DOC: 816-1702-11: Sun GigaSwift Ethernet Adapter Installation and User

Guide.

Issue Description:

Sun GigaSwift Ethernet 1.0 UTP adapters configured for 1000 Mbps forced
mode operation may not work correctly and the interface may become
inactive.

This issue affects any GigaSwift Ethernet 1.0 UTP adapter which has
been configured to run in 1000 Mbps forced mode. To determine if this
ethernet adapter is installed in a system, grep(1) for the following
line in the /etc/path_to_inst file: "/pci@1f,4000/network@4" 0 "ce".
pkginfo(1) will also show the presence of the SUNWced.u and SUNWcedx.u
packages.

Forced mode operation is set either from the command line or with an
entry in the file /platform/sun4u/kernel/drv/ce.conf.

Command Line:

# ndd -set /dev/ce instance

# ndd -get /dev/ce adv_autoneg_cap

0

# ndd -get /dev/ce adv_1000fdx_cap

1

# ndd -get /dev/ce adv_1000hdx_cap

0

If adv_autoneg_cap is 0 and if either 1000fdx_cap or 1000hdx_cap is 1,

then the interface is forced for 1000 Mbps.

/platform/sun4u/kernel/drv/ce.conf file:

Check the ce.conf entry for adv-autoneg-cap=0 and either

adv-1000fdx-cap=1 or adv-1000hdx-cap=1.

If an issue occurs as a result of 1000 Mpbs forced mode being set,

the ce device driver may report that the "link is down" or that the
"interface is inactive". There will be no connection to the network.

The IEEE 802.3ab specification doesn't allow for forced mode 1000 Mbps.
As a result, many switch vendors do not support forced mode. Although
the tranceiver used in the Sun Gigaswift Ethernet 1.0 UTP is
configurable for 1000 Mbps forced mode, and the ce driver allows this,
it does not work under certain circumstances.

The resolution is to not configure Sun Gigaswift Ethernet 1.0 UTP in

1000 Mbps forced mode.

Implementation:

---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Proactive)
---

---
| | CONTROLLED PROACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
---

---
| X | REACTIVE (As Required)
---

Corrective Action:

The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized

Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.

Do not use Sun Gigaswift Ethernet 1.0 UTP in 1000 Mbps forced mode.
Use the default autonegotiation mode instead. The Gigaswift Ethernet
Adapter Installation and User's Guide describes how to configure the
interface in forced and autonegotiation modes.

Implementation Footnote:

i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Sun Services will attempt to contact

all affected customers to recommend implementation of the FIN.

ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Sun Services mission critical

support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.

iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Sun Services will implement the FIN as the
need arises.
