Title: Impact of Social Media on academic
1. Introduction
 Word “Social Media” means collection of applications (Facebook,
Twitter, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, or YouTube etc.) and websites that
link people to share information and aware people about any event
through social networking.
 Social media is captured within the use of internet through
Facebook, What sap, Twitter, Skype, Myspace as well as Yahoo
Messenger for communication sharing of ideas, sharing of photos
and videos by users.
 Social media has exploded as a category of online discourse where
people create content, share it, bookmark it and network at a
prodigious rate.
 Social media is fast changing the public discourse in society and
setting trends and agenda in topics that range from the
environment and politics to technology and the entertainment
industry.
 Socialmedia websites have become common; giving young people
a new way to Socialinteract with each other and communicate
with the world. Social networking became popular between 2, 004
and 2006, after Facebook and Myspace were created.
 It is used to build relationship among people [18]. With their help,
we can communicate with each other, even on different continents,
listen to music, read books, look at photos and much more. Social
media have greatly simplified our lives and tightly tied to
ourselves.
 Provide several ways of interaction and different opportunities to
learn foreign languages through worldwide.

2. Statement of problem
 The rapid advancement of media technology has had a great
impact on the way people communicate on a daily basis.
 The growing dimension of the use of the social media among
the youth of today cannot be over emphasized.
 Over the years, social networking among students has become
more and more popular.
 It is a way to make connections, not only on campus but with
friends outside of school. Social networking is a way that helps
people feels they belong to a community.

students positively or adversely.

3. Objectives of the Study


The main objective behind the selection of this topic is To
analyze the effects of social media on youth.
How they use it in daily life and its impact on society through
different angles like educational learning, entertainment, job
opportunities, health, communication, interaction, enhancing
skills, and online shopping.
General objective
The study was to find out the impact of social media on
academic performance among students.
Specific objectives
 To examine the impact of social media on academic performance
among the students.
 To identify the benefits obtained from using the social media.
 To ascertain what students use social media sites for using social
media
4. Research Questions
i. Does the use of social media sites have any impact on student’s
academic performance?
ii. What are the benefits they derive from using social media?
iii. Why do student visit their social media sites?
5. Hypothesis
i. There is a relationship between time spent on social media and
academic performance
ii. There is relationship between the use of social media and excellent
academic performance
6. Methodology
The survey method was used to solicit data and information from a
sample of students of Koforidua Polytechnic during lecture hours of
the second semester of 2013/14 academic year.
A set of questionnaire was designed by the researchers to collect
information and data.
This part presents the methodology used. Discussed here are research
design, the sources of data that includes the locale of the study and
research population, instrumentation and data collection, and tools
used for data analysis.
An arrangement of survey was composed by the group of researchers
to gather data and information
7. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

 Social networks are becoming more popular among university


students and are a new way of spending free time.
 Serve as a separate channel for finding the necessary
information both educational and entertaining.
 In particular, how the use of social networks affects the
academic success of students.
 This study will discover this information, giving the researchers
an opportunity to explore and gain new knowledge.
 It can be used for future studies.

8. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION


 The study was conducted to assess the impact of social media
on students’ academic performance.
 It was conducted during the summer semester of academic year
2017-2018.

 The study limited only on variables of social media that the
researchersassumedthat has effects of respondents’ academic
performance.
 These variables are respondents ‘access to internet, usage,
perception on social media,
And their frequency of using it.
