Lesson SWBAT: -plant a seed


Objective -express their creativity using recycled items
-identify three or more recyclable items (This is more a
group SWBAT than an individual student SWBAT as you
don’t have any way of knowing that each individual
student can do this.)

3-5 min. Play youtube video, “Rocko’s Modern Life R-E-C-Y-C-L-

leave time for comments and discussion on the video
Body
-display recyclable items
30 min. -have students sort the items, so that they become
familiar with the symbols for recycling
-allow students to select either a two liter pop bottle, a
yoghurt container, a margarine container, or a milk
carton.
-allow students to decorate the containers using other
scrap materials
-using soil and vermicompost from the class put 3
inches into the bottom of the selected containers
(make sure to keep the worms in the vermicompost
and not in the new planters).
-distribute seeds to students to put in the planters.
-have students wash their hands and clean up

Closure/ Conclusion
10-15 min.
-get students, in small groups to brainstorm other
ways in which recyclable items could be reused.
-have groups vote on their favorite idea, and then
share that idea with the class.
-show students multiple items which were made out of
recycled materials. (for example, recycled paper,
mobiles etc.)
-explain to the students that next day they will be
working in the same groups, and will have an
opportunity to create something new out of recycled
materials.

Assessment -observe students participation in sorting materials


-thoughtful decoration of recycled container – this is
difficult to assess unless you establish criteria
-seed planted
-contribution to group brainstorm
Resources -assortment of recyclable items, including enough
and containers for every student in the class, and
equipment or recyclable items which can be used for decorating
supplies for (bottle caps, scraps of colored paper, tin foil, film,
lesson corks, etc.)
