Report
Aiming to provide awareness about Nutrition, the team members of Jagori Grameen –
Himachal Pradesh went to Govt. Senior Secondary School Mandal on 22nd June’2019 in
Dharamshala Block to conduct a workshop on Nutrition with 9th and 10th standard students.
There were 86 students out of which 40 were Girls and 46 were boys. Komal and Kavita were
the facilitators who conducted the session with the team member Kritika.
It started with an interactive session about breakfast, we saw that 27 out of 86 students don’t
have their breakfast before coming to school. The significance of healthy living was
explained with an example of what are the things that are required for a plant to grow, same
ways human body also needs water, food, oxygen, cleanliness, freedom, entertainment and
good family environment to have a healthy life mentally and physically. It was said that the
best way to live is to ‘breakfast like a king, Lunch like a Queen and dinner like a sepoy’,
which means that the breakfast should be the largest meal, lunch should be lesser than the
breakfast and the dinner should be the smallest meal as it doesn’t get digested properly while
we are sleeping. The right amount of haemoglobin required in a human body is 13-14 grams,
and if the haemoglobin level is low a person may feel fatigue. It also causes Anemia i.e. lack
of right amount of blood. Symptoms of Anemia were told such as decreased energy,
weakness, pale, dizziness, fainting, white patches on skin, irritation and sleep disbalance.
Then self-care at Home for anemics were explained which includes tricolor meal i.e. Saffron
(pulses), White (milk products) and Green (vegetables), being hydrated, intake of Vitamins,
minerals, proteins and Iron. Food items according to their availability and affordability were
suggested such as Black chickpeas, pear, litchi, spinach, jaggery.
The session was concluded with two questions: -
What have you learned during the session on Nutrition?
What do you want to learn in the next session?

Feedback
School age children need healthy food and nutrition to fuel their busy bodies. The result of
this session was that most of the students were not aware of anemia and were not taking
proper meals. They were very enthusiastic to learn about nutrition in and interactive manner.
The questionnaire shows the increased knowledge of the students and their curiosity to know
more about such health issues. The students were encouraged to make their own healthy
choices with the right amount of calories and fat. They were impressed by the idea that even
the iron vessels can be of so much use. It was overall a positive session for the team and for
the students.
