The core business of Petrofac-RNZ is delivering services on either a stand-alone

or integrated basis and under a range of commercial models, which are tailored to meet
customer’s needs.

Engineering, Construction, Operations & Maintenance and Integrated Energy Services.

For the first one, Petrofac-RNZ provide reimbursable services. Where the cost of
services is reimbursed by the customer plus an agreed margin. A large portion of service
provided by engineering and consulting services and offshore projects and operations are
remunerated on this basis. Besides that, Petrofac-RNZ also highlighted Cost Plus KPIs.
Often the company reimbursable contracts will include incentive income linked to be
successful delivery of key performance indicators (KPIs), for example, Duty Holder
projects like the Kittiwake Platform in the UK North Sea for Centrica. Next is, Lump-
Sum Turnkey. Onshore engineering & construction undertakes engineering, procurement
and construction (EPC) projects predominantly on a lump-sum or fixed-price basis, for
example the South Yoloten project in Turkmenistan. The company expect to undertake
more lump-sum turnkey projects in offshore projects and operations as the company take
their EPC capability offshore.

The second category, Integrated Energy Services. Risk Service Contracts (RSC),
where the company develop, operate and maintain a field, while the resource holder
retains ownership and control of their reserves. Petrofac-RNZ interests are aligned: will
fund the development and will be reimbursed (often from production cash flows) and will
receive a remuneration fee based upon performance, for example, the Berantai Project in
Malaysia. RSCs typically have low exposure to commodity prices and reservoir
performance. Furthermore, for Production Enhancement Contracts (PEC). Where
Petrofac-RNZ get paid a tariff per barrel for oil and gas production and therefore have no
direct commodity price exposure. PECs are appropriate for mature fields which have a
long production history. The company contracts are long-term, for example 15 years on

WORK ENVIRONMENT

TEAMWORKS

Petrofac Management had created and manages successful teams. Some of the ways that
they use are:

1. Form teams to solve real work issue and improve real work processes.
The manager provides the team with teamwork training beforehand on
systematic methods of team work. The team will focus on accomplishing the
project, not on how to work together as a team.
2. Hold department meeting to review projects and progress.

not developing a healthy relationship. Department meeting give the manager
the opportunity to examine the team’s progress. If a team is falling behind, the
manager of the project will always see if the team has personality issues or
difficulties in agreeing on the best approach.
3. Build fun and shared experience into the organization’s agenda.
The manager always helps the team think as a unit within a fun work
environment so that everyone on the team feels involved and appreciated. For
example, management sponsor department lunch to sporting events or team
retreats.

Team work in Petrofac has great importance for more than one reason. Working together
in a team with different skills and experience, may improve each employee’s individual
performances. Besides that, using teams, multiple people can work simultaneously to
complete individual tasks. Thus, it will be able to reduce the time required to complete
specific activities and increase the speed to accomplish a project.

WORK EXPERIENCE

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION

Offshore Structures engineering

Offshore structures engineering is really large field of studies and I will explain
only the topic I applied during this training period. The project I’m doing during this
period is Structural Integrity Assessment (SIA) project located in the South China Sea at
Sarawak, Malaysia. There are about 110 platforms that me and others trainee should check
and do Weight Control Report (WCR) for every platform. The platforms are assigned
equally and random. Each platform have their own type, such as drilling platform, vent
platform, production platform, living quarter’s platform and many more. This project is
based on the design basis we received from our client Petronas Cari Gali Sdn Bhd. , the
code we are using are Petronas Technical Standards and American Petroleum Institute.

As we know each offshore structure, platform consist of 2 categories which are

superstructure and substructure. Superstructure consist of all the topside parts, such as
cellar deck, mezzanine deck, main deck and heli deck, while substructure is the sump deck
and below to the sea, or we called it as jacket. To do our WCR, we just check the topsides
decks. Sometimes the platform have their modules, and these modules will have high
weight and will affect the whole platform, thus the loading must be check carefully to
avoid unwanted accidents.

Besides, platform the steel beams that make the platform are really important. The
properties, size, length and more, must be checked to design a platform. During this
training period, I’ve learned a lot about the steels by going through the drawings and
framing plans. Some of the important knowledge I learned is to classify main beams and
secondary beams, which based on American Standards, 10 inch below the height of beam
or the outer diameter of tubular beams are the secondary beams and of course size 12 inch
and above are main beams. To look at all the beams, we must know if the beams are
unbraced, braced and if it have stiffener under the beams, all these little things are
important to check the loading and to design stringer if needs, to maintain the platform.

29
Student Industrial Training Report

Other than that, I learned that we as the future engineer need to be good to convert
units. During this training periods, I have seen a lot of different codes use for the drawings,
such as American, British and also European. Really need to be careful when convert inch
to millimeter and pound to kilogram.

Weight Control Report

This is the first task I received from Mdm. Sapiah, the Lead Engineer for SIA
project. WCR is a report that have all the loading data (Dry load, Hydrotest load,
Operational load) of the platform and the center of gravity of each deck in the platform.
To do WCR we must check the existing SACS model (a Bentley program to design
offshore structure), the existing equipment layout and also the latest report of the inplace
analysis of the platform. The first priority data to fill in the WCR is from existing SACS
model, then using the latest report, lastly using the equipment layout of the platform.
Basically the equipment layout is to orientates so that it have the same orientations, and
easy for us to know the loadings. The other use of equipment layout is to add mechanical
loading into WCR if the SACS model didn’t have the weight of the mechanical component
that shows in the equipment layout. Next, is the use of the existing reports, it is use as a
guidance to know the weight for structural, mechanical, electrical and piping, instrument
and also open area live load. Some of the reports have the latest data for the SACS we’ve
got to check loading. The SACS model is the most important priority because our client
give the latest SACS model to check. By using the SACS model, we can easily check the
loadings and also check the fail member on the platforms and later will decide what to do
with the fail member by client and our lead engineer.

SKILLS GAINED

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Since the first day I came to Petrofac-RNZ, our manager, Ir Azmi have talk to all
the trainees, how important communication skills when we start working. “The most
important matter when working, is to know what your boss wants from you and what he
expects to get”, our manager said. To know our boss, communication skills are in play,
we should always be clear what our superior wants. Since, our manager assigned his Lead
Engineer for Structural Integrity Assessment (SIA), Mdm. Sapiah to guide us to do SIA
project, we ask a lot of question to her. An effective communication skills, includes
listening, nonverbal communication, managing stress and emotional awareness. Effective
communication skills is to make other person to understand what we wants them to
understand, and also avoid misunderstanding.

TIME MANAGEMENT

Time management is very important for our daily lives, and it relates to discipline.
However, in Petrofac-RNZ, there’s a Timesheet Management System (e-Timesheet). This
program, record all of the employee attendance and calculate the time spend in office.
Usually the working hour for each employee should be 40 hours a week. The hours
distribute is, 8 hour 15 minutes for Monday to Thursday, and 7 hour for Friday, because
Muslim need to pray in the afternoon and usually will spend 2 hour lunch break to pray
and have lunch. The time is from 8-9am until 5.15pm and above. If anyone came later
than 9am, they will get warning and there will be consequences. Each time we spend time
to the toilet, the hours will not be recorded, meaning the employee should replace his/her
time for the hour he/she spent in the toilet.

Besides attendance, time management is really important whenever we’ve got a

task or assign with projects. The best way to deal with this matter is by, finish it as soon
as possible. But doesn’t mean to finish it by not learning what we just do, I usually take
time to understand and always questioning the origin. Other than that, the task that need
to complete must always in the right track, else it will take some of our time to complete
the task.

31
Student Industrial Training Report

By doing all the Petrofac-RNZ routine and ethics, it have teach me to be more
punctual and be more responsible of the risk I take in the future.

INITIATIVE

To gain as much knowledge as possible during this internship period. We should

have initiative to do that. Some of the initiative I’ve done is, by asking other engineers of
their opinion. I know to complete my task I should directly consult with my supervisor or
the Lead Engineer for the project, but asking other engineers, drafters and designers
opinion will give new perspective about the task needed to complete.

Learn To Read Drawings

I have learned a lot to read platform structural drawings from a few drafter and
also designer, they’ve been really helpful to me and always give me extra knowledge
about their field.

Learn Oil and Gas Structure Terms.

For senior engineer, they’ve been teaching me a lot of Oil and Gas terms and teach
me quite a lot about the codes they’re using in Petrofac-RNZ. All of the workers in
Petrofac-RNZ are friendly and very helpful. When some of the engineers cannot answer
my question, they’ll find me, someone that professional at that field to explain the answer
I need. Event though, all of the engineers and senior engineers are busy, they still manage
to help us by prioritize us.

Learn to use SACS.

They are about 13 computers in Petrofac-RNZ that have Bentley License and all the
computers are located near to each other’s. Every time I’m not sure how to proceed, I will
ask other engineers that are using SACS, and they will come to me and show step by step
how to proceed my task.

KNOWLEDGE

UNDERSTANDING JOB REQUIREMENT

During the training period, there are a lot of new knowledge I gained. All of my
task/job were handed by Mdm Sapiah, Lead Engineer of SIA project, as an intern there
are some question I’ve ask to understand the job requirement. The question as below:

1. Type and properties of steel use to design platform

There are a lot of types and properties of steel use in each platform I’ve done
analysis. The most common type of steel I’ve seen are tubular and wide flange
beams. Each type have a lot of sizes and properties. Once all of the types and
properties of steel is clear, it’s easier to understand how to complete the task given.
2. Analysis of the platform
There are a lot of analysis can be done to a platform, based on its surrounding and
the task given. The analysis of the platform we have is in-place. It’s easier for our
platform because it’s a brownsfield category. It’s an exist platform and not to really
design from a scratch.

COMPLETING TASK GIVEN ON TIME

As discuss above about time management, we should complete the given task on
time and perfectly understand what we just do. There are many ways to practice time
management, one of it is being organized and always make a list of priorities. By doing a
list that need to be done, it’s easier to know which one to do first and know how much
time I will used.

DISCUSSION ON SUSTAINABILITY

COMMON PRACTICE AND FUTURE RECOMMENDATIONS ON (IF ANY)

ENVIRONMENTAL

The recent history of the oil and gas industry has revealed the fact that this sector is highly
risky. In order to minimize unwanted accidents such as explosion, fire and oil spill,
Petrofac relentlessly ensure the technical integrity of the plants they design, build and
operate.

As of 2011, Petrofac carried out their regular operation to improve and enhance the
processes and systems they use to monitor the plants they operate. As the company
expands its commerce, it adopts assets that have not previously been managed. It is hence
essential to carry out such improvement to ensure those assets fulfill the company’s
quality standards. Each Petrofac operation carries out more than 30 assets integrity
assessments, regarding plant reliability and condition, management of maintenance and
assurance of activities and organizational matters. In 2011, Petrofac also improved the
schemes the company uses to evaluate performance.

Besides these, Petrofac also developed a new software tool to achieve a more systematic
overview of the integrity reviews carried out across all its international projects, from
design and build to operations and maintenance. Audits of five main sites are also
conducted to assess their protection against and preparedness for major accidents. Ayman
Asfari, Group Chief Executive of Petrofac personally conducted such safety focused visits
to 5 operational sites each year.

The company’s Asset Integrity Review Board (AIRB), which is co-chaired by Bill
Dunnett, Offshore Projects & Operations Managing Director and its Group Director,
Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Integrity Assurance (HSSEIA) meet one
another on a monthly basis. The AIRB involves every operations manager from each
operated site. It serves as a platform for review and support to handle potential issues. Due
to Petrofac’s international expansion, from 2012 onwards, the AIRB meet twice a month
for both the eastern and western hemisphere.

Petrofac is dedicated to conserving the environment and improving our environmental

performance. This effort reflects both responsible corporate manners and appropriate
business ethics.

The company manages the environmental impact of its operations by involving its
community and employees in protecting the local areas. This helps building relationships
with the customers and societies in its operational areas. Limiting energy consumptions
lowers carbon footprint and reduces operational costs; preventing leaks and spills cut
down oceanic and coastal pollutions.

Petrofac also controls waste and carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency. In a
recycling program at its Aberdeen offices in Scotland, the company successfully reduced
its landfill waste by more than 80%, saved up to £110,000 (approximately RM520, 100).
The program includes replacing all rubbish bins with recycle bins in every department.
They also innovatively provide the employees with fertilizers for their home gardens.
These fertilizers are made from the composted office waste. In Petrofac’s office tower in
Sharjah, another program was carried out, reducing the tower’s energy consumption by
16%.

Also, the company maintains its membership of the Arab Forum for Environment and
Development, working hand-in-hand with the Emirates Environmental Group.

In the future, Petrofac will continuously strengthen the consistency

ECONOMICAL

Sustainability is now generally understood to be a combination of environmental,

political, cultural and economic performance, it is found that economic sustainability is
the most indescribable component among those four. Even though there is no universal
consensus that says business should be economically sustainable, it is needed to prevent
devastations and inefficiencies in business operations. When it comes to the economic
side of sustainability, there are a few things that are put into consideration by Petrofac. In
late 2011, as Petrofac President and head of the new corporate development & strategy
group, Maroun Semaanhas has decided to sponsor a wide-ranging programs, ‘Fit for
2015’, to ensure that they have all the necessities in place for sustainable growth. This will
be attained by focusing on three key areas are people, partnerships and process.

The core to the strategy revolves around the development of more local operational
centers which will be carried out with the pursue of a few initiatives which are: local
recruitment programs; collaborative partnerships, for example, with local fabrication,
design engineering and operations support centers; maximizing relationships within local
supply chains; developing common Group-wide business processes.

Petrofac realizes that recruitment and retainment of the highest caliber people is
crucial in staying sustainable in this competitive field. Their never-ending commitment in
employing and developing local resources and working within local supply chains is
seemingly helpful in meeting this need and is primary to Petrofac’s philosophy of creating
sustainable operations. So to put it in action, the company has delivered bespoke programs
to support national workforce development, facilitated by their Training Services
business. These may be run as stand-alone courses or in conjunction with the projects and
operations.

Aside from that, local delivery is also recognized as an important aspect especially
for resource holders, who increasingly want to develop skilled local workforces,
transferring knowledge and extending employment opportunities which in turn will also
contribute in the enhancement of the company’s talent collection. As strong talent base is
considered the key to success, the company is consistently focusing on ensuring that many
of the processes that support this, such as the performance management framework, are

being optimally operated the way it should be, and not being diverted from the original
goal.

The second thing that is worked on in strengthening the company’s sustainability

is its partnerships. Petrofac has worked hard in building strategic relationships with
customers, partners, suppliers and communities to position itself at the same level with
other world-class organizations. Recent strategic collaborations include the 2011 joint
venture agreement with China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation
(CPECC) and the January 2012 co-operation agreement with leading oilfield services
company Schlumberger. In Turkmenistan, on the company’s South Yoloten gas field
project, the company proudly has approximately 70% local workforce as the result of the
successful collaborative partnership.

POLITICAL AND CULTURAL DIMENSIONS

Petrofac-RNZ does not involve in any political parties in Malaysia. The majority
of Petrofac-RNZ workers are local and multiracial. There’re never arose any racial issue
in the company. They respect one another and accept their differences without any
prejudices. They are very helpful and ready to help anyone in need.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

OVERALL SUMMARY

During this 10 weeks of industrial training at Petrofac-RNZ, I have learned a lot

of new things that I probably will not learned when studying. A lot of work exposure I
have faced and it’s a great opportunity for me to gain a lot of knowledge here in Petrofac-
RNZ. I feel grateful to have a good Supervisor and also a good Lead Engineer that always
encourage me to ask them any question, even it’s not related to work. I have learned team
work, leadership, management and also communication skills. I was able to know most
everyone in this Structural Department, even I don’t memorized all their names but I
remembered their faces.

The exposure to oil and gas field have help me to become more independent and
have challenge me to become more adaptable with working environment. The manager
and my lead engineer have also motivate me to see my career path much clearer and
there’s actually a lot of option that we can choose in life. They also motivate me to get
good CGPA in university to get higher opportunity to go inside Oil and Gas field.

In a nutshell, industrial training provides a good platform for each students as they
are really a lot of knowledge to learn in working place. To make it 8 months of internships,
make UTP students more exposure to working environment at make the students more
mature. It’s a good way to produce great future engineer from UTP.

Recommendation

Maintain this long period of internship

UTP should always maintain the 28 weeks of internship period which is approximately 7
months as compared to most of other university that only offers a maximum of 3 months
training period. This long period of training provide the students a better platform for them
to experience the working life as well as having more time to learn. Therefore, they will
receive more exposure and will perform better during their working life in the future.

39
Student Industrial Training Report

Provide special course or training

The internship will be more effective if Petrofac Engineering Services provide few basic
course or training for the internship students in order for them to get a better view of oil
and gas industry as well as to be inspired and motivated to be involve in the oil and gas
industry. Perhaps the company can introduce a more effective and efficient internship
program’s planning mostly made for the internship students that have a training period
more than 6 months. In such a way that the trainee can have a better learning process and
space
