PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF MULTIOBJECTIVE GENETIC
ALGORITHM OPTIMIZATION IN DRILLING OF CFRP COMPOSITE
Abstract -
• Purpose- Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites have a large range of
application in aircraft industries, automotive and medical industry. The CFRP composites
are joined together by bolting hence high quality of hole required. Poor hole quality
accounts for an estimated 60% of all part rejections. So, it is very important to pick out
optimum parameters for produce high quality of hole, improve drilling tool bit life and
machining effectiveness, which measured in terms of delamination, torque and thrust.
• Design/methodology/approach- Machining trials concerned drilling of 8-mm diameter
holes on 3-mm-thick CFRP plates was performed consistent with the design of experiment
technique exploitation the drill material of high-speed steel (HSS).
• Findings- optimize delamination, thrust force and torque did by the multi-objective genetic
algorithm. The results of the confirmation run for the responses delamination, thrust force,
torque are shown good relationship with the prediction optimum parameter. The most
effective parameter toward variation in delamination, torque and thrust were found by
ANOVA.
• Practical implications- optimization of process parameter for drilling operation which
increase machine efficiency, reduce defects and improve quality of hole at minimum tool
wear.
• Originality/value- This paper deals with the multi objective optimization for improve
quality of hole and drilling tool life. Experimental investigation on delamination factor,
thrust force and torque in drilling of CFRP using multi objective genetic algorithm
optimization for different helix angle was seldom reported.
Keywords: CFRP, Multi-objective GA, ANOVA, Delamination.

Research Paper

1. Introduction

Composites are among the most adaptable advanced engineering materials well-known till date.
Composite materials have been wide utilized in structural applications. Light weight, high specific
feed rate, whereas the helix angle of drill bit was insignificant.
• According to results obtain from ANOVA (Referring section 3.3), spindle speed was found
to the most effective parameter toward variation in thrust effect when compared to spindle
feed rate, whereas the helix angle of drill bit was insignificant.
• Based on experiment analysis (referring Table 10), the tool with helix angle 350 gave
minimum delamination effect, thrust and torque as compared to the tools with helix angle 270

• The results predicted by the RSM regression equation (referring table 9) were in good
agreement with experimental data. The developed model has been inline with the results of
Davim et. al, (2003) and Aslan et. al, (2007).

• Multi objective genetic algorithm optimization gave optimum parameters for optimum
delamination, torque and thrust force (spindle speed 1467 rpm, feed rate 0.13013 mm/rev.,
delamination 1.192, torque 1.198096, thrust 14.1032).
