Philosophical, Psychological, Sociological Foundations of Education

Academic paper #2

Philosophy varies along the belief, culture, tradition and environmental attributes we have. Here
in the Philippines we are raised and introduced to an ever changing curriculum that suits to the needs of
the society. Therefore, as a teacher, our philosophy adjusts and differs on how we deliver our teaching
on a kind of learner, lesson and strategy we will use. Also, knowledge is relatively different in times and
places. But bases can be used at the past to address certain issues in the present.

My educational philosophy is somehow a mix or combination of what I think and I desire is good
and suits to the welfare of all. As a teacher who’s I say a newbie, just came in serving for three years and
choose this profession accidentally, (but loves it and embraces it thoroughly) I constantly learn every
class I handled, every learners I had encountered and co-teachers I work with. In such I’m still a student
that wants to learn and adjust to every situation.

Education is a life-long process, as a teacher and a facilitator of learner in a 21st century setup,
I’m still open for grasping new ideas, knowledge, skill and philosophies to flourish my recent state, thus
enrolling in a grad school, making research, attending seminars and any professional endeavor
contributes to my growth and simultaneously to the people around me.

Education or school should not think by everyone in which a place to compete, to excel and to
be graduated just to find and land in a job and become rich, but rather a place to hone and to develop
individuals ability to be a good citizen who is productive, patriotic and a contributor to the society he or
she belongs. In which also makes a society a social reform for the welfare of all.

Three years and counting in, in my journey: encountering lots of people, convening to lots of any
persons in the different walks of life either a professional or layman, as a teacher who has a bloodline to
the old curriculums and using the new one to teach, in which I think were different and has a different
impact on me. Learning since then focus more on a teacher-centered setup in which we know has a pros
and cons, but looking now as how children digest the learning is a far more different than ours.
Advantage is, we were mold to master the basics first with the 3Rs’ (reading, writing and arithmetic)
before we jump to a higher level of learning of competencies. As I see now, children focus much on
ideals of too much group tasking and performance in which as an elementary teacher must focus first on
the philosophy of essentialist, by gaining the required basics before stepping in to a higher
competencies. Primary and even pre-school should start the intrinsic learning the basics. And as it goes
to the intermediate level in elementary reading habit must be exercised. Expose children to libraries and
use of the English and Filipino language and for me mother-tongue must be a mere subject not a mode
of teaching for learning.

Learning in early stage must focus on the grasping and mastering the basics, in my experience,
explicit strategy works well. This teaching strategy implies guided instruction in the basic understanding
of required skills, which learner build on through practice, repetition and hands on activities. After
acquiring the complete knowledge from its foundations i.e the basics, a more progressive type approach
or a learner-centered may be given e.g. inquiry-based learning and more experiential learning. Having
these learning processes make the learning more broad but productive and quality output-oriented.
Also, teachers only assist and process the learning they have. We know curriculum varies in what the
society needs. And this curriculum we have right now, the K to 12, will improve and change as the
disadvantages and errors will be addressed. It will be enhance as we all do our part in making it more
useful for us and for others. We have lots of guides from the past to use and opportunity to use more
modern philosophy to construct a curriculum which is much valuable and useful.

Additionally, we teachers have a big role in implementing the curriculum as we hold the key to
the curriculum process. As we use variety of techniques, encourage the learners and deliver the content
in a creative and impactful ways, we too create and choose freely what to use effectively to meet
certain standards or objectives and attain the desired learning. We too have the ability to improve it
thru research and promoting helpful programs to make it better.

Teacher use the curriculum and implement it, but teachers also have a big roles and relationship
to its students, pupils or learners. As I am learning this noblest job, I am thankful that supervisor and
master teachers and even seasoned teachers coach me and advise me on my teaching profession, and I
see them as a model that guides me to become a competent and responsible source of learning, a
teacher. The best way for me in engaging the pupils I handled was through the use of the experiences I
had (the good ones), advices from my superiors and also those techniques and strategies that I believe
beneficial to the children I handled that they learn more easily. The relationship between them must
have no boundaries, an open communication and good connection must be exercised. These includes
for me transmitting the heritage, encourage self expression and self-definition, constructing knowledge
and solving problems in a more exciting way. But these are necessary if the pupils mastered the basic
first. Transmitting the heritage is important as the history tracing and tracking involves realization on
addressing a present problem that must never be committed again. Encourage self expression and self
definitions that widen more the horizon of learning. It involves lots of ideas and experiences to partake
the learning, but still teachers assist them.
The curriculum, the learner and we teachers correlate each other. It correlates in the sense that
we the teachers use the framework in the curriculum, use some strategies, techniques and philosophies
that we know usable and helpful for our learners who will become the next and future citizen of our
country.
