In all honesty, when I was choosing a course for college I wanted to take up a course that

is prerequisite for Medicine School, so I chose Psychology because it is the course with “less
Math” subjects (which I eventually realized is the opposite). I also became initially interested in
psychology when I was helping my cousin who was having problems at home and was considering
suicide. I didn’t know what is the right thing to say and do. This incident ignited my desire to learn
more about human behavior and how to help those in need. As I studied psychology more, I
found what excites me most of all were the exploration and understanding of an individual’s
behavior and why is a person acts the way he does. It stimulated me to think and explore my
world as I took courses in development, psychopathology, and personality. I have become more
and more interested in the field of clinical psychology during my four years as an undergraduate
psychology major.

Working in National Center for Mental Health as an Occupational Therapy Technician I

has further fuelled my interest; every day I see aspects of human behavior that could have come
straight from a Psychology textbook. My employment has taught me many skills, including
excellent levels of concentration, understanding and patience. Being assigned at a Chronic
geriatric ward, it breaks my heart to see a patient’s functioning deteriorate due to psychological
illness that can’t be managed by medicines alone; and again, I find myself helpless trying to think
of what to do to help them even more. Thus, inspiring me to take up a Master’s degree in Clinical
Psychology so that I could help more people that are in need. Not just by counseling and therapies
but also through research on what could further restore or enhance a person’s mental health.
Furthermore, the Implementing Rules and Regulation for the Mental Health Law was recently
signed at the NCMH.

I believe that combined with my enthusiasm for the subject and the skills I have learned
through my undergraduate and work experience will make me an ideal candidate for studying
Clinical Psychology. I am looking forward to extending my knowledge in this exciting discipline,
and contributing to it in the future.
