The People of God – Part 1
He gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists,
others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work
of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain
to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature
manhood, and to the extent of the full stature of Christ. Ephe-
sians 4:11-13
The letter of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul dur-
ing his imprisonment in Rome between the years 61-63
AD. Paul had served the church at Ephesus, a Greek city
in present day Turkey, for three years. During that time,
he had formed a close relationship with them (Acts 19-20).
However, his great letter to them deals not so much about
any particular problem they as a new church were having,
but rather is addressed to the worldwide church, the head
of which is Christ. Thus, his teachings and advice given in
this letter are relevant for all churches throughout the ages
whether in 1st century Asia Minor or in 21st century Prairie
du Chien.
The verses above from the 4th chapter are part of
the letter in which Paul discusses the gifts Christ bestows
on the church to facilitate its growth and renewal. (Eph 4:7
-24) During this time of transition for Holy Family Parish,
these verses can teach us several things.
First, Christ equips His Church by giving the
members of the Church various gifts. (The apostle Paul
also teaches about gifts in 1 Cor 12:4-31 and Rom 12:3-
8.) The point is this: no one person can perform all tasks
necessary for the Church to fulfill its mission, but no one
person is without a role. Father Wolfe in his homily last
weekend reminded us that all have been called to disciple-
ship. Father Weighner in his farewell piece in last week’s
bulletin encouraged us to become more active in our faith
life by offering our talents to the various ministries of the
parish.
Second, the leaders of the Church – apostles,
prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers- are serv-
ants. Their role is not to do all the ministry of the
Church. Yes, the bishop and the priests have certain tasks
– primarily the administration of the sacraments, that by
virtue of their ordination, only they can perform. But Paul
teaches, they serve to “equip the holy ones for the work of
ministry”. Who are the holy ones? Every Christian! Incor-
porated into Christ’s church at our baptism, we are a
“chosen race, a royal priesthood… who in times past were
not a people, but now are the People of God” (1 Pet 2:9-
10, Lumen Gentium, 2). What is our ministry? To pro-
claim the Gospel through our words and actions to the
whole world! (Mt 28:19-20)

Lastly, the Church on earth’s primary goal is that it
become holy. It is not enough that we as individuals aspire
to holiness. The Father and Son sent the Holy Spirit to the
disciples that a Church would be formed, that could lead us
all to a unity of faith and knowledge, maturity in Christ –
being perfect as our Father is perfect. Yes, God loves us indi-
vidually, but his plan is that we become a new family headed
by his Son.
Understanding that we are the People of God and
that we are all called to ministry is of practical im-
portance. In next week’s bulletin, I will discuss why this is
so.

The second collection came to $418.65 for June 30th and the

for Prairie Catholic School and our Religious Education

 BREWERS BUS TRIP
Our server baseball outing is being opened up to
all parishioners. If you would like to participate in
this fun filled day with many fellow parishioners,
please contact Ken or Mary Stoeffler or the parish
office soon. Any student younger than 4th grade
must be accompanied by a parent.
The date is set for Wednesday, August 14th, 2019
Brewers vs. Minnesota Twins. The bus will leave from
St. John’s School Parking Lot at 7:30 am. Game time
is 1:10 pm. Cost is $15.00 for students and $30.00 for
adults (no refunds if you pay and decide not to go.)
Price includes bus ride, game ticket, tailgating before
the game and sandwiches/chips/dessert/beverage for
the bus ride home. We will ask each family for some
food donations for the meal on the bus coming home.
Everybody attending the trip will need to fill out a
diocesan permission slip (students & adults). We will
hand these permission slips out once we have the
completed registration form & payment. Registration
forms can be picked up in the back of churches by the
Scrip Table . If you have questions call Ken or Mary
Stoeffler at 563-329-0149.
THANK YOU...As I was opening many cards and
notes following my last weekend at Holy Family
Parish, it was very humbling time. Some of the
notes brought smiles, more than one a tear, and all
a great sense of gratitude for these past ten years.
Thank you for the many gifts, the words and pray-
ers and for the Masses.
