MESSNER Aeration Panel: Solenoid Valve for Maintenance Cycle

Background maintenance cycle:

The unavoidable growth of mineralised and biological deposits (EPS) on the
membrane causes a higher opening pressure of the membrane, resulting in an
efficiency loss of the aeration system. To avoid this negative effect on the aera-
tion system the membrane has to be relaxed several times a day. By switching
off the air supply the membrane, under normal operation conditions stretched
and curved, is relaxing and is laying down plain and flat on the stainless steel
plate. During the relaxing process the above described deposits are unsoldered
from the membrane and therefore a further growth of deposits will be mostly
prevented. This process is called “maintenance cycle”. Important for good
cleaning results of the membrane are the amount of daily cycles, a correct bio-
logical process control and the assured control of the system pressure inside
the piping by using manometers or pressure sensors.
Usage and Function:
After shutdown of the air supply (either by locking the gate valve in the piping or by switching of the blowers) a
pressure equalisation of the air system has to be done, allowing the membrane to relax and therefore maintain
the membrane quality. For this purpose a solenoid valve with assisted lift and reference pipe to the bottom of
the aeration basin is an important part of the MESSNER aeration technology. The solenoid valve will be opened
after shutting down the air supply, allowing the compressed air to escape via the reference pipe until the system
pressure and the hydrostatic pressure are equal (see picture below).
Mode of Operation:
The number of maintenance cycles as well as the “open time” of the solenoid valve are depending on the oper-
ation method of the WWTP and will be defined whilst the initial operation of the aeration system.
a) Continuous operation of the WWTP (e.g. nitrification with upstream or simultaneous denitrification)
In case of continuous operation of the WWTP the duration until the pressure equalization of the aeration system
has to be manually measured. Afterwards an additional buffer time will be added to the measured equalisation
time resulting in the “opening time”. The calculated “opening time” is the necessary parameter for the program-
mable logic control (PLC) of the operational control system of the WWTP.
WWTP without PLC can realize this automated process by using a common timer clock. After the maintenance
cycle is finished the normal aeration mode can be continued. The maintenance cycle should be done several
times a day, but at least twice a day as a minimum.
b) Intermittent operation of the WWTP (e.g. intermittent denitrification or Sequence-Batch Reactor)
In case of intermittent operation of the WWTP the solenoid valve must be closed whilst aeration mode (nitrifica-
tion) and has to be opened whilst non-aeration mode (denitrification).
