of oceanography. The other part will aim at
spreading awareness among the visitors through entertainment so that they have better
understanding of the marine life. An oceanarium brings conservation needs and duties can be
made more popular. A visitor will leave the oceanarium with much more respect for the life it
holds.
Entertainment:
The oceanarium is proposed to be a center of recreation, entertainment and adventure. It
should serve as a habitat to revive the spirit of man.

3 Objectives:
The objective is to encourage tourists of all age groups and from all walks of life to better
recognize and care about our waters and seas. By amazing displays and fun plans, we target to
offer both amusement and schooling for every person that walks into the aquarium.
3.1 Scope of work and limitations:
The idea is to create awareness of the vast ocean and its potentials that is something most people
who live in a country with one of the biggest coastline don’t have proper knowledge about. The

design will provide master plan and zoning of all spaces and will not focus on the design of the
promenade and herbarium.

4.1Project brief:
The government has acquired 15 acres of land close to the shore at Manapet for the oceanarium.
The proposed project will be implemented by NIOT while the oceanarium would be
maintained by the Tourism Department. The oceanarium would showcase an array of marine
life and fishes, boost tourism and give a world class experience to tourists.
The Fisheries Department, technical support partner of the project, has now invited proposals
from agencies interested to provide consulting services for preparation of techno-commercial
feasibility study and transaction advisory services.
Besides the main pavilion consisting of aquarium alley, aqua terrarium, lagoon, tunnel, deep sea
forum, shark tank and touch pools, the oceanarium is likely to have a marine heritage pavilion,
herbarium, polar pavilion, water promenade.A leisure pavilion with restaurant and underwater
vision also forms part of the facilities that will come on the site.
4.2 Need of an Oceanarium:
India is one of the largest peninsulas in the world with water surrounding from 3 sides, the
Arabian sea to the west, the Indian ocean to the south and bay of Bengal to the east. India has a
coastline of 7500km.
Urbanization, progressive development and pollution have resulted in decline of marine species
in and around India. This has resulted in the decline of tourism and fishery industry; this has led
to great fall in the level of income by the government. Indian water is a gold mine for ornamental
fish traders with more than 100 varieties of species and same for exotic fishes, the fauna found in
With such a large variety of both marine and aquatic species, India should try and exhibit some
of its marine species to educate people about the importance of taking care of the countries
marine life.
5. Site and
Justification

Area : 15 acre
Location: Manapet,
Pondicherry

For a city that aspires to be in many aspects like Singapore, it is a no-brainer that Sentosa would
inspire an oceanarium project.
As part of the territorial government’s plans to develop a world class oceanarium at Manapet, the
National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) was told to prepare a detailed project report
(DPR).
The government had zeroed in on three prime locations in Puducherry to build the oceanarium.
The team from NIOT visited the three places and finally selected the one at Manapet. The
government has acquired 15 acres of land.close to the shore at Manapet for the oceanarium. The
proposed project will be implemented by NIOT while the oceanarium would be maintained by
the Tourism Department.Besides the main pavilion consisting of aquarium alley, aqua terrarium,
lagoon, tunnel, deep sea forum, shark tank and touch tanks, the oceanarium is likely to have a
marine heritage pavilion, herbarium, polar pavilion, water promenade.

Acrylic underwater tunnel
A good lighting system duplicates the different lighting spectrum of the ocean. A good lighting
systems allows corals to open more frequently and to show their natural colour.
