How to Take System State Backup of Window server 2012

server using CMD and Graphically

System State Backup on Domain controller consists of –
1. Active Directory Database (NTDS.dit)
2. The SYSVOL shared folder
3. The Registry
4. System startup files
5. The COM+ class registration database
6. Active Directory Certificate Services (ADCS) database
7. Cluster Service information
8. Microsoft internet information services (IIS) metadirectory
9. System files under window resources protection
Pre-requisite are –
1. Install Feature “Windows Server Backup”

System State Backup using CMD prompt (Run as Administrator).

1. Open CMD prompt
2. Type “wbadmin start systemstatebackup –backuptarget: Volume Name :
Example – wbadmin start systemstatebackup –backuptarget:b: and press enter
3. Type “Y” for Yes and press enter to start the backup process.
4. When the backup is finished running you should get a message that the backup
completed successfully.
Now you have system State Backup of 2012 server.

System State Backup Using Graphical Console “Window Server Backup”

1. Open “Window Server Backup”

2. On the window server backup console on the left side “click on “Local Backup”
on the right side “Action pane > click on Backup Once”
3. Now Backup Once Wizard open select “Different Options” and click on Next.
4. Now we have two option “Full server Backup” and “Custom backup” select
“Custom” because we need system state backup and click on next.

5. Here on this console click on “Add Item”

6. On Add item just select “System State” and click OK.
7. Click on “Advanced setting” and then click on “VSS settings”.

8. Go to VSS setting and select “VSS full backup” (if you are not using any backup
product for application level backup then it is used) and click on OK and Next.
9. Now here you can select destination where you want to store backup and click
Next.
10. Now here you can select partition where you want to store backup and click on
next.
11. Now click on Backup to start the backup process.
Here below system state backup completed.
How to Restore “System State Backup”
1. Open “Window server backup” console in that console there is two system state
backup showing.

2. On the Right side “Action pane > click on Recover option” a new “Recovery Wizard
open.

3. Click on “This server” and click on Next.

4. Select most “Newest available system state” and click on next.
5. Select “System State” and click on next.
6. On the next wizard select “Original location” and select authoritative restore of active
directory files (if by mistake any active directory user delete it will be restore using
authoritative restore of active directory) and click on next.
7. During this operation if below error occur just read.
8. Open CMD using administrator account and type cmd “bcdedit /set safeboot dsrepair”
and click enter and then restart the server.

9. After restart above 1 to 6 recovery step perform

10. On the next wizard select “Original location” and select authoritative restore of active
directory files (if by mistake any active directory user delete it will be restore using
authoritative restore of active directory) and click on next.
