Room: CB 407

Engr. Joan B. Gorme, MSCE, ME1

WHAT IS ENVIRONMENT?

 The environment encompasses the whole of

life on earth and the complex interactions
that link the living world with the physical
world
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
 It is the application of science
and engineering principles to
improve the environment for
human habitation and for
other organisms, and to
remediate polluted sites.

 These include:
a. the provision of safe, palatable and ample public water supplies;
b. the proper disposal of or a recycle of wastewater and solid wastes;
c. the adequate drainage of urban and rural areas for proper
sanitation;
d. the control of water, soil, and atmospheric pollution,
e. and the social and environmental impact of these solutions.
SCIENCE & ENGINEERING

 Science…improve our
understanding of natural
processes

 Engineering…use this
understanding to develop
and apply technologies that
will maintain or improve
environmental quality
GREEN TECHNOLOGY

 Green technology acts to reduce contaminants and

harmful processes through directly counteracting
them, or through altering the conditions that create
them.
 It is the technology which is environmentally friendly,
developed and used in such a way so that it doesn’t
disturb our environment and conserves natural
resources.
TYPES OF GREEN TECHNOLOGY

1. Green Chemistry

2. Green Nanotechnology

3. Green Building

4. Green Information Technology

5. Green Energy
 It has two goals: producing
nanomaterials and products without
harming the environment or human
health, and producing Nano-
products that provide solutions to
environmental problems.

 It uses existing principles of green

chemistry and green engineering to
make nanomaterials and Nano-
products without toxic ingredients,
at low temperatures using less
energy and renewable inputs
wherever possible, and using
lifecycle thinking in all design and
engineering stages.
 Renewable energy is generally defined as
energy that comes from resources which are
naturally replenished on a human timescale
such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and
geothermal heat.

 It replaces conventional fuels in four distinct

areas: electricity generation, air and water
heating/cooling, motor fuels, and rural (off-
grid) energy services.
