discuss the key terms and their definitions.

continent one of seven large landmasses into which Earth is divided

landform a naturally formed feature on Earth’s surface

During Focused Reading, Asking Questions, Summarizing

Reading Use the SQ3R approach (Strategy 11) to help students take notes. Have the
students survey the text and predict what they might learn. Then write down
the following questions under the main headings in the text.
Questions:
1. What do geographers study?
2. What are the five themes of geography?

3. How does climate affect people’s lives?

After students read each section, take time to answer the questions. Here is a
sample answer for Question 1.
Answers:
1. Geographers study the land and water that cover Earth. They also study
where people live on Earth and how they interact with it.

After Summarizing
Reading Have students do Collaborative Rereading (Strategy 28) to reinforce what
they have learned. Model this activity using Transparency 28.2. Direct
Readers to write the questions and Listeners to write the main ideas. Sample
entries from “Landforms and Bodies of Water” on page 10 might include:
Questions:
• Which two continents are islands?
• What are some other examples of landforms besides islands?
Main Ideas:
• The continents of Australia and Antarctica are islands.
• Mountains, plateaus, and plains are three types of landforms.
