Introduction:
Emotions have almost become a big barrier in
life when we are unable to control them.Though we
are strong , powerful and caring, when it comes to
poor mental health we don’t withstand the wave.
Nowadays, we sure are very delinquent on aspects
like having a good eight hour sleep cycle, we let
our mood control us.Being moody has become a
routine rather than a part of life.Adversity strikes in
moments we least expect and the scale in which it
strikes varies.Being emotionally stable helps us to
focus, keeps us confident, happy and helps us stay
hopeful and optimistic.Frequent emotional
upsurges like mental breakdowns and extreme
happiness are not stable states if they last long
than expected.Going through it, getting over it is
difficult once we let these happen to us.Though we
spread a lot of awareness about counselling and
counsellors, it’s not sure that they are being visited
and are helping the right people. Therefore, with
the help of this questionnaire, various opinions on
how people control emotional triggers in their day
to day life is acquired.

Problem statement:
Emotion control has become major reason for
the disruption of mental health.Once the mental
health is disturbed-our perspective-the way we see
life changes and everything shifts. Moreover,
people desperately check their physical health
conditions but forget about their mental health
conditions. Inspite of being healthy, one must be
emotionally stable and must possess hope in
tough situations. It is true that most of us do not
realise this and don’t care about it. Therefore, if
people are questioned about their metal stability,
atleast then they might realise they need help and
this aspect must also be given importance too.

Significance of the study:

Everyone must be aware of their mental
health conditions.Emotion control being a major
factor for it must be tested and analysed for people
to decide upon and change their lifestyle. This
study is conducted to discover various ways in
which different people control emotions and they
handle their emotional upsurges. Because, once
we get to know we spread awareness but when a
person realises by analysing he/she is bound to
change by the circumstances.

Research questions:
The following questions are answered in this
paper:
1.How do you not let emotions get the best of you?
2.In what ways do you think you can help a friend
when in an emotional upsurge?
Purpose of the study:
The aim of this study is to discover various
ways to tackle emotional upsurge and analyse
emotion control by different people in their day to
day life. The survey is taken on a broad circle of
people of age ranging from 16-70 yrs as
“Experience speaks while innovation
conquers”.Analysing this aspect will help
people change their lifestyle into something more
productive, optimistic and happy.
Literature Review:
The are many researches happening to
improve self control over the emotions.Emotion is a
mental state which involves a lot of behaviours,
actions, thoughts and feelings.The book,”The
Expression of the Emotions in humans and
animals” was written by Charles Darwin in
1961.”The ability to perceive emotion, integrate
emotion to facilitate thought, understand emotions,
and to regulate emotions to promote personal
growth”(Mayer & Salovey, 1997). Morris MW,
Keltner D. 2000( How emotions work: The social
functions of emotional expression in negotiations)
tells that,”The point is not that the consequences of
emotional expression are always adaptive but
merely that emotions do ‘work’ in negotiations”.
Jean Hailes, Mental and emotional health talks
about depression, anxiety, sadness, stress, and
other emotions that affect our mental health. And
also mentions about ‘talk’ therapy which help in
Research Methodology:
Qualitative and Quantitative questionnaire is
used.Statistical responses were recorded from the
questionnaire. This questionnaire with 08 closed
questions and 02 open questions circulated only to
50 students of VIT, Vellore.
A.Participants
Students and friends of 50 participated and
helped in the study of the topic “Measures to
Control Emotional Triggers”.All the participants
mostly of age group of 18-21years old. This age
group is rightly chosen as they are the ones who
lack emotional control.

B.Instruments(Questionnaire)
The instrument used here is
Questionnaire.Basically, 10 questions were asked
out of which 08 were open type and 02 were
closed type. The questions were simple and direct
which generally are faced by college students.

C.Procedure(Google Form)
Questionnaire were created in the google
form. The link of the form were circulated through
mail and WhatsApp. As students click the link ,it is
directed to the google form. The best part is that,
the responses are displayed in the statistical charts
which are easy to analyse the data.
Data Analysis and Interpretation:
The data of the responses are displayed in
pie charts and other scales for easy analysis.

The above data are the responses received

by 50 students of age group 18-21. The data
clearly shows that students who are under
emotional depression feel to share things
with their friends than counsellor.Factors like
social, environmental changes, and
spirituality helps people to recover from their
depression.
Findings:
Analysing the results that were obtained from
the questionnaire we find that people control their
emotions by

• Keeping silent
• By avoiding themselves from overthinking
• By distracting themselves on this case
suppressing their emotions
• By thinking optimistically
• Finally, hoping that they will get through it and
all this will pass away

And the most common way in which they would

help a friend while in an emotional upsurge is by
consoling them. They would either get them to talk
about it or take them out to distract them.Handling
emotions will be easier only when they are not
suppressed.

Conclusions:
The survey on the measures to control
emotional triggers And avoid this we have to take
some measures to control emotion. There are
various ways in which we can control our emotions
without suppressing it that the respondents have
tried. They have also given us suggestions and
opinions with their answers. Mental health plays an
important role in our life and we have to preserve it
with care.
